I cycle and drive, and love both. I also pride myself on cycling and driving safely, even if it is spirited when safe to do so. I used to cycle into work everyday when I lived closer to London. I find one thing is certain... There are bad road users and good road users. Regardless of whether they have an engine or not. The real argument here is freedom. And by making cyclist tax and insure you isolate many would be cyclists. We should be encouraging cycling and educating more to ensure all road users know how to deal with one another on the roads.

Taxing cyclists isn’t a good idea. Kids driving bikes or people driving to protect the environment shouldn’t be taxed. They don’t cause nearly as much damage as cars and trucks

The truth here is difficult, in essence it seems obvious that all should contribute to the upkeep of the roads. However it will be impossible as for an example electric cars are road tax exempt due to 0 emissions. So a licence of some sort and insurance (even that is tough as surely it can't be expected that minors have to be insured) also its actually a real quirk that it is actually illegal for anyone to cycle on a footpath, but accepted and encouraged for young children not to cycle on the road, in fact wven if an adult is caught on the pavement, the police have no powers of confiscation.@weshouldsaveourselves6780

As a motorist and not a cyclist I disagree with Jeremy, cycling is the last freedom of movement without being controlled and forced by Government power and the British insurance swindle. If you're going on the road you should be insured like everyone else. Just last week 2 chavs on a single bike swerving and swearing at people got their back wheel bent in half. @maynardssoblue3839 it's the lycra wearing cyclist pricks that cause most accidents. The roads are for cars. Then you see cyclists riding side by side taking up all the space so the cars can't drive past and then we end up with tail backs. The ones that really piss me off is where they have cycling paths yet the cyclists still use main roads....

Now more of a pedestrian, I have to say that I am shocked at the number of people cycling on the pavements - even when the roads are quiet - they approach at speed, and expect pedestrians to simply jump out of the way, as they fly past! This also applies to speeding mobility scooters and electric scooters too, which seem to be a law unto themselves. Not all of them of course, but far too many from my own person experience, using pavements without regard to the safety of pedestrians. We should all drive/ride respectfully of each other.

Don't agree. Can't legislate everything. The reasons for asking all cyclists in the country to be insured are valid, but they'll always be outweighed by the simple right for someone to be able to get about on their own accord without having to pay someone to do it. Motorised vehicles make sense to. Cyclists no. There should absolutely be more frequent and heavier fines for cyclists breaking road rules and I'm more than happy with their being cover for cyclists if they want it. But to legislate for insurance as a must is not right. The fact most roads are built so that you have to share the same lanes is not the cyclist's fault. And to be clear, I don't even cycle! Just common sense. I hope...

I agree that cyclists shouldn't be required to have insurance. I've cycled on the roads since I was 11 (I'm now 68) and have covered something like 150,000 miles and have never been involved in an accident, where an insurance claim would be made against me. I have been in two minor collisions, but on both occasions the driver was at fault and the repairs to my bike were paid from their insurance policies. Cyclists are extremely unlikely to cause significant material damage. Even Ergan Bernal cycling at 40mph into the back of a stationary coach kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXOaiIB4bZZpepY barely made a dent whilst he suffered numerous broken ribs and a punctured lung. Very occasionally a cyclist will hit a pedestrian and injure them, although frequently the cyclist is also injured. In these circumstances, most home insurance policies have a liability clause which can pay compensation to the pedestrian if the cyclist was at fault. Pedestrians and cyclists use the roads by right, whereas drivers are only permitted to use the roads under licence. Pedestrians can also damage cars by being hit by them, but are we suggesting they also should have insurance?

The position of a cyclist on a road or touring bike means tey have to lean their head back in order to see the road ahead. It's therefore not unusual for cyclists to ride into the back of stationary vehicles, although usually this is where the vehicle is in an unusual position, which wasn't the case with your car. Even professional cyclists do it. e.g. Ergan Bernal rode into the back of a stationary coach at 40mph, resulting in several broken ribs, spine and a punctured lung.

It was certainly a beautiful moment on reflection. Although, irritating at the time. The utter joke about it, the cyclist had no insurance and the police called it a civil matter. Had that been a motor vehicle, obviously the result would have been dealt with using insurance. I sat with the cyclist until the ambulance arrived and checked in with the hospital via telephone on his condition. Soon to find that he discharged himself well. Absolutely no effort to give me his details even on request and a family member I called for him, wouldn't assist in forwarding his details. What I do have, is a fantastic video of him crashing right into the rear of my car. Hopefully he's grown up and no longer being a nuisance on the road.

I don’t get it. Motorists have massive responsibilities and THAT is why they pay for insurance, have to take driving tests, and pay costs that aren’t on the cheapest side initially, unless mommy and daddie are giving you lots of help. Cycling is accessible to all. It’s free, easy, and involved personal effort. It’s also a genuine life support for those who are poor and simply cannot afford to drive or use public transport. Cyclists don’t kill in any great number, nor injure people. People need to understand that there is a massive different between going around on a bike and driving around in a fast moving muscle of metal that can be lethal on impact. It’s really not difficult to understand. There are too many people that are cavalier and many of them happen to be behind the wheel. It’s frightening. Driving is dangerous and it’s only because we have a functioning Highway Code that the roads are remotely safe enough to minimise deaths per day.

They get too close to you ? Who is overtaking who? 99% of the time it is a car overtaking a cyclist and not the other way round. Funny how I drive and cycle and I generally have no issue at all with cyclists. Why? Because I leave them plenty of space and overtake when it is safe to do so. I always laugh at irate car drivers when a cyclist (not me I should point out) hit their mirrors as they close pass. Funny enough they can't do that to me because I leave the space they are entitled to. Simples.

@@louisemiller3784 Not all cyclists are bad cyclists you know, there's more wise/time served cyclists than the idiots you see in the media & city centres. I got assaulted by a car driver about 6 years ago, The reason for the assault was....I don't pay road tax....This bloke was driving a Nissan Leaf 100% electric car which is VED free. I take it you aren't old enough to remember the Cycle Proficiency Test' ? This was introduced by Labour in the 60's to ensure all cyclists learn't how to ride safely, I took my test in 1979 and passed it, still got my paperwork & badge somewhere, when the Conservatives got in power with Maggie Thatcher their quest of cutting back on everything and scrapping things that cost money to save money for themselves, they also scrapped the CPT, Labour for years trying to bring it back in but no the Government says it's a waste of money. Many schools offered free bike riding lessons to children but have ceased from many schools now. As for helmets, Why do you think cyclists should wear them ? Because what you think they should or maybe you see a cyclist not wearing one who then in some peoples mind sees them as a dangerous cyclist! I can't fathom that one out. Helmets only offer protection up to 12mph and faster and it's your neck that gets it not your head, if riding off road then do wear one as stones & trees take no prisoners. My Son was out on his bike be about 10 years now, it was a red hot day and he was sweating terrible, sweat pouring down his face, I told him to stop and remove his helmet, then he strangely looked up in the air and steered into the kerbside and went down with a heavy bang, he'd passed out due to the heat build up in his head, caused by the helmet, he had to go into hospital that day, the doctor said the heat did actually cause him to pass out and it's not the first case. The AA a few years ago was stopping cyclists and giving them free helmets, at the same time British Cycling in retaliation was stopping car drivers and giving them for free The Highway Code book telling drivers to refresh their minds.....lol Enjoy the rest of the night 🌻

@@louisemiller3784I've come across many cyclists who ride on a black bike in black clothing with nothing to help them being seen, they are a danger to themselves, personally I used to have two high intensity red rear lights, so bright you could be seen from a mile away on a straight road. ''There needs to be more regulation to make them take responsibility on the road''............I suppose you could say the same about car drivers these days, back in my early days of driving a car there was such a thing as ''Ambler Gambler'' there used to be Government adverts advising not to be an Ambler Gambler, but these days drivers think nothing of going through red lights, at least three of them not stopping, I just don't understand why they do it, their world will not come to an end if they stop, but the world will come to a stop of the poor pedestrian who sees the green light to cross only to get mown down by dangerous irresponsible drivers going through red lights. I stopped riding my bike about 6 years ago, I've always been a law abiding cyclist but strangely about one in four car drivers think it's acceptable to endanger my life, either punishment passes or throwing crap at me or blatant heavy sounding of the horn as they pass, it was never like this in the 80's to 00's but it's the norm nowadays as motorists see them as objects & tax evading scum. Do you know there's a new trend developing with certain car drivers and that is to come to the side of the cyclist and push them off their bike and drive off, the UK is a dangerous place for cyclists now.

HE IS A VILE CREATURE In 2005, Kyle moved his format to ITV with a programme also entitled The Jeremy Kyle Show. Members of his production team later accused Kyle of looking down on his guests. He was recorded referring to participants on his show that day as “thick as shiit”. In September 2007, Manchester judge Alan Berg[ described the show as "trash" which existed to "titillate bored members of the public with nothing better to do" In May 2019, the recording and broadcasting of The Jeremy Kyle Show was suspended after a guest committed suicide shortly after appearing in an episode of the series. A review of the episode occurred before any resumption of the programme's transmission, and on 15 May 2019, ITV confirmed that the series had ceased production with immediate effect. It has since been revealed that more guests had taken their own lives following their appearances in this and another programme hosted by Kyle on Channel 5, Britain's Worst Husband.

I don't mind cyclists, but when there's a perfectly maintained cycle lane, then hard shoulder which cyclist can legally use, but he choose to use a lane, on top of that nobody can pass him even on a second lane, because that's too close now. Yes, cyclist is following the law, but what kind of person you have to be, to take 4 lanes, a road that you can fit 4 40 tonne lorries in, you take up all that instead. There is a main dual carriageway that runs through my town. Some parts are 30mph, 50mph and 70mph. Cyclists regularly use it even though there is a cycle lane running the length of it. Few years ago a cyclist was flattered by a 44 ton lorry. Driver 50mph on the inside lane came round a bend saw the cyclist and couldn't react in time. Cyclists family are burying their loved one and the driver probably has PTSD. Round the city centre sure use your bike but on roads where vehicles are travelling 50 60 & even 70? No chance. That shouldn't be allowed.

I do agree with some of what is being said (for instance, as a cyclist i see some appaling cycling done, espec skilping red lights which should be punished), but cannot help but see this as another attack on cyclists (you're blind if you can't see Jeremy Kyle's bias in this), at a time when we should be promoting cycling more than ever. 38% of car journeys are under 2 miles in the UK- this should be a shocking statistic for everyone. And yet, well done GB news - along with your daily mail and telegraph crap- for producing some more bile that will inevitably put off people from taking up cycling. What angers me most is when they try and act as if cycling is as dangerous as driving a car, like that lovely guest is trying to do. You shouldn't need stats to disprove that (although of course the 2 people a year killed by cyclist compared with the 17,000 killed by cars is a good one)- common sense tells you that if something weighing 1.5 tonnes smashes into you, it might just hurt a bit more than something that weights 15kg.

There are a number of cyclists who act in wreck less manners and are not in control of their vehicle causing damage to cars, taking both hands off the handlebars, using phone, no lights when it’s dark so for that purpose they should be identifiable. I have no qualms that some motorists probably do drive too close etc but they have no accountability and bicycles now are vastly different to the ones when original laws were put out. They can get up to ridiculous speeds and many lack any care for anyone else using the roads, particularly in city centres where you risk been mowed down at times in what are deemed pedestrian areas.

@K yes it would. I have a friend who works in insurance and they do pay out.or would you rather drivers keep footing the bill. If I hit a cyclist he claims on my insurance so why is it so wrong to expect it the other way round. The majority of cyclists I see on the road give no regard to the rules of the road. If cyclist's were forced to have insurance and some form of licence plate I think most of them wouldn't be so flippent with the rules of the road and may even garner some respect from drivers. What happens if a cyclist hits a pedestrian were does there compensation come from.
@Hayleybayliebop
@Hayleybayliebop 2 жыл бұрын
@K if you have to claim on your insurance, then your insurance premium goes up....meaning that if a car gets hit by an uninsured cyclist through no fault of their own, they have to pay their excess and then pay an increased premium from next year and onwards....and why should they have to have the financial burden when they are the innocent party? The point of fully comprehensive insurance is so that if you have an accident that is YOUR fault, the insurance company will not only pay out for the damage you have caused the other party and their vehicle, but the motorist can also have their car fixed too as they pay a higher premium to cover it. That is why it is a legal requirement to have at least third party, fire and theft; because it is the responsibility of the person who caused the accident to at least pay for repairs (and compensation when required) to the innocent party's vehicle.
@Hayleybayliebop
@Hayleybayliebop 2 жыл бұрын
I do think a fair way to do it would be to be able to add cycling to your existing car insuance. So much like when you insure multiple drivers on one car and the price either increases or decreases dependent on experience, depending on how much you drive vs cycle, your existing premium would be adjusted to reflect the risks and costs involved in each activity. Realistically, this could end up working in your favour financially, as it should be much less to ensure a bike.

@@IanLanc I honestly do not think people will go out of their way to knock them down; I think people have more sense than that. It is just a matter of getting along and using the road fairly. There is always going to be idiot cyclist and there is always going to be idiot motorists, but it is the idiots that shout loudest that tend to create the issues for the others in their group and, I am sorry, but the cyclist in this video is the issue in this case. He is a troublemaker that gives cyclists a bad name. Just today, I came across both of the above. Whilst passing a visual aid centre in my local area 2 boy racers overtook a queue of traffic and ran a red light at speed as a visually impaired man was starting to cross....idiotic. Later as I was driving to work up a clear dual carriageway, a cyclist was riding on the left, as I began to approach, from behind and move to the outside lane to overtake, he purposely moved right to the middle of both lanes to block me and the one other car behind me overtaking.....pointless, frustrating and most of all, dangerous for him, as if I was an 'idiot', I may have still tried to overtake, but the gap would have been much tighter. I would happily call out the vast amounts of idiot motorists and so would most other sensible motorists, so in my opinion, the most effective way for cyclists to gain respect is to not defend and excuse the actions of the idiot cyclists such as the guy in the video.

Of course it isnt you need to follow the same rules as the road as everyone else (that has always been the case you got taught that on your cycling proficiency in the 80s?) And insurance should definitely be the case for cyclists and to be identified if a push bike goes up the side of you causing thousands of pounds of damage it needs to be paid for the same as any accident and that needs to be insurance unless every cyclist is minted? ......and at the moment you can do that in London pick your bike up ride off and nobody knows who you are and how to trace you and your left thousands out of pocket? Grow up mate! Of course that's not okay?

Even the tractor drivers will pull over when they happen accross a layby, but the Cyclists don't. These people are out for leisure generally so they should give a bit more respect to the other road users who pay for those roads as many are on their way to work / hospital appointments etc... when out on my bike I always pull over into any gateway / layby I can to let them past, after all, how can I enjoy a ride with a car / van right up behind me ?
