When I came to the US. This was the 1st movie I ever watched in movie theaters... 7 years old... Low and behold decades later I would become a US Marine and work with the exact same aircraft. This movie means the world to me... of course it isn't perfect, but I think it was extremely instrumental as to who I am now.

“Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!” Still gives me chills.

@@danielclark241 I think it's a big dumb blockbuster disaster flick. But it's insanely fun to watch, because it knows it's dumb and doesn't try to be more than what it is. @@Siegbert85 It didn't take itself TOO seriously. It knew it was ridiculous, acknowledged it straight away, and told its audience to sit back and have a good time. I was diagnosed with testicular cancer that metastasized to my stomach and liver back in February of this year, and I just recently wrapped up my chemotherapy. I rewatched your videos and reviews throughout each of my chemo sessions and through several sleepless nights; they kept me entertained and laughing all the while, and that obviously means a great deal to me. This was the movie that made me love movies. I saw it when I was 6 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I actually wore out my VHS copy of it and I still have the 3D picture that came glued to that VHS. For those who don't know, back in the 90s there used to be pictures that would move if you moved them up and down or side to side. The 3D pic for Independence Day was of the spaceship blowing up the White House. It was cool, and it was more 90s than The Offspring drinking a bottle of Snapple. Even though I'm older now and can see all the flaws, I still love it. I just graduated film school a few weeks ago, and film wouldn't have even been a passion of mine had I not seen ID4 as a 6 year-old boy. I hold it near and dear to my heart.

I realized years ago that when this movie introduced the computer virus as the downfall of the aliens, ID4 was the modern retelling of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds where the aliens also were done in by a common earth like virus pathogen that the aliens had no defense for. Is it original? Hell no. Is it well told and well shot retelling? Hell yes and that's what makes it fun.

This film has all the same problems as Godzilla. People just don't see it because of charismatic actors and well-executed action, and because the film kisses America's ass so much that you think it's about to give the US military a blowjob, something, somehow a lot of Americans apparently love. In Godzilla it's the French intelligence guy who helps to save the day while the American military is pretty useless.

Fun Fact: Parts of this movie were filmed outside the small town I grew up in. People I knew were cast as extras in the movie. My seventh grade history teacher was one of the guys in the diner making fun of Randy Quaid’s character at the start of the movie, and my best friend’s dad was in the crowd during Bill Pullman’s speech. So there’s my second-hand claim to fame. Everybody in our town showed up to see this movie opening weekend. It was HUGE. At least, as huge as life gets in Podunk, USA.

Happy 4th of July, Jeremy, great review. I loved this movie back in the day, still do. Still quotable as hell and so much fun. One of the best things about this film were how likable the characters were, especially Will & Goldblum, the sequel pales in comparison. I feel like they waited way too long to do it. And killing him offscreen in that movie was a bad idea IMHO. Always thought the plot should've been a rescue mission where they try to locate a missing group including Capt. Steven Hiller and end on a cliffhanger without showing Will, then do a third when Will was able to do it, if he wanted to reprise his role. But back to the original, I remember the awesome making-of vignette they had on HBO when it showed Jeff Goldblum as David running around Area 51 with the cameraman, always thought that making of segment was so cool. I think that's what Jeremy was referencing at 6:47. HBO was so awesome back then especially when they did the teasers for big blockbuster movies that premiered on there. :) Hope to see you review more awesome 90s movies, Jeremy. Blade, Twister, Goldeneye, TFTC: Demon Knight or The Mask of Zorro would be awesome or since you did The Rock already: Bad Boys or Armageddon.

@Frost Stripe I actually have a huge soft spot for Revenge Of The Fallen, at least it’s entertaining and isn’t trying to be anything more than a dumb fun action movie, a movie like the Last Jedi doesn’t even have those things going for it, it’s ungodly boring, actually tries (and fails miserably) to be a good movie, and contains writing choices that actively piss me off
