Eh kinda, but I think that was all kind of dashed when her mom tells her story and basically exposition dumps all over us. I really wish they hadn't done that. I think even if they just showed all the same stuff without her narration it would have worked out better and it would have given more reasons for rewatching it so you could piece everything together.

@@tommym7321Agreed. Also Im in disagreement that this movie is some kind of deep introspective psychological horror that is worth watch multiple times like many have suggested. See what “expectations” can do? Just let the film show you what it is This is a classic; right up there w/Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, The Shining. Not that it’s even the strongest amongst those; but those 3 films are absolutely what this film gives
@jordanbouma98433 ай бұрын
Although I was very intrigued at the start, I ultimately found the whole film predictable and disappointing. The acting and editing is phenomenal, but the script is filled with clunky exposition, unrealistic character choices, and very obvious reveals. An anti-climactic climax is the final nail in the coffin. The film boasts an intelligent mystery, and resolves it with a campy predictable outcome that feels like a first pass at the script. I'm glad many people seem to have enjoyed the film, I just was wondering if anyone else felt the same way I did? Or am I completely in the minority here?

It actually in hindsight makes all the cryptic dialogue, bible verses, and imagery feel like it was put in there just to be cool and mysterious, rather than have any actual real meaning. Even things like "who called her to let her know about the birthday party at the end", why they use time periods where publicly corrupt presidents were in office pictured on the wall, and the idea behind the goals of Long Legs become pretty uninteresting when you realize it all boils down to "evil bad, satan bad, oh he said hail satan, he bad"

I watched this movie literally today having never heard of it, but my dad bought tickets on a whim and I gotta say it was better than I thought! My favorite scene was the parallel between Lee and Longlegs with their respective driving scenes in the same car. Nic cage was genuinely insane in this and I gotta give him props because his character was who Jared Leto wants to be when he method acts. Like holy shit. The whole atmosphere really helped with the suspense, with all the open space and all. The trailers for other neon films while in the theater made me genuinely want to watch them, and that usually doesn’t happen. I can’t wait for Cuckoo to come out.

Nic Cage's scream in the car was actually what completely took me out of the movie. The tension was building and letting it release that way was extremely unfulfilling. There were so many jumps in the storyline that were jarring like the movie had been chopped up to save time. ****Spoilers**** The whole aspect of putting souls in the dolls was also very unfulfilling. It's like they went "okay we have an interesting premise with a serial killer... let's just throw that out the window and SATAN IS BEHIND IT ALL." Even the whole "a gift from the church" part was very interesting. The mother was obviously involved from the moment you meet her. I really felt this movie lacked some cohesion in key moments. Moments when she was actually doing detective work and such were very interesting, but as soon as it completez the jump over to supernatural it lost me. Se7en is a great example pf how this should be done. Also "hey I conveniently have a photo of this exact guy in my childhood box of memories, so now we can go look aaaaaaand he's already caught. Just weird direction choices that could have been so much better. I understand I'm in the minority about this movie since everyone else seems to think it was great, but hey, that's cinema.

I liked the creepy atmosphere, but it has too many glaring plot holes. Longlegs started the murder-suicide killings in the mid 1960s, not visiting the Harkers until the 1970s. He had no accomplice that we know of, which implies he did go in the houses, even though the movie explicitly states that he didn't. It took the FBI 30 goddamn years to find one of the dolls that looks exactly like the murdered child? Based on the scene of her mom leaving one of the houses, she doesn't take the dolls with her. So... you know, a whole fuck ton of fingerprints. Speaking of FBI incompetence, did they seriously not figure out that there was someone else present in the house? Our forensics were pretty good by then, there's no reason they shouldn't have been able to tell in decades of killings that someone showed up at the house. This movie feels like they had an idea, but either didn't really think it through all the way, or they had to make the FBI incompetent to make it work.

I also think it's a more realistic view of the FBI. They just aren't that good. We are used to a Hollywood version of them doing heroic things. IRL...pretty shit.
@jakethesnake3439Ай бұрын
To be honest I think you're forgetting about the entire supernatural aspect. Most of your qualms sound more like overthinking than actual plot holes, especially since Longlegs is CLEARLY receiving otherworldly help from satan. Throughout the movie, it's clear that the Devil, and by extension, Longlegs, know exactly what's going to happen and how. Why is it so unrealistic to assume that satanic magic aided Longlegs in not being discovered via fingerprints, or that the FBI didn't put two and two together with the lifelike dolls. We see in one of the scenes where the random FBI forensics investigator seems completely entranced (and dare I say, enamored) by the Carry Ann replica doll after being exposed to it, it's perfectly reasonable to assume that a similar type of magic would hinder any attempts to capture Longlegs until satan deemed it necessary to fulfill his plan (which we see play out toward the end of the film: Longlegs gets captured, kills himself, "releases" his spirit/energy upon dying at the police station, while leading Lee Harker to the final crime scene on purpose
@THEno0BlyАй бұрын
I think you draw on some pretty good points! Although on rewatch, it’s implied that Lee’s mother isn’t the only accomplice the whole time. When Lee asks Longlegs who ‘she’ (her mother, the current accomplice) is; he replies that her mom is just another one given a choice to destroy what they’ve been given (allow their daughter to be killed) or get down and do dirty work (serve the man downstairs). The fact that no one has found evidence on there being another person in the victim’s house this whole time did take me out a bit though. Then again, the movie takes place in the 90s so my guess is forensics were not all that advanced at the time.

I think late night with the devil is verrrryyyyy overrated honestly a big let down to me, not scary at all very cheesy, story/ premise was good until the end when they ruined it all and made it stupid and dumb . You guys must just not watch much horror .

@@Skylerknowsphins People say Hereditary is like whoa so scary omg and it wasn't. People say the First Omen wasn't scary. To me - it was disturbing. It depends on which subgenre of horror you prefer. It's not really black and white. I believe jumpscares are outdated, they shouldn't be a thing in 2024, yet someone else loves those. Ok this is my honest review.. was expecting sooo much from this movie especially being compared to "Silence of the Lambs" (one of my favourites) ..not a Nicholas Cage fan at all - but everyone said his role in this movie was not like anything he has ever done.... the story line did not make sense, the main female actress did not connect with the audience or have any character development. The storyline was week - there was no real plot. Nick Cage's character was overdone - the key to Silence of the Lambs was that you connected with the characters - there was a plot .. Anthony Hopkins (with no over done make up etc) was there to help catch a serial killer... none of this applies. The filming style was good , and there were a few jump scares - but as far as it being a crime thriller - nope because nothing came together. Way too much close ups of the actress playing a sort of physic FBI agent - but no explanation. This film does not hold a candle to Silence of the Lambs or Seven... sorry ..

Wife and I enjoyed the film. The tense atmosphere was well crafted. Ending felt right to us, so YMMV. It's a slow burn, so if that's not your cup of team and you're like the couple behind us conversing throughout the film (and not about the film) and flipping people off who told them to keep it down, I'd suggest bringing a coloring book for the dark, especially if you're the type that lacks self discipline or basic etiquette.

I appreciated the correction so much lmao. It’s bugged me my whole life whenever movies do that. I said out loud “Revelation. It’s singular, there’s no S” at the same time as Maika Monroe, and then I realized that she said it too, and I felt so vindicated lol. And I can tell you from experience that her character would know that too since she grew up with a very religious mother. I agree completely about the ending, could’ve had it go for literally just a minute longer, and it would’ve been absolutely perfect. But as it is, damn if this movie didn’t blow me away. I walked out of the theater in a daze, couldn’t believe what I watched. And then my mind raced back to all the clues I missed over the course of the movie and realized that I could’ve seen a lot of things coming, and so much lined up perfectly. Longlegs deserves a second viewing, and I can’t wait to see it again! Completely loved it. For me, right now it’s a 9.8/10, but a second watch would probably give it that last 0.2
