Why the SpongeBob Movie Game is Just as Good as SpongeBob BFBB - Jeremy

Almost everything about Battle for Bikini Bottom is better than the movie game. For the movie game, you can't play as Sandy, SpongeBob is a weaker character, the driving sequences are boring and repetitive, the level design doesn't give fans the nostalgia we had while watching the movies or show itself, there's no Rock Bottom or Mermalair, and the sound effects were ripped from BFBB. The developers know BFBB is better, so that's why they reused assets.

One thing that I don't think many people noticed, is the Movie game probably only takes place like days or weeks after BfBB. If you turn around at the every start of the game and look towards where Goo Lagoon normally is in BfBB, you can see the Sand Castle you climb during the level. Since it hasnt been destroyed yet, by tides or otherwise, that implies the two games take place almost back to back

the movie is actually the end of the spongebob timeline and since there's no clear indicator for when that is other than spongebob employee of the month award wall then it most definitely could since we don't know when BFBB takes place. Although it's more likely just either a reference to the last game or leftover models since it's the same engine

Personally if I had been able to change anything about the game. It would definitely be the late game padding. I think what could have been better would to be to either reduce the amount of Tokens needed due to the linear style of gameplay. Or to open the levels up a bit, and have the goofy goober tokens be used to access areas of different levels (to kind of replicate the hub world like feeling of unlocking new areas). Being able to unlock more end game content would also be pretty fun. Like... "You got all the Tokens! SANDY MODE unlocked!" or something. That of course would be if the game wasn't rushed for development thanks to being a movie tie-in game. Overall, I still love the game as is.

While flawed, I agree that the movie game is good on its own merits. The only major issue I’ve had is that I own the Gamecube version, which suffers from audio looping, background character animations being cut, and the constant issue of the game soft-locking during loading screens. My guess is that, due the time constraints, these issues were present after porting the game to a less powerful console.

Yeah, I used to play the GameCube version when I was younger, but it performs better and looks so much nicer on the Xbox so I thought I'd get that version for the video. I would assume the same, thanks for watching!

My thoughts on the Movie Game are pretty similar. It’s definitely a blast to play. But once you get to the padding it takes a nosedive. I feel like these things could have been much better if they had more time. It would be more fun if the levels were more open, and looped around at the end. But I can definitely see why they did this. I also don’t really like how they have weird boxes rather than tikis. I definitely liked the platforming, and combat challenges. The driving and sliding were really fun the first time around, but the challenges were terrible. It’s a good game, but I don’t think that it’s as good as BFBB. The sliding music is definitely much better in this game though. Here’s my idea of an improved movie game (this could very well be a bad idea. Tell me if it is). The first level remains the same except the background fish are animated. For I’m Ready Depression it would have a few more sections like an arcade where you could use the different abilities like the Pier in BFBB. There would be a go-cart rink you’d unlock once you get the Patty Wagon. Think the last driving level but it’s outside with the town in the background, and it would look kind of fake almost like a min golf area. There would also be a few sliding sections to get around faster. The ring challenge would be a lot shorter, you can see the rings ahead, and the areas would be lit up like those tubes in the Spongebot brain. For the part where you leave Bikini Bottom it would look like a mashup of what we got, and the BFBB Downtown Bikini Bottom. This would be a good way to add some continuity, and make the area feel more familiar. It would still be linear so that the tract feels fun. For the Desert it would be kind of like Sandy’s dream where there’s a bunch of sliding. But there would also be platforming areas in between all the sliding. They would be too make the sliding less repetitive, and it would add more side objectives. Basically find a way to integrate the sliding and platforming and sliding so it feels more varied. For the Trench it would be kind of like what we got, but the sliding would be shorter so it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. The platforming section would be a mix of what we got, and feel like a linear Rock Bottom. For Planktopolis you’d be able to see the previous driving section in the background, but with statues, and new buildings. This would let you see where you were like how the different zones within BFBB levels can be seen in the background. I can’t really think of anything else other than more enemy variety, making the Patty Wagon play like a normal car, and some tweaks to the boss fights. This all sounds really good in my head, but I’m sure if I tried to do any of this it would end up horribly. The padding would also be cut down.

OH MY GOD I remember playing this game SO much, i fucking love this game i loved everything about it. I actually prefer playing this game over bfbb by FAR. In my opinion, this game is a masterpiece even with all of the flaws it has. Even my parents, MY PARENTS loved it! I mean my dad is also into videogames, but my mom, to get my mom inmersed into a game is almost impossible. This is the reason i owned a xbox (even though i wanted a damm gamecube but whatever lol) this is one of my favorite games of all time and it deserves a remake.(an actual GOOD remake) This is my favorite video from your channel now 😅

That's awesome, I love the game so much, it's my childhood! I got it for my gamecube for my 5th birthday and played the crap out of it. That's really awesome that even your parents got into it lol. I prefer replaying it as opposed to battle for bikini bottom for sure, it's so much fun. I'd love a remake of this, just hope it's better than bfbb rh. 3:30 IMO this is a flawed argument. That the movie has less material to work with doesn't mean that the movie game is as good as BFBB; it means that the movie is worse source material for a game than the show, and the movie game suffers for it. Personally, I don't see how the movie game could have been as good as BFBB when its source material has less content and is more restrictive. Many of the levels in the movie game are unmemorable to me because the movie features so few of the memorable locations from the show and replaces them with empty, desolate areas like the trench and Shell City. I think Goofy Goober's and the Thug Tug are the only areas in the movie that can compare to the personality of the areas from the show, and they're the most memorable levels to me because of it. I think the devs did a good job with what they had, but the movie game is a flawed concept from the start. I also don't like the movie that much, so I do have some implicit bias here

The movie technically was released November 19th, but you were close. And with the first movie turning 20 this year, I was wondering if Purple Lamp Studios should develop a "Spongebob Squarepants" movie collection where you replay events from the hit movie series from "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie" to the upcoming fifth movie, "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie 5: Search for Squarepants". The two badly received/mediocre sequels, "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie 2: Truth or Square" and "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie 4: Sponge on the Run" would be remade, reworked, or rewritten to improve their original film versions, or in the case of "Sponge on the Run", be more faithful to the series by scrapping the Kamp Koral subplot and reinstate that Spongebob met Sandy when she wrestled a giant clam instead of meeting at camp (just to name a few flaws). For the 3rd movie, I would not want to have "Spongebob Heropants" get remade. The only thing I don't know about is if this game should give you an option to play any movie's story in any order you want, or if you automatically start with the first movie's events, and play through the order of the films in their chronological order (First movie first, "Truth or Square" second, "Sponge out of Water" third, "Sponge on the Run" fourth, and "Search for Squarepants" last.). The Spongebob TV movies like "Atlantis Squarepantis", "Pest of the West", "Whobob Whatpants?" (just rewrite the whole thing with Spongebob winning a trip to New Kelp City and never have Spongebob's friends get mad at him), "Spongebob VS. The Big One", "The Great Patty Caper", and even "Spongebob's Big Birthday Blowout" could have their own DLC packs, allowing more levels. And depending on which movies you complete, Spongebob will unlock costumes to wear, each with special abilities like purple the Goofy Goober Rock outfit by completing the first movie's story, allowing Spongebob flight mode and having an upgraded sonic wave guitar ability. Or his Invinci-Bubble form by completing the third movie's story. You know, stuff like that.

I love that idea! That would be an incredible game, probably wouldn’t have it done this year though, the wait between bfbb remake and cosmic shake was almost 3 years, but I’m all for them doing a SpongeBob movie collection of games, kinda like the Lego Star Wars games do it

The game got released before the movie so if they used cutscenes from the movie they would be unfinished and rushed so it made sense for them to take photos and have someone narrate it Edit: I just found this today and this is probably my fav TSSM review because it isn’t too harsh to the game, but you are honest about it :)

Do you think that you’ll do a video on Truth or Square? The ds version is the best version. Same thing applies with Atlantis Squarepantis. I think the console version would have been much better it the levels were structured like BFBB where they’d be fairly linear, with a bunch of side objectives. For the maps since it’s a memory they could do remixes of old maps where it starts out normal, but then new things are added. Maybe areas in previous levels would be unlocked as you progress through the game. This all sounds amazing in my head, but I’m sure the execution would end up pretty bad. Do you think that you’d do any Halo videos, or is that not really something you want to do?

I do have an Atlantis squarepantis video planned for the relatively near future, but I'll be playing the console version, I have no way to get footage of the ds version unfortunately. And a truth or square video is coming at some point too. I don't have any plans with the halo series, maybe a master chief for smash video, but I don't have much experience with the series at all tbh

Honestly, for me, the movie game is definitely not on par with battle, better than dutchman but still nowhere near battle for me. The game just feels way too janky, even though both games were rushed out in order to fill a specific deadline the movie game feels like it way more. It's so janky from the small stuff like move and enemy hitboxes being wack, especially with trying to reflect with the upgraded spin moves, or the wall jumps being inconsistent when they're slightly angled, to even big stuff like how the sandwich controls in the driving levels. And going further on that the driving and sliding sections are complete ass. As you said before the controls for the sandwich are really bad, it feels like how it would actually feel like to drive a sandwich, it's almost impressive how they did that. And in the bathtub levels all your doing is holding forward and jumping for up to 5 minutes with, aside from some honestly cool speedrun tricks in some levels if you're even aware of those, no variation. Especially since you have to keep backtracking for goober tokens then sometimes the easiest way to farm them is to do the challenges which means you can be there bathtub sliding and sandwich driving for 15-45 whole minutes with nothing to do but hold A or hold forward. And this isn't even mentioning the combat and how bland it is, especially the challenges. You're just standing on a flat arena while hoards of enemies drop on you and it's not interesting and the only challenge is trying not to get thrown into the bullshit that is the enemies of this game and their spam. Which is another thing as the enemies have their own individual bullshit to them like the MERV robots and their RNG missiles of bullshit and their awful lasers. I don't know it feels like they took stuff from battle from bikini bottom like the enemies and how the progression works and while trying to made it better made it a lot worse. I like the jank and like the fact that it's based on the movie but it's just janky and bullshit enough for me not to see it as anywhere near on par with battle, hell I don't even think it's a good game, SpongeBob or no
