While Trip is a klutz being held at literal gunpoint. And both have connections to both the emeralds and a world ending monstrosity that Eggman tried and failed to control.

I think it was more they didn’t want to have a Peach or Pauline parallel for Sonic at the time. They didn’t want him to have a girlfriend. Amy was made into a fangirl as a twist on the archetype. She’s in love with him but Sonic isn’t interested. However annoying it might be to him though, he still saves her since it’s the right thing to do. This is why I don’t mind her having a crush on Sonic. The writing of it may vary but I like that it was a different spin on the typical platformer damsel in distress scenario which is probably why they changed their minds.

@@Abner-gu3ve Well he's not entirely wrong. The way Amy is written in any adaptation tends to vary drastically. One moment, she shows a more caring side to her (like in Sonic Adventures 2). The next minute, she's written as a possessive psychopath who can be downright unlikable (like how she was flanderized in the later seasons of the anime Sonic X). Amy has grown recently, but she also has been a victim of bad writing in certain adaptations.

1. Amy was in Sonic CD because of her tarot cards. She and Sonic were destined to meet and he's canonically known her even longer than even Tails. Amy and Sonic's feelings fluctuate due to them growing up as the series goes on, but they genuinely care a lot about each other despite getting on each other's nerves sometimes. 2. Unleashed is probably where Sonic genuinely starts to truly reciprocate her feelings since she supported him even in his Werehog form. He even agrees to go on a date with her. (Unfortunately, it's the same date he was late for due to Black Knight.) 3. Amy was essentially the second-in-command for the Resistance in Forces (and was frankly, a better leader than Knuckles was). This is brought up in the canon-compliant IDW comics where they discuss her role a lot and even have her lead the Restoration efforts for SEVERAL arcs. Sonic is very supportive of her efforts and admires her desire to help others.

Her tarot reading showed up again in Sonic Chronicles. Most recently it has shown up in both the IDW comics, as well as the Sonic Frontiers DLC, etc.

All the characters were meant to have thier own stories, but they ran out of time so they dialed it back to just the hedgehogs cause it was easier to just focus on them and tell a 3 perspective story. Even then Sonic's story is the least important ironically cause like most games of that era, Eggman was at most a catalyst for the REAL threat, but in Sonic 06.... even he had no idea Elise's death would release the flames of disaster and kill everyone. If you took him out of the story entirely, the story would make just as much sense only without Sonic having anything to do.

Amy's history throughout the series is rather interesting. You can tell that Sega have been struggling to figure out the ideal way to portray her in both gameplay and narrative with the constant changes made throughout the decades. I think they have finally settled on what they want to do with her now that Sega are marketing her along with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as a group. I'd like to see some return of her advance gameplay. While being unable to curl into a ball was annoying (and made no sense considering she is also a hedgehog) I always enjoyed the added height she got with her hammer jumps and the double height on springs when hit by the hammer. Advance 3 got it right when you made Sonic her partner as she kept those perks while still being able to curl into a ball.

@@jeremymklinger Yeah 06 has a lot of underrated portrayals. it has THE best Shadow the Hedgehog characterization. While he does seem stoic and unnecessarily rude at first, by the end of the game, you see how much he really appreciates Rouge and Omega as friends and allies after realizing how much they did for him and how Mephiles tried to break them apart. and he absolutely COOKED that ending where he says "I will fight like I always have" before eviscerating Mephiles's clones with Rouge and Omega behind him. Rawest cutscene in the series, or one of them. People see him as angsty caue of the memes, but he really is just focused on the mission and keeping the world safe. Similiarly, when you ignore the numberous "AMy only exists to swoon over Sonic" she is shown to be capable. Sonic X protrayed her as the power house of the team who uses her streght to destroy any threat without hesitation and doesn't actually swoon over Sonic as much as the trailers and screenshots imply. She genuinely tries to fight Eggman's threats. She also was alot more serious in the Fleetway comics, mostly being the "Take this serious for once" member of the team who kept Sonic in check when he got rude and slacked off. and of course, She was excellent in Prime, even if she was usually the sympathetic antagonist, it was a great way to show how misunderstood her character has been and give people a fresh view on what Amy really means as a character.

In Frontiers, I’d put her in Elite, she cared for each of the Koko the second she was freed and helped them solve each of their problems, without having any clue who or what they were. When Sage warned Sonic of his actions, Amy defended Sonic and his honor for protecting the world and his friends. And of course, played a major role in Saving Sonic’s life and helping with the cyber corruption, helping Sage defend against The End with that shield, and finding the Chaos Emeralds. I’d honestly say this is her best portrayal

Technically, only 1: Convince Shadow. Breaking Sonic out of his cell is immediately negated the moment you remember she wouldn't be anywhere near that cell (or alive, for that matter) if it wasn't for Tails saving her butt and doing all the heavy lifting on their way towards that cell. Keep in mind they never even bothered to explain how she got to Prison Island in the first place nor what her was plan to, y'know, stay alive without her only means to defend herself aka her hammer? So, why doesn't she have her hammer? Oh that's right, because Maekawa's "we must have damsel in distress scenes!" wouldn't work otherwise, so he had to downgrade her and only have her do the bare minimum minutes before freaking Armageddon to justify her presence, with half it being out of mere luck.

I'm going to disagree with the placement of sa2 amy for one tails saved her from eggman, she did let sonic out of prison but tails was going to do that any way and tails took out the gun robots on their way to sonic cell, amy didn't do anything to help with the pyrimid plan, and yes amy is the reason shadow turn good i would argue that if she wasn't on the ark then the plan to destroy the cannon would work. another reason why i want the adventure series to come back. adventure 1, 2 and 06 were by far the best and most consistent portrayals of her character in any of these games. she had a big crush on sonic, but was kind-hearted, caring and pretty compelling considering she doesn’t have any special abilities like the others. with the obvious exception of frontiers, her only modern character trait is just being mad in love with sonic.

After seeing a certain video, Amy definitely grew on me a lot, and I think Amy has gotten much better as a character over the years. Now I think she's a pretty essential character to the Sonic franchise. Her amazing portrayal in the IDW comics make me hopeful the games will follow suit. I loved her characterization in Frontiers. She still maintains her strong feelings for Sonic, but isn’t shown to be overly obsessed with him, and is fascinated by the profound nature of love that transcends time, and even life and death itself. She's for sure inconsistent, but I think the newer games and media present her in a more positive light, and she's really grown into her own. Another reason I love her so much is because of her sprite work in Advance 3. There was a ton of love poured into her sprites; I especially love when she's play companion to Sonic and has little hearts above her head. Adorable

I'm not sure whether I would put Amy at elite in Sonic adventure 2 because she isn't playable except in the multiplayer except that multiplayer is Sonic adventure 2 battle the remake on GameCube or I guess the GameCube port of the Dreamcast game. But even so that's not even the main story it's just the multiplayer. Prior to Amy making all the difference with Shadow she whines a lot in that game. I mean she realizes it before talking the shadow but still she is just kind of along for the ride and useless

I 100% agree with you with Amy on Sonic Origins Plus. While her Hammer Rush is not as good as Sonic's Drop Dash, there are some positives with that move. If you need to start running after you get on top of a platform while jumping up (Collision Chaos 3 after you defeat Eggman) use Hammer Rush to get to the capsule instead of using Spin Dash & if you drop off from a platform (Labyrinth 2, for example), you can do a quick turn to the opposite direction while falling down, too bad it doesn't work in S3&K for some reason. Also, her Hammer Attack destroys Bosses, if only that attack has i-frames like Sonic's Insta-Shield. I forgot to mention that water physics (aka slowing down while running underwater) while using Hammer Rush maintains her running speed.

3:26 wanna know an even worse portrayal of Amy? In sonic battle for the gba, which she is playable in. The story is about Emerl the Gizoid who was beaten up and presumably tortured by Baldy Mcnosehair after failing to comply his orders and washed up in Beach, Sonic finds him first and somehow triggered it till Rouge shows up knowing he set a "link" with Emerl, Shadow also shows up to surrender Emerl, they fight till Emerl somehow copies the two of their movesets and what not. Tails goes to study him while borrowing a Chaos Emerald from Knuckles, then absorbs it to get more powerful yada yada yada, till in episode Rouge, Amy shows up and Tails accidentally calls Emerl Sonic's "Baby", leading Amy to go full psychologically marrige mode thinking she got her fangirl wish dating back in SA2 which did the "will you marry me" joke first till it got worse in Heroes and so on. And if Sonic Heroes does get a remake, by good they need to fix her behavior cause SEGA would probably become woke either way.

Interesting video essay. That being said, honestly i dont mind Amy at all. i think shes an integral part of the cast, and the fact she has so many glaring flaws is what makes her a good character. Not every character has to be useful, OP, etc. sometimes it's okay to have a character just be "there". And I do feel Amy is a fan favorite, no matter which game much like Knuckles, Tails, Shadow, Cream, etc. Plus when the chips are down, despite her flaws Amy will always step up and have your back

*my ranking* Sonic CD - worthless (oh boy, here comes the hate from people who thought she was fine in Sonic Free Riders) Sonic Adventure - elite (this was where I started to love, or at least respect Amy) Sonic Adventure 2 - sidekick caliber (while one of the highlights that make the sixth-gen home console versions, the original Dreamcast version in particular, so good, almost as good as the original DC version of its predecessor, is undoubtedly the multiplayer mode and the last story where she, unlike Chris Thorndyke, was the one who changed Shadow the Hedgehog for the better... but oh boy, while nowhere near as bad as in future Sonic games, some if not all of her agency has been stripped away from her and when she told the most in-characters versions of Sonic & Tails that she hated them, that was where she started to disappoint for the second time; first if you count the infamous Sonic Shuffle where she would complain about her dress, which isn't just a harmful stereotype of young women, but she said it when her dress looked like it always did; not sweaty or dirty, so I don't even get where that came from) Sonic Advance trilogy - sorta capable (I mean, then again, I guess that's kinda sorta the point of Amy, that she may not be as strong as other Sonic characters but can still hold her own in her own ways... even though in SA2, she could actually roll up in a ball and grind, so while she can be fun to play as, she can take some time to get used to) Sonic Heroes - sidekick caliber (I'm just surprised "sidekick caliber" was ranked higher than "sorta capable", especially because of the fact that this was one of the first Sonic games besides Sonic Battle where she made Sonic look worse than her enemies just because he didn't fall in love with her, my man deserves better) Shadow the Hedgehog - barely does anything Sonic Rush - worthless (even as a fan of this game, I'll just run away from one of this of her that was flanderized because she's gonna hit me with her hammer for what I said!!!!) Sonic 06 - sidekick caliber (despite the fact that she did try to make herself useful alongside this version of Team Rose with Blaze and Silver... and mostly won despite this game's, ahem, bugginess, she still had some qualities that don't make her elite like in Sonic Adventure 1, like the fact that even when no one else seemed to unlike in Sonic Adventure 2, she took her sweet time figuring out it was Silver, not Sonic. But that's far from the worst thing about Amy in this game since like Princess Elise III, she literally admitted that she'd choose Sonic being her boyfriend/future husband over the world being in one piece) Sonic Unleashed - worthless (I mean, I could barely give her credit for her interactions with Professor Pickles, but outside of that, she decided to revert back to, like you called her in the description, the Princess Peach of the Mario franchise like how Sonic is Mario, at least before every game after Super Mario Odyssey, had to call Sonic out for his "misogyny" in case the player of the game selected the option for him to say he only likes her as a friend... and that ending in Sonic and the Black Knight... *shudders)* Sonic Generations - worthless (just like the rest of the overrated if somewhat enjoyable game's characters that ruined the story) Sonic Lost World - barely does anything (I mean, despite the game's lack of personality, especially when it comes to Tails and Knuckles and everyone else being abusive thus ruining the writing, she no longer hates Sonic for stupid reasons, so that's a plus, I guess) Sonic X - sidekick caliber (same as Sonic Heroes) Sonic Boom (games) - sorta capable Sonic Boom (series) - elite (there, I said it! I recommend using the original japanese stories of the sonic games and not english ones i understand you maybe dont know japanese and that is why you dont use them but windii has translated lot of the japanese cutscenes. (unfortunately most of her videos were deleted but there are some repost i have made a playlist of most of the reposts on my channel.) but other than that good video. There are also a few retranslated mods you can use. And the voice acting is just way better.

I like Amy’s character a lot throughout all games because though on a surface level she may seem one dimensional. But, she isn’t. She is courageous, caring, strong, rambunctious. I’ve been very attached to her for these very specific reasons, and since she is not treated like damsel any longer, she can now have more instances to be a character that we can continue loving and being entertained by on a larger scale.

Im so sorry but I really disagree on the SA2 take. I can agree that she helps the villains and heroes at « saving the world » kinda but she’s just there with the gang because she’s there. Nothing extraordinary in this character compared to the precedent game SA1. Which in the first SA game, she built more of her character a lot than just being useless or relying on Sonic all the time (which in SA2, she did just two things to helping both sides but even that, it’s just completely mid or not that much work). I’m sorry but SA2 must be a little down than « ELITE »

But there is wrong in stalking and even threatening to beat in submission. It's also lame to have your entire characterization by entirely based around another character. It's also why people preferred Amy's appearances in SA1&2 (the former where she has a flicky to help out, the latter where she talks Shadow out of revenge) or any games where she has other things going on that aren't her obsession with Sonic.
