It's definitely heartbreaking to see how unresolved conflicts can lead to such neglect. Sometimes, disputes can blind people to what's truly important. I hope sharing this story can serve as a reminder of the value of preserving our loved ones' legacies. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Heartbreaking. If that was my mom's house, I would want everything that is inside. Keeping the memory of my parents alive will be the most important thing for me... not money. I can make my own money but the objects and memory are unique and you cannot buy new one in a store.

I have my great grandmother's Singer sewing machine. I am 72 years old so you can imagine how old it is. It is in excellent shape too. That device you wondered what it was. It's not a cash register but it is a device to print checks. I would give anything to have that quilt on the first bed. It was beautiful. After so long the state should be able to take it over and try to save some of the antiques. That cottage by the pond is in better shape than the house and is probably older. They built things to last back in the day. Our builders should be ashamed of their work now. I truly enjoy your explorations.

I thought the same thing; that house in back is holding up much better. And that quilt, very likely hand made by someone that Clara knew and cared about. I love old quilts ♥ Just a shame.

My sister thought she was being had during the will and separation of items. She lived in the family home when dad died and when we picked out items we wanted, she would say, “ Where are you going to put that in your house?!” Very exhausting. Regarding the money, we had an Excel spreadsheet, a family lawyer she could talk to, and she still thought we scammed her. She wanted the family home as part of her inheritance and never let us see inside again. After that, if anything broke in the house, even years later, she would call my other sisters and wanted her siblings to pay to fix it. She said it was broken when she inherited. This went on for years! We have not spoken since 2004 and it has been the best 20 years. Her crazy behaviors started way before my last parent died. You could see it coming. But even with an authorized will and full disclosure, her end behaviors were very horrifying.

You have to look at the point of view this way and most kids don't when parents are gone and they want what they want. Your sister lived with him she was there every day for him, taking care of him, and helping do things around the house. She probably went to doctors appointments, up all night when sick. You had the luxury of going home and spending your time how you want to. The child that's at home with the parent has to deal with it all. There's bills, property taxes, home repairs etc. But when a parent goes everyone has their hand out, how about you were there for the parent and gave them a happy life in their days, and you settle with what you made in your lifetime. If they leave money make sure their house, all repairs are done if you have somewhere to stay let a family member live there.

The lamp looking thing you asked about at 27:35, is a decorative scale. It has additional glass jewels around the top center, but should have two saucer like scale sides held on by gold chains on each side

Honestly, I cannot judge the son and daughter too harshly for their stalemate in court. As someone with a sour relationship with their only sibling, I dread the future of handling our parent's affairs. These two siblings probably have A LOT of reasons why they're at odds that we'll never know about. It's sad to see so much property fall into ruin, but idk.... at the end of the day, it's just stuff. If the conflict truly was about memories and belongings, they would've found a compromise that gave both parties a portion of what meant the most to them. But I don't think their conflict is about property, at it's core.

Sometimes, and often, it's petty mixed with unfounded pride. The lesson for the viewers: get your family's assets in order and document with your intended heirs, adding stipulations to any heirs that contest after the party does die, immediately forfeit forever, their portion. It's the living person's responsibility to keep the process uncontested. Document, document, document.

I looked up this case on the Alabama Court site, and it said that their mother had made 2 wills, one in 1995, and another in 2007, The daughter believed that the older will from 1995 was the valid will. Her brother believed that the 2007 will was the valid one. So they have had a court battle for years, suing, and counter-suing. Meanwhile, that beautiful home and all its beautiful & valuable contents is sitting there rotting! They are not allowed to go into the house because of the court battle. How very sad!

You are so caring and respectful of the people who once lived in these fascinating houses. A good indication to when the owners last lived there are prescription bottles or pill containers ( if they are in plain sight like the two bottles in the kitchen ) and if there is no calendar. Bless your sweet heart. Love from B. C. Canada 🇨🇦 I’m 70 yrs. old. I just saw that thing you called a cash register. I worked in banks in the 1970’s. It’s for certified cheques, you slide the check lengthwise in on the bottom slot, enter the amount, pull the lever and it puts an official seal and embosses the amount on the check. So nobody can mess with the amount of the certified check. Hope I explained that okay. ❤

Hello Jeremy, GREED is a powerful voice! A lot of people in my family are the same. Let me tell you, it’s a Horrible thing. Just like this story, it tears a family apart and those with this greed are the ones who suffer! The condition of this home and the sentimental items left behind are forever lost. Like you said, so many wonderful Collector Items worth something will soon not be worth anything. This is proof that families must come together to save what is truly important, and that is maintaining the family itself and all the love they once shared! Thank You for sharing this story, and hopefully those seeing it will realize what they have been doing and make a change before it’s too late. Hi Jeremy! I get what you’re saying about all that stuff in the home & guest house. I’m not positive, but I believe once the kids stared bringing in lawyers, & in went in probate, they couldn’t go in there & take anything etc. Hands off until it’s settled & all the taxes & any bills of the late owner are paid. Since the kids never settled, it sits there & rots. Crazy. When we lived in Louisiana, there was a beautiful cottage we were interested in. It was in probate for years & when we left the state a couple years later, it was still in probate. So sad. Thanks for another great explore! Great seeing you. What an amazing find with such a sad story! I imagine Mama didn't have this in mind when she was imagining the future of her children when they were still babies. It bears my heart that they were so stubborn, that in the end, they lost the ability to keep memories of happier times alive as well as whatever it was that was SO important to them thst they had to fight over it! Now, of course, it is mostly in ruins. Such a sad, sad end to a beautiful abandoned home. Thank you for sharing this amazing find!!! ❤❤

Unfortunately, antiques aren't going for what they used too. My parents were collectors going back to the early 60's (both of their parents collected too) and were living in New Hampshire. They would buy old Colonials that were from the 1600's and 1700's fully furnished with antiques, fix up the houses and sell them. They had their pick of what to keep and what not to, so they had really good stuff. Well, back in 2015 my parents wanted to retire to Florida and decided to sell off the antiques, but not a lot of people were interested. Apparently, much of the younger generations aren't attracted to them like the previous generations - is at least what my parents were told by many people who sell them and they are actually looking to get out of the business (some after 40 or 50 years as antique dealers) because of very slow sales. Older people aren't buying that much anymore and the young people dont want anything to do with them. So, after a while my parents pretty much sold it all for pennies on the dollar. Times certainly have changed. There just isn't a big enough market anymore - supply and demand. Hopefully others have a different story. Anyways, it's sad to see what the kids have done ( or haven't done) with the family house. I wonder just how far back their anger goes for one another - I can guarantee it didn't start at the Will, it's been going on for some time.

It seems that many antiques have taken a nosedive in recent years. The youngest generation collect experiences not "things" so most items, with the exception of art work and Mid Century Modern items, have severely decreased in value. Many older people looking at the rotted furniture will think it expensive and valuable, when, in fact, it is not. The dwelling itself is probably the most valuable asset, but sitting and rotting away really it is not so much either.

The crystal artifact that you pulled out of the closet looks to be the base of a scale. The green machine with the handle (in the room w/the clothing) is a check impression machine. My father was a businessman and had/used an old one.

We don’t know the backstory behind the competing wills. There are so many possibilities that it’s not for us to judge (response to comments in chat & here). It’s possible that one of her children did something that made her so angry that she cut him/her out of the will. Splitting it may not be her wishes. Another possibility is grandchildren. If one of her kids has more grandkids she may have adjusted inheritance accordingly. Instead of 50/50 for his 2 daughters, my grandfather made his will to equally divide 7 ways-2 daughters, 5 grandchildren (3 to one dau & 2 to other). The dispute may not even be about monetary greed. There could be squabbles over sentimental items with no monetary value (handmade items, etc). This happened in my family. No legal disputes but longstanding hard feeling. Such as for instance over a very old family drum that is set under the Christmas tree that wasn’t delineated in the will. Not squabbling over money-but that drum is nostalgic & worth more than any money.

I feel the same way you do. We don't know the backstory of their lives and conflicts. At the end of the day, this impasse they've reached probably has NOTHING to do with the items in the house and everything to do with family history. And as we all know, just because someone is family doesn't mean we like, love, or tolerate them.

Absolutely heartbreaking what greed can do to a family after a loved one has passed away. My sister's 3 sons(my nephews) still refuse to even speak to my brother because of how he acted when their dad(my nephews' grandfather) passed away. Before he passed he had promised my oldest nephew his car but once he was gone my brother did any & everything he could to screw them out of almost any inheritance at all. Things shouldn't be that way. Greed is an evil that comes in many forms I suppose. So sad to see the way it tears family apart. In the end no one really wins. Everyone loses but of course their pride would never let them see it that way.

Those similar-looking pink chairs were probably not antiques, or at least not by the definition of 100+ years old. My parents had a pair of chairs exactly like them in the early '70s and they were replicas. My father still has them. They're of an interesting design. The chair with arms was for the man and the one without was for the woman, to accommodate hoop skirts, bustles, and the like. Great explore, as always, Jeremy! When I'm winding down to go to bed at the end of the day, I know I can always count on one of your fascinating but soothing videos to take me out of my headspace. I never get sleepy! Just relaxed and thoughtful, a nice place to be.

Around the 27 minute mark, that silver thing with the crystals dangling from it is actually a weight measuring scale.. The only parts missing are the tiny chains that hold up plates that you would put whatever on one side and the other side would have the weights placed on it..

It is sad, but with all the abandoned explorers documenting these homes, we see so much of the very same thing. I know there's different stories and reasons for memories and homes being left and only those connected know the whole story. They should have at least had the power turned off. The mother actual may have been a hoarder, trying to fill the loss of her husband and maybe the loss of the children not coming to see her? So she fill her home and life with a lot of things. Sad, no matter the reasons.

That wasn’t a cash register Jeremy. That is known as a paymaster. It is/was used to issue a business check for a certain amount of money. It was used as a safeguard to prevent check alteration. Madame was a hoarder.

I wouldn’t think anything would be up for dispute. The newest will should cancel out the older one. Whatever that says is how it goes. Shouldn’t even be something you would be able to take to court.

The machine you thought was a cash register looks more like what we called a check cutter. Back in the day when I worked for the bank we had these and when we typed cashier checks we had to emboss the checks in the center with these machines

I'm pretty shocked these properties were not ransacked and vandalized. It must be well out of sight, huh? My Mom passed and it ruined the remaining relationship between us siblings. Greed, selfishness all kicked in during her probate. Sadly, it's very common that this happens. With sibling rarely living in the same cities or states anymore, those sibling relationships often fizzle out. When siblings reach their 40's and 50's, patience levels for siblings or anyone else who bring drama or crap to our lives run short. Thus, many sibling are fine not having contact with a sister or brother anymore. As is the example of this video, when siblings are not close at the time of a parents death, it can put a nail in the coffin for any further contact or relationship when the parent/s assets are fought over.

Oh boy, the story and music were beautiful. wow such a shame that these brothers and sisters can't get their shit together. To see all of this to go to waste. Alot of this stuff could have sold or donated. That thing in the closet is a scale, the two end pieces were missing, they hang with chains and small trays attached to each chain then you put weights to balance things, to calculate weight. The other item I believe was used in banks to mark cheques or money orders the amounts. I could be wrong. Thanks for sharing.

What a shame that greed and selfishness got in the way of saving this house and Mama's treasures! When my parents passed, my brother and sister began the feud over who gets what, and I walked away, never to look back. "Things" can never replace loved ones. 14:45 boy, would I love to have that mantle for my fireplace! "22:25 -> 2-2-71 first solo" corresponds with the pilot's certification you found at 24:18. 27:10 appears to be a scale. 32:40 that looks like an old PayMaster. It was used to print checks.

The Green Machine is not a cash register, but rather a check imprinting machine. You used the levers to set each value ( including$ and . for cents), slid the check stock in then pulled the larger lever to raise the check up and embossed the monetary amount on the check. 😮 I used one in the 80's when we had to cut manual checks out side of our compurter generated and printed regularly scheduled bi-weekly check runs.

Yes, that is correct! I used one of those machines when I used to work in a small office, back in the 80's & 90's. I would imprint the checks and then my boss would sign them.

"somehow the power is still on"....in most states to keep a house insured you have to maintain the power and or water. So someone is paying taxes and insurance on it. Friendly FYI and meaning it is not truly abandoned....

Sure it was a beautiful home once. All the antiques. The sofas, chair, lamps, etc. I would love to have and how their being ruin by nature. Her children should be ashamed of themself allowing this to happen to items their mother loved. They should compromise and just half what's in the home, each choosing and item they want until everything is settled on. Whatever isn't wanted could be donated to charity, or someone in needs. It's heart breaking to think no one will get anything now due to greed. I can't understand kids any more. I'm very sure they were raised better and loved very much. I honestly feel sorry for them as due to each wanting everyone, neither will get anything. What a pity.
