The example athletes you provide all split jerk. Does this video tip also apply to power and squat jerks?
@CatalystAthletics5 жыл бұрын
Yes, foot work has nothing to do with the grip. Everything else is identical. Applies to the push press as well.

Hey Greg! I'm back again asking a general question: I am at the point, where I haven't missed hardly any lifts lately, because I'm not in an Olympic gym... PRs on my snatch 100kg, C&J 150kg and I'm at 84kg bodyweight. I use a typical gym, and control the weight on the way down, trying not to slam weights, being very controlled, at those numbers. Am I robbing myself by keeping enough in the tank to lower the bar instead of drop it? Or, am I not really saving all that much by not putting it all into my lifts? Should I just bite the bullet and get into an Olympic gym? Or is this a false cop out? Short Version: is the control and use of strength robbing me of power output? Thanks in advance, I know you answer every question on your channel. Keep up the good work!
@CatalystAthletics5 жыл бұрын
One could reasonably argue that you're gaining some additional strength by having to lower the weights. One could argue you're limiting your potential. I'd argue it's not ideal, but if getting to a WL gym is very difficult for you, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you get to a point where you want to get a lot more competitive, I'd consider a more appropriate gym.
@stuarttaylor72975 жыл бұрын
I think that kind of answers the question. I want to compete... I'm about 90% recovered from the wrist injury you replied to me about. Throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it was the right medicine. Justin Thacker used to own The Lab, but since he has passed, there aren't any real reputable coaches in my area (St. Louis). Do you offer any online coaching? And if so, could you please send me a link so I can pay you? Lol

Hi, thank you again for making these videos! I have learned a lot from them. I am having an issue with my front foot landing short in split jerk causing too much knee bend and unstable receiving position. Any tips on how i can fix this would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Do I HAVE to widen my grip after the clean? I usually just release the hookgrip after the squat because whenever I try to widen it, my two hands travel unevenly, making for an unbalanced overhead position.
@CatalystAthletics5 жыл бұрын
No, your jerk grip doesn't have to have any particular relationship to your clean grip - it can be wider, narrower or identical. You definitely should release the hook for the jerk, and you should likely adjust the rack position itself even if the grip width stays the same. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4mXqHl_lNupmKM

Should you use internal or external rotation in the jerk, with wider jerk style i mean.

Essentially neutral in terms of IR/ER just like the snatch. www.catalystathletics.com/article/2190/Internal-Rotation-Overhead-in-the-Snatch-Really/

why do you not see wide grip squat jerks?
@CatalystAthletics3 жыл бұрын
Because squat jerks are extremely difficult, and a very wide grip in front is inaccessible to most lifters. It only makes sense from a purely mechanical perspective (i.e. minimal bar elevation need), but once you factor in the actual qualities of human beings, it's not a sensible choice.
@greglindstrom17053 жыл бұрын
@@highestthumos i thought you could go wide grip for shoulder mobility, but I guess a wide grip clean front rack is equaly hard on your shoulders.

Hey Greg, So I can push press 255 but I can only jerk 240. I feel like when I do a jerk(power or split), it puts too much strain on my elbows and I end up dropping the weight. Any tips on resolving this?
@CatalystAthletics5 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I'd first look at how you're meeting the bar, i.e. are you continuously pushing up into it and moving down only as much as needed to lock it out, or are you dropping down excessively and allowing the bar to crash on you. How are you hands/wrists positioned, is your upper back set properly, etc. You just need to take a look at each element of the jerk and check them off. See these - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIG3XqdjpZd_Y8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXi3fpWidreAY8U www.catalystathletics.com/media/video/search/?show=search&search_terms=jerk&submit=

Hey Greg, have a question, what about shoulder mobility and external/internal rotation? Some weightlifters looked like they were using internal/not-so-external rotation with the jerk. So first, I tried internal rotation, which caused me to drop the bar to the front, especially with squat jerk. Then I tried external rotation. This time it prevented me from using a narrow/neutral grip because of shoulder mobility (I can not strict press with narrow grip into an external rotation either). Wide grip seems to fix those issues but now I have to keep pushing much harder to stabilize the weight overhead. Cleaning 150, could not jerk anything above 120. Any ideas?
@CatalystAthletics Жыл бұрын
If you mean in overhead position, it'll be slightly more IR but not complete by any means. Wider grip is less stable but a 30kg disparity suggests something more than just OH position being the problem, eg the drive, how you move into the split, etc. I would just search "jerk" here and check out some of the possibilities - www.catalystathletics.com/media/video/
@harung27 Жыл бұрын
@@CatalystAthletics What I meant was; if I do internal rotation in the overhead position, my arms doesn't go as far back so the weight drops forward. If I do external rotation, I need a very wide grip because now my shoulders won't allow me to use narrow grip.
