Just got out of ICU. Relearning bass again. I started bass in 2014. I am 66 now. Been a steady choice bass player at church since 2016. Will be again. Just got to get over the stroke and aneurysm and get the strength back in the left hand. The doctors said bass would be the best therapy! Yeah!

Best wishes brother I'm going through the same thing. I had a seizure in 2022. Wrecked my whole left hand having to relearn everything. I'm still working at it. 12 years of playing gone😢

@yedidiyanikelo789 heal well brother, the process after a stroke or a seizure is different I believe. You lose all co ordination on your left side even walking is a chore. I wish my hand was broken, but I feel you in terms of not being able to play..

I can totally relate with not being able to retaining information after several hours of practice time. I've played for over 20 years, mostly jazz standards. Decided to get into a cover band to try to make a little money for fun. I found a band in Music Connection a "Beatles" cover band that was paying the most at the time, I met with a few fellas they liked me and I was in. Thomas, the guitar player gave me a whole stack of Beatles songs, all the sheet music written out in piano treble clef. He expected me to learn 20 songs in just a few weeks because there was a gig coming up. Anyway, I put myself on a strict regiment practicing schedule. I went through this sheet music morning, noon, and night just trying to get a feel for it. On the day of the gig I could only remember the first four songs of the play list the rest of the day was choppy doing a lot of improvising and playing by ear. Eventually I did memorize the rest of the material but some of these band leaders put too much pressure on us bass players, they think just because the bass guitar is mostly a single note instrument it's got to be easy to memorize 20 songs in just a couple days. I mean come-on bro give me a break, I'm not a computerized robot with artificial intelligence. It takes a long time to learn that much material, let alone memorize it.

What you said!! Talk as much wisdom as you are led and let the trolls find another channel. The number system notation is a game changer for jogging the memory when it is time to minister. Fixing and strengthening your weaknesses is a must for improvement. Every point you made I used them to get me out a playing rut several years ago. I’m a witness that it works!

Man, this helped me immensely! Focus on targeted areas is definitely where I need the most work, in my opinion. Keep talking, just remember it may not resonate today. It's been over 20 years since I've last picked up a bass. I've never played church music before because the style that we play in Hawaii are mostly reggae. Simple but repetitive, which doesn't have a lot of room to explore. It kept me from progressing. But, After watching your videos, I've become more in tune with my bass. Thank you sir. I began working on a system very similar to yours a few years ago in a Praise Band I was playing in. I have since began using it in all the music I play. While I don't use the Nashville system, I do use the OnSong app and it allows me to change keys in seconds. It also has an 'annotation library' section that has helped me greatly so I don't get lost. It's nice to get confirmation that others are using this same type system. It was slow at first, but continually gets faster. It has been well worth the effort.😁 Thanks Jermaine.

I pretty much like everything that you said you confirmed some things that I was already doing and some things that I need to add to what I'm doing for example writing down my critique of myself I think that's a great. I started as a flute player and I found that after I picked up the bass a few years ago my ears and listening to music have been improved I am able to hear chords and automatically find the right key of those cords much faster.

I have been playing bass since 1979 at the age of 12. Played in a few throw together garage rock bands in the 80s. In 1990, I started playing in traditional and contemporary church chiors and worship / praise bands (pretty much nonstop 24 years on that scene). I dabbled in a few short-lived bass lessons with teachers. I can play off chord charts, and I know how to read sheet music, but I really want to strengthen my music theory of scales, etc.

Hello Jermaine. Thanks for posting these types of videos. I'm new to bass and have been trying to self teach myself for a year now. I picked it up last March so one year is approaching. I've made some great strides in the beginning but feel like I've hit a wall to my progress. I'v signed up with different online programs which have been very helpful to my overall learning and I even had a teacher for a few months, which I didn't find as helpful as I've heard. I practice 3 to 5 days a week on average for approximately 1-2 hours a night. I struggle with learning notes, chords, and speed. I also have some flying fingers going on but not too bad but I don't want the to get out of control. I'm 56 so I'm an older learner and wanted to know how can I find the right system to improve in my problem areas and overall learning?

I got good fast by joining different style bands. I was playing salsa, country, rock, metal, tejano and just learning playing in the key and noticing the habits of musicians. It seems like a lot but if you learn keys and playing in circles, aka jazz falls (Autumn leaves), you'll be okay.

We can't have sheet music during the service and must be able to roll through the song

Understood!! Learning the notes, or rather knowing your fretboard is important for sure, but knowing the numbers gives more freedom… If the key of the song is changed last minute and you’re only going off notes then you’ll have to be quick transposing the notes in your head. With numbers it’s all the same.

Hi Jermaine, I’m kind of stuck on the rhythmic patterns, as in my church we play some modern music and the rhythmic patterns are variants in a way that I have to memorize many changes in a single song, could you help us out in that matter, I use the letters, and numbers system for the melodic, Just need a method for rhythmic patterns

I have a problem knowing all the notes that are on the fret board. In other words when I play the major scales for example I know the C major scale C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C. But when I play the D major scale I know the root note is D, and buy looking at my bass, I don't know what the 2nd note is. But I know that all major scales are played with the same pattern. So in other words I can play a D major scales but I want know what all the notes are that I am playing.
