THEORY TIME: First of all, more Latin. “Fluctuat nec murgitur” means “She is tossed but not sunk”. This pretty much confirms that Kaia is still alive. Onto the interviews, “2” is clearly being threatened in some way by grizzco to not reveal the information that he knows, which I theorized based on the interview on tape 2. The tape also acknowledges that the caller is particularly young. This could be an important plot line for his character. I’m addition to that, Warabi reveals that 2’s name starts with “Re”. Based on how much info we’re given about him, it’s likely that he’s an important character. Going deeper into the info were given, it seems like in this universe (if you can call it that), water doesn’t instantly dissolve inklings and octolings based on how it’s stated that sometimes workers will break their recorders easily by tripping into water. From the tape recording that’s played we can hear a normal run with what I think is a splattershot and a charger, and they finish the run normally. After the jingle played at the end of runs though, we hear a modulated horn followed by what sounds to be Kaia drowning. I’m fairly certain that it’s not a cohozuna, because we never hear the emergency sirens. It’s also extremely notable that none of the workers had returned to the helicopter or boat when this happened, meaning that what grizzco had stated about Kaia working overtime was completely fabricated, possibly to cover something up. It also flashed “Something’s in the water, I love you I hate you. One last detail, Kaia didn’t seem to trip or fall in, but we can audibly hear her being pulled in the water, struggling to stay afloat. tldr: It’s probable that Kaia is still alive, but what Grizzco stated about her disappearance was completely false, possibly trying to cover something up. This series is really amazing despite there only being 3 episodes so far. Keep up the good work! (And I get the college struggle too!)

One detail, I would like to point out is that her last shift was at the Polaris Arch Ruin. If you know Splatoon 3 Lore, you know how import that place is to Mr.Grizz and for Humans as well. So in theory Its possible, Something else survive with Grizz

When Kaia is being pulled into the water, I am fairly certain I hear an egg-snatcher, meaning Kaia might’ve been dragged into the water, crawled back out in a weakened state, then carried away by an egg snatcher, hence why “She is tossed, but not sunk”

Alright going off of the Tape Title Kaia is most likely still alive but that she’s lost somewhere in Salmonid waters, but she didn’t voluntarily go into the water and it’s almost like something was dragging her in which is why she didn’t get into the chopper with the rest of the workers which is later confirmed with the phrase “can’t stop breathing” and “something is in the water”. Don’t know what “I’m feeling every part of you” or “I love you I hate you” means but maybe the latter could be Kaia thinking about her loved ones while also resenting Grizzco and possibly her coworkers who left her behind. 2 is most likely scared because Grizzco is actively stalking them as iirc in the first tape Grizzco made a passive aggressive threat towards workers and their families, Warabi is cool as fuck.

Something I haven’t seen anyone else note is the line at the end saying “even a fake sky would suffice.” Reminds me of the octarian bases with all the lcd screens, that make the fake stars and such. It could also be alterna, but we don’t know where the entrance to alterna is relative to ark Polaris. And since octarian hideouts are found pretty much everywhere, it is safer to assume that’s what it is.

THE LAST PART WAS SO INCREDIBLE!!! I loved how the audio continued past the last line on screen! And MAN the sound of Kaia struggling in the water is terrifyingly realistic, I haven’t heard a real inkling scream before it caught me off guard. 10/10 also that message at the end really brings alterna to mind. Maybe something in alterna is trying to harvest the ink crystals again?

I'll toss my hat in the ring, why not. Kaia isn't dead. Not even close. In fact, I have reason to believe Kaia is either being used by Salmonids for something, or has genuinely accidentally (or with help) ended up in Alterna, as a big focus of Alterna's Logs was the LCD sky humanity was so insufferably proud of. If Salmonids merely kidnapped Kaia, she is likely to reappear later in the story being used as a bargaining chip, likely in an interaction between Octarians and Salmonids (as we know Salmonids have engaged in trade with Octarians for technology, notice we never received word on what it is exactly they were trading WITH). If Kaia ended up in Alterna, however, this might potentially take an even darker turn. Kaia might be the first or perhaps one of many disappearances that Grizzco is staging to harvest inklings for his plan in Story Mode. If however this ISN'T Grizz' doing, this might be Salmonids trying to use an inkling as a hostage against Grizz or maybe them putting Kaia into Alterna in an attempt to slow down or stop Grizz. The key aspect of this situation is the fact that Grizz is covering up Kaia's disappearance aggressively, and the fact that Grizz doesn't want anyone actually falling into the water without a life vest. If we assume everything operates as in the game, the life vests are responsible for "drowning" the worker and respawning them on land, making what happened to Kaia impossible. However, having shed the work suit or having had the life vest taken off of her, Kaia wasn't brought back to land and instead taken by... Something. My guess? Salmonids are smarter and maybe even more empathetic than we think, and Kaia might be getting a sneak peek into Salmonid society and be becoming a sort of envoy to the Salmonids, to reveal the truth to greater Inkopolis. If Kaia emerges from the waters, Grizzco will want her DEAD, and the police will have to keep her safe somehow. Just a guess though!

Hmmm, I’m not so sure. I slowed down and analyzed the sentences that appear after her screams. Something about hating someone, loving someone, not being able to stop breathing, having noticed that something is in the water, and feeling every part of “it”. I agree that Kaia is still alive, but not in the way you guessed. I think we have a bad case of sink.exe. It’s a sonic.exe where he is trapped in labyrinth zone underwater with no way to escape, yet his will to live keeps him alive as a zombified version of himself. Maybe Kaia is experiencing the same things, where somehow, she does not die in the water. Considering game logic, she should have died as soon as she entered the water, or at least a second later. Her struggling shows that she remained audibly alive for longer than inklings do in water. If she didn’t die when she should have died, she most likely won’t die. I do agree that something most likely pulled her down, hinted by the “feeling every part of it”, but I don’t think we can understand what that thing is yet. Maybe “it” refers to “becoming part of something bigger than yourself”. Maybe there is something else, something that ISN’T in the game. And Alterna? We all know that from the story mode that Alterna is right in the middle of a giant crater far from any bodies of water. But I’ll give you a point for your ideas about the salmonids. Maybe they are more passionate that they appear. Maybe their crazed eyes are only found in those who wage war and go insane watching their siblings die, and the rest are just friendly fish. One more thing: I think the reason Grizzco is trying to sweep the disappearances under the rug is mainly for legal purposes. However, from some scenes, I think the people working in the company are scared of the disappearances. They know how dangerous fighting salmonids is, they know what the nightmarish army under the water consists of. Maybe there are still things that they DONT know about the salmonids, and think they have something to do with the missing crew members. Who knows?

@@Ohhekno10102 The "fake sky" can refer to either Alterna's sky (that manifested from a collective human wish to see it again), or it could refer to Octarian locations, as Octarians use large monitors to simulate skylines in Hero Mode too, a detail I seldom see people mention. It's funny how much Octarians parallel humanity in that way, being reactionary, prone to war and stuck underground for so long they needed gigantic monitors to not forget what a sky looks like.

I'm good at listening and figuring out stuff with only audio, so based on what I heard, this is what I think happened during Kaia's shift: At the start, everything seems to be going normally. Preparing for their shift and conversing with her fellow workers. Until the horn sounds off the start of the salmon run, Mr. Grizz tells them to get to work. Cut to first wave, everything seems to be going okay. Besides getting bumped around by a Scrapper. Either Kaia or a co-worker was using a Splattershot or Charger weapon. Cut to next wave. Most likely getting overwhelmed by Grillers. She ends up getting separated from her squad. Somehow, they all survive and Kaia takes a moment to collect herself. In the distance, her teammates are calling her attention to come towards them and head back to the boat. She hears them and makes her way over. Her team is supposedly back on the boat, she makes it to the edge until the tide dramatically changes and she stops momentarily. She tries to get their attention so they don't leave without her, but she's suddenly ambushed by salmonids and pushed/tossed into the water. She struggles to get out and call for help, possibly being dragged down by the salmonids until the audio device cuts out, possibly breaking in the process. This is what I think happened based on what I hear. It might not be exact, but to those who are also theorizing what happens, I hope my input helps. This is a very interesting investigation indeed.

Oh, one more thing. Keep in mind, in the past tapes we learn Kaia worked in the Inkopolis branch (Inkopolis Square). And Marooner's Bay isn't (yet) a playable map in Splatoon 3 currently. So they're still going through shifts by boat. But that doesn't mean it couldn't be tied with the Cohozuna's, event in Splatoon 3, or something related with Alterna just yet. If anything, it could be something entirely new and different. Maybe even something much worse...

I also did some research in these topics of if Kaia is alive or not and I think I found damaged footage from the cams clear as day but hidden from view as a scary image. so you know when they talk about avoiding the police in the second tape then it cuts to black then a sound is heard and something comes out of the dark the sound goes off you notice a small little thing appearing in the black abyss if you brighten that it’s the spitting image of an inkling sinking to the bottom missing the ledge and going even deeper likely the last image able to be taken before the body was out of view of view and whatever happen to it is what is shown plan as day it then cuts to that strange yellow image which again if you brighten and touch up the picture enough has inkling features in it and a strange skull that looks a lot like a salmonoid and also pieces of what remains of them almost a picture perfect skull if you do it right it’s mostly get this a yellow/orange ink it’s covered in symbolistic to when an inkling splat’s except something goes wrong…no inkling soul flys away to the respawn pad this photo was most likely taken by whoever fished her out. My theory is she is not alive but trapped in the deep dark abyss her body lost which begs the question of if this is alive or dead cause the soul only need to go to the respawn pad to regain their original form another question is how did their soul get extracted and my theory is there is in fact truely something down there ether in the water or maybe just maybe I S T H E W A T E R

Holy shit the sounds of her screaming and the water cutting the audio is absolutely haunting. Phenomenal series honestly, I love seeing people delve into the bits of darker splatoon lore, or portray their world as more of a gritty and unforgiving one, more like ours. I love the playful stuff as much as I love the dark stuff but it's so interesting to see what it could be like beyond all the bright colors of turf wars and the happy energetic music.

WOW! That was amazing!!! You did so well in developing the story, and the part where Warabi is talking off the paper, the mixing made it sound so real! And the way you make custom voicelines for the characters instead of reusing the official ones is very rare to see in fanmade videos. And Kaia's audio recording was so good! It was also really scary, not just because of the context, but the fact you never hear the characters like this. You'd always expect an Inkling to be the cheery selves they are, but hearing them in such distress like this is so out-of-the-ordinary and terrifying! I'm really looking forward to the next tape. First; kudos to the production quality on this one, holy crap! Second, I think something notable about the clip at the end is that recordings get ruined easily by water, yet we hear sounds of water moving against the mic, suggesting that teammates were trying to get Kaia out of the water before she drowned. My theory? She's in Alterna somehow. The Fake Sky comment makes me think this way.

the drowning screams at the end of the recording actually unsettled me, good job on another topic, if i had one thing to criticize about this series, it's the numerous spelling mistakes (even more present in this tape), which is a shame because it tends to break the immersion, although i might be the only one bothered by it and there might be factors that i'm unaware of anyway won't keep me from liking this series though, so keep it up!

We can see this through alterna logs, the reasoning behind splatfests being transmissions being sent back from our era of time, and other small details such as "beware of bears" signs being in english in the Ruins of Ark Polaris salmon run stage. So theoretically, there could be inkling historians that study our era and language

This makes me think that, whatever this thing(s) is, its safe to assume that they are… human. But not the human that we’re familiar with. Whilst they did survive the collapse of Alterna, the radiation and other chemicals, combined with the liquid crystals, likely mutated the surviving humans beyond recognition. Like the evolved inklings, these mutant creatures also escaped, most likely long before the inklings first stepped on Alternan land. And wherever those humans went, disaster followed, as they brought the mutating slurry along with them. It poisoned the waters, mutating other aquatic life that wasn’t in Alterna. Including the salmon. Now, many centuries later, these creatures are beginning to make a move on inkling society, as to their reasonings, I see three possibilities: 1- the mutant humans are just so irradiated that they’ve lost all sense of intellect, and only act on instinct. 2- the mutants just want to return to the surface. There is a possibility that they dragged Kaia down by accident, mistaking her for a human being, so they tried to add her to their ranks by dragging her into the toxic water. 3- the mutants are acting out of spite to the inklings and octolings, as they’re jealous of their new mollusk overlords.

Judging from the audio recording, Ikai was part of a Salmon Run Shift. It was just another regular shift however something must have happen for Ikai to flee. (Maybe outside of the allowed location) She managed to escape and find refugee for a brief moment.But from that victory jingle it seems that she did not jump back to the ship with her coworkers. She ran and tried to get their attention until she fell into the water and Possibly drowned or dissolve. But from previous tapes. There something in the water... And its alive... We're getting deeper in to these tapes than I orginally thought and were going to the sea bottom of this.

At the end of the recording it took an unusual amount of time for the salmon run shift to finish, and it sounded like someone (maybe Kaia) acknowledged that, maybe saying "is it over" or "what's going on" before the victory fanfare started, which is highly suspicious. If Grizzco isn't involved directly (unlikely) then they clearly know what's in those waters. Maybe Kaia was a sacrifice of some kind? Or a test?

my current theory is that kaia knew something about grizzco that she shouldn’t have, so Mr Grizz sent someone or something (possibly a fuzzy octarian) to grab her and drown her/kidnap her. either that or a salmonoid got fed up with the inklings invading their territory and tried to drown her. her teammates tried to save her, but the thing dragging her in was so strong that all three of them couldn’t save her. regarding 2, i believe that he’s the one who ‘fell in the water’ from episode two. the way it’s phrased makes it seem like the ‘he’ likely committed suicide, and didn’t just fall in. given how scared 2 seems in this episode, i believe he committed suicide by jumping into the ocean to drown himself so grizzco would stop stalking his family and friends, and possibly because he blames himself for not being strong enough to save kaia. it’s also possible that 2 jumped into the water to try and find kaia, believing that she was alive. finally, i’m probably wrong, but i think warabi might be lying about not working at grizzco. the security footage we see is really blurry, but the shirt warabi is wearing looks like the Record Shop Look EP shirt from splatoon two, which is only available as a Grizzco reward. again, could be wrong. The shirt also somewhat resembles the Black Layered LS, the Fishing Vest and the Umibozu Home Jersey, but there seem to be some spots on the shirt that only really correlate with the Record Shop Look EP shirt. Am i thinking way too much about a couple of white pixels on a blurry image? probably.

So, I noticed something peculiar while watching this earlier. Basically, during the interview with Warabi, he says that he hasn't worked for Grizzco at all. However, you can clearly see in the image provided that he is wearing a shirt that is only obtainable as a reward from salmon run shifts (it is called "Record Shop Look EP" for anyone curious). Now this could just simply be an oversight made by jerm, but this could also mean that either Warabi lied about not working at Grizzco or (more likely) 2 gave the shirt to Warabi as a gift.

Watching these tapes has inspired me to make my own little Fanfiction story in the future (that or make it a Sfm series). So here's the premise I've come up with: Hedron is the newest Octoling kid in Splatsville, with no real dreams or aspirations. But the one thing he does desire, is to participate in the iconic sport known as Turf Wars. But he doesn't have a lot of money for weapons, gear, etc. So he signs up for a job as an Egg Harvester at Grizzco Industries, but only a month into his job, he is soon thrusted into a morbid situation. On one particular day, one of his co-workers, an Inkling girl, is pulled underwater, but when he and his crew tried to report it, they are told by their employer to be quiet and forget everything they saw. Hedron becomes highly suspicious of this incident, and so, he starts digging to find out why they were told this. But before he can find out, he is fired from the job. Sometime afterwards, the Great Zapfish goes missing, and Hedron stumbles into a place called Alterna, now along with the Squidbeak Splatoon, he must fight a new enemy while uncovering a secret plot, one that ties back to Grizzco Industries, and one that could destroy the entire world.

Well, that took nearly a week. Anyway, short one: lovely folume that reveals to us a key detail, the person in duress when being interrogated by Grizz co is 2. On the same token, the audio is from Kaia's last shift and confirms this was marooners bay. In his audio file names he also seems to have left a cry for help. Though I do not have the exact phrases on hand it sounds like he's in a situation that he wants to quit but can't. Much like someone being extorted by their employer. One thing that jumped out to me were the four phrases that flashed on screen. Particularly the phrase: I can't stop breathing. Why would someone not be able to stop breathing? It stands out as everything points to drowning but yet, Kaia is still alive. Also supported by the episode title: "[She] is tossed [by the waves], but does not sink". Lastly, i would like to draw attention to todays stinger. It mentions that even a fake sky would suffice and a voice can be heard over a PA? system. Along with the quote from earlier im starting to think that perhaps something is below the waves, far below. Dj d3dfish has been confirmed to be aware during sanitation. And im starting to think that perhaps Kamabo co is playing a role, but evidence for this is circumstancial at best, flimsy at worst. So im not calling it fact, but I have my suspicions.

I have a theory: Kaia managed to survive, but ended up in Alterna as a result (hence "Even a fake sky would suffice"). This theory gives us another reason on why Grizzco is possibly covering her disappearnce: if they manage to get a lead to where Kaia is, not only would they discover Alterna, but possibly discover Grizzco's rocket and the real reason on why he is collecting golden eggs. Hope this makes sense!!
