This delicate preludio is deceptively simple, yet surprisingly difficult to play. Not just because of the barrés and stretches, but above all because the slow succession of singular notes makes the slightest mistake stand out like a sore thumb. Speaking from experience (I produce a collection of sore thumbs each time I try to play it) I consider this quiet, reflective interpretation outstanding.

hdholl I learned this piece in college and you are very correct. Also my professor told me that this piece is in a flat key of C minor and that usually guitarist prefer sharp keys. Don't know if I remember correctly though it's been years. And yes, very much sore thumbs.

This piece is brutal on the left hand due to the long stretches and barres in a lot of measures. And these are not your typical three fret major barres, but ones in 4 frets that need to be held for extended periods with little time to rest your fingers. The musicality itself isn't that hard, nor is the RH arpeggio but it's the LH that needs to be as flexible and stretchable as an Olympic gymnast. Barrios pieces are really elegant and melodious but often bloody difficult to play.

Excelente interpretación. Una pieza de Mangoré llena de profunda melancolía. En la versión de Stover las digitación es terriblemente desgastante. Ducharme hace que la melodía no se pierda en ningún momento.

(1/2) It doesn't sound strange. It is a good point. One thing a lot of top players do is to practice without applying full pressure with the left hand so that the notes are just buzzing slightly and consistently. Then you just apply a little more pressure so that the buzz stops and then you've found the minimum pressure you need to play.

@craigalake I guess you have to consider the metric forces at play. The non harmonic tones happen on the 2nd beat which is weaker while the resolutions happen in the 3rd beat which is stronger. To have a more stable comfortable rubato the performer is trying clearly project the measure's framework and not only emphasizing the appogiaturas(which he does every once and then). With a convincing rubato he is able to conduct the harmonic tension of the harmonic progression more effectively.

Pavel Stiedl for one but almost nobody except for period instrument specialists. Accenting non harmonic tones was a given. I am amazed at the number of students at my university (studying classical music) that don't understand this. It is a simple expressive element that makes a huge difference.

(2/2) Also doing this sort of practice with scales whilst playing forte with the right hand can create independence between the left and right hand. A common technical problem is that when players play loud they also tense the left hand. This way of practicing can really free up the left hand.

@craigalake14 жыл бұрын
@dadavidvid You make a fair point, except that they are not on the 2nd and 3rd beat but the 2nd and 3rd quaver subdivision of the beat. Therefore you shouldn't think of that resolution as falling on a beat. However, even if it was on the 3rd beat, if you look at Carcassi's Etude 3 op. 60, which has very simular appogiaturas on the 2nd beat resolving to the 3rd, he clearly marks (on the original) to decrescendo from the 2nd to the 3rd beat.

@craigalake16 жыл бұрын
Beautifully played, however, and I'm sure I'll get hammered for saying this but, why do so many guitarists treat both notes of appogiaturas with equal weight? It sounds so beautiful when they are treated like a musical sigh by "leaning" on the dissonance and not hammering out the resolution.

@Curatica No, I think you miss understand. To deliberately get a precise level of buzz, evenly across every note, is extraordinarily difficult and requires great control of the left hand. And a tip, if you find this piece "thumb-breaking" then I would suggest you need to overhaul your left hand technique and/or posture. To quote Pepe Romero (I think): It is difficult to play the guitar badly, but easy to play well. In otherwords with good technique, difficult music is easy.

@craigalake16 жыл бұрын
Ducharme is fine indeed. However, the idea of tension and resolution in the use of nonharmonic tones is central to all western classical music. This didn't change in the romantic period. Anyway this is more neo-baroque anyway and has a lot of similarities with Bach preludes.

Jerome is a great player and no I didn't win the GFA (but I've won prizes in Tokyo and made finals in several others IGCs so I'm not a complete novice) but I think YOU miss the point. If a video is posted it is open to relevant, constructive criticism. Feel free to watch mine and criticise away. If we can't get onto a forum and debate the merits or otherwise of a performance what is the point? Or should I just switch my brain off and mindlessly concede that this is the greatest performance ever?

Il était certainement inutile d'en faire autant dans le romantisme exacerbé !!! La partition parle d'elle même. Écouter pour cela l'interprétation d'Alvaro Pierri.
