This show is the mark of when my life changed in a very big way. So many events conspired to bring me home, and the home is my heart. Its been one heck of a journey since. Jerry played such a major role in who I am, and for that I am eternally Grateful. Thank You Family :)

well.. might as well continue the story... 8 -14 -91. Left Eel River after the meteor shower, i think i spent the better part of the day looking for the strangers car I left my guitar and pack in before i swam the river.. the plan was to get down to Lake Tahoe and see the Festival at Squaw Valley. Had ten days to kill, during which time my poison ivy eventually disappeared. I think we camped at Shasta or some Rainbow holding camps we came across. I could check my old journals but i'm too lazy.. I remember two such camps, and a couple hot springs. I don't recall most of the hitching specifically though.. but eventually got Squaw parking lot late weds day night. Here's the problem. This show was sold out super hard. Zero chance to get a ticket. JGB, Bela Fleck, Jimmy Cliff, Neville Brothers, Tower Of Power and Garcia/Grisman acoustic. Everyone wanted to see Jerry play Ripple and NO WAY you are getting a ticket. The other problem was it was a gondola ride up the mountain to get in. Squaw valley is a ski hill similar to Whistler or Sunshine Valley, this ain't no blue mountain. Just to get to the bottom of the slopes you had to climb a mountain for a day, then you had to climb the slopes for a day. Many heads didn't have the balls to do it. It was a big gamble. If you got caught and put in the gondola it would be another two days to get back up. You'd miss the show. We left all our gear, and guitar in someones bus. I took a sleeping bag and Brian took his mexican blanket. Headed up the mountain for the night. The first days climb was deep in the tree line, huge boulders and pines, couldn't see far but that suited us fine, not likely to get caught. We just headed up and knew the mountain would get smaller eventually.. Slept in a crevasse too worried to make a fire or use flashlights. Didn't see a soul. Day two in the morning we hit the slopes. We could move faster but we were worried that we could be seen. Never did see anyone though. Slopes were massive and we just kept walking or crawling up under the chair lifts. Finding age old groundscores of things that skiers lost and had been under the snow for ages. Still didn't see another soul, but the hills were so big you could have hid an army. Hit the summit late at night. Cold as heck, and now that we were over the top of the mountain and faced the ski bowl down on the inside of the mountain...we were too scared to even talk. We couldn't tell how close we were to the possibility of security. We hid in bushes and planed to make the move down the bowl in the morning. Just a few more miles to go and the show was starting at 1pm. No turning back. Getting caught wasn't an option. We had been climbing for 48 hours. Sunrise. To afraid to stand up we hid in bushes till we had enough light to be sure of our footing. I have a perfect memory of that morning. I saw something move in a bush a few dozen yards away. It was a hippie. Just a short distance but we never saw him the night before. As the light came up, it became clear that behind every bush and tree, gully and ditch on that ski bowl, was a hiding hippie. Silent as mice all night long. To afraid to even talk to each other. Hundreds of folks spread out over a few miles of slopes. All thinking the same thing. Down below, a couple of miles was a line of white shirts , likely 50 or so. Security coming up the mountain. They knew we'd be there. Try crawling for two miles down a ski hill into a festival. Greatest game of capture the flag ever! The show was history. Bill Graham even gave out shirts saying "I climbed a mountain for two days to see Jerry". Climbed back up at night of Day one to sleep. Rinse and repeat day two. This story reads better with Garcia/Grisman's "Arabia" playing in the background. Greatest concert ever. And he played Ripple.

I was there both days. My friends and I were great by Bill Graham riding an Enduro or some sort of dirt bike. We rode the "eggs" to the top and stepping onto the mountain I remember thinking, "How strange to be here when there is no snow." The whole weekend was so surreal especially when Jerry's sheet music started to blow away. Why does he need sheet music I wondered and was then blown away myself by the music and the great relaxed atmosphere. Miss you so much Jerry.

Thanks for this! I was there. Rode up from Santa Cruz in a Vanagon with some fine people. Hiked up from the parking lot to the bowl both days. Skinny dipped in a mountain lake on the way. Wind was bad second day but the atmosphere was amazing. Hung out with a beautiful Labrador Retriever named Cassidy. Drove back to Santa Cruz and I went to my first day of college Monday morning still tripping a bit. Some of the best times of my life.

Totally YES! This was the day I kind of "discovered" Russian Lullaby, and Arabia. And their take on So What was mind blowing. Took me a while to even remember what song it was and how I knew if before, but that didn't matter. Just great music all day! Even with the wind trying to carry it away from my ears occasionally. The weird moments of silence made for a strange and interesting experience too.

Got to see and say hi to Jerry, being driven up the mountain by a friend who picked him up at the airport. Incredible 2 day show, one of the best weekends of my 38 years living in Tahoe. Many years later, got to meet David at the Bluegrass Festival behind Hard Rock Tahoe and Joe Craven at a Valhalla workshop, he even played my daughters violin. (Which she'll never get rid of now, even though we've upgraded to a better one)

The whole late summer 91 Dead / Jerry run was my favorite month of music. Jerry at the Eel and Squaw. Cal Expo and Shoreline. I did GDTS for the 8/18 show at shoreline and mentioned that it was my buddy's birthday on the envelope. They sent me front row center. Row BBB. Jerry was maybe 3 feet from me. It was quite intense.

Great shows. I remember having to ride the ski lift up the mountain over the exposed, jagged rocks 40 feet below. I damn near plotzed (don't dig heights)! The music was was sensatioal all around. Booker T & The MG's kicked ass, as did Jimmy Cliff. I also clearly remember severe wind gusts throughout and this video reveals just that. I vaguely recall Garcia's acoustic amp being blown off of its precarious perch. I'm talkin' WINDY! Thanks for the great video sync job with a board recording.

I remember spraying Bill Graham with a hose when he was riding his dirt bike around the lower lot while we were all brushing our teeth. My Buddy Steve (RIP) climbed to the top without a ticket to see, not Garcia or Grisman, but Tower of Power. The BGP goon at the top saw how sweaty and tired he was from the climb and gave him a wristband for the rest of the show. Aside from the wind noise it was an amazing weekend.

Had no tickets so me and two friends and a 6 month old malamute that would a year later become my dogs momma walked up that mountain to gain entry. Maybe halfway through the climb 2 of us made a bad choice and turned left instead of right and ended up on as steep of a face as you would ever want to climb free handed. I froze at a spot where I thought I could climb no higher so my more skilled friend climbed past me and I climbed up and over him to get me going again. That caused my friend to slide a good twenty feet down the cliff before he could gain a good hold again. He made it back to where I was above him and we found are way to the top for what was likely the best weekend of music of my life.

It was windy and cold...The night before...I think this was the Sunday show..but anyhow, I talked with Billy Graham and told him this was a pain in the ass to walk up the hill to see the show...in fact I think it was the Jerry Garcia Band the night before..the next day I saw Bill coming down the hill on a scooter in a sling...I just smiled at him and I think he was good with it. Never spoke with our beloved Bill Graham again after that>>>

spent the night crawling in and out and all over the Caltrans snowcats in the Caltrans yard marveling that I was virtually invisible. The stars were gorgeous... Funny and true...Remember the tables in the middle of the venue with the "plant bush" stickers???Just checkin

I never caught any David/Jerry shows unfortunately. Although 1991 was about the apex of my going to Dead shows. This is a very nice video.

I was at this concert and the real highlight was the finale when The Neville Brothers played. Due to heavy winds Jerry and David, who were supposed to close the show, played a beautiful set, but the winds made it difficult to hear in the further reaches of the field high atop Squaw Valley. Many dedicated Dead fans parted after the set and magically the winds died, the skies opened a full yellow moon shone bright. The Nevilles played many songs off their Yellow Moon album to the delight of the faithful, who got to move up closer to the stage to immerse into the magic in the air that night. Charles Nevilles Saxophone floated about the valley like a musical snake with wings. Sure Jerry and David were OK with that outcome. Anyone know if any footage of Nevilles out there?
