For all its considerable flaws, I thoroughly enjoy this film. The very best part of it, of course, is this intense and marvelously Gothic score by the great Jerry Goldsmith. It's goosebump stuff, evocative and exciting. I love it!

The Shadow was the main inspiration behind Batman. If you think about it, there are many parallels, particularly with his alter ego Lamont Cranston - he's practically Bruce Wayne. The comic book was also one of the first comics to showcase the darker and grittier side to superheroes, something that's much more popular nowadays. In many ways, The Shadow was way ahead of its time - great superhero!
@FlyingTiger209910 жыл бұрын
One of the Shadow's identities is KENT Allard, and of course the Superman to The Shadow's Batman is CLARK Savage Jr, the Man of Bronze... Who had a Fortress of Solitude. The Shadow fought INTERnational CRIME. And so on. For DC to be so pissy now about its brands when they have shall we say borrowed freely from better sources is a Disney-esque abomination.

Excellent compilation. I come back to listen to it again every now and then. The Shadow is my favorite soundtrack of all time and I've been listening to (and occasionally creating) soundtracks since the eighties. It has pieces I remember from the movie but that are not included in the soundtrack's CD release (at least not the one I have).

I think The Shadow would be a good subject for a stealth-action video game in the same vein as Deus Ex or Thief II: The Metal Age. I love 1930s hard-boiled detective novels and film noir, and I sometimes wonder why video game developers have used that period as a setting for games much. Cyberpunk and steampunk are great, but I think they're getting a bit worn out.
@persiusshelly66358 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as it is a gaming masterpiece in the vein of Thief III Deadly Shadows, Deus Ex Human Revolution/Mankind Divided, and LA. Noire instead of a comic book to game flop like so many that have been made.

I would love to see Robert Eggers do a film about The Shadow. He is only interested in period pieces, but the film could be set during the 30's. Either that or Sam Raimi finally get a chance to make the film he's always wanted, it's why he did the film Darkman. He couldn't get the rights to The Shadow, which is his favorite character.

The main inspiration for Batman was Judex. Like Batman, he was a millionaire who lived in a big mansion. He had a big cave under the mansion, where he kept his costumes, cars and equipment. He had a hidden cave from which he drove his big black car at night to fight evil. He dressed as a big bat. Bob Kane always said that Judex became Batman.
@Ryan_Thompson_Guitarist5 жыл бұрын
Judex was the inspiration for the Shadow. Bob Kane and Bill Finger stated that The Shadow was the inspiration for Batman, which is obvious from the first few Batman stories

I may be completely nuts here, and I apologize if I upset any hard core batman fans, but I always pictured this theme being part of the original batman movie themes.
@43nostromo8 жыл бұрын
The studios will often direct the composers to create themes similar to other films of the same genre. Goldsmith was likely given that order and then made something similar---only he made it much more interesting. Kind of like Mozart taking Salieri's boring music and making something much much better. "Oh, grazi, Signore!"

Yes, for me it was the casting, especially of the main villain. no offense to the talented John Lone, but the reincarnation of Genghis Khan he is not! Still love this movie, however. Alec Baldwin is, as they used to say, a movie star. Nice work by Ian McKellan, too.

Alec Baldwin did his level best and the film looks gorgeous, but the script is too deliberately juvenile in places (and too cutsey nostalgic) and it falls between it's mixed objectives as a piece of entertainment. Great cast and there's some good dialogue, but it doesn't come together. Goldsmith's score was a welcome return to larger, more elaborate scoring.

This film is such a frustrating mixture of the superb (visuals, soundtrack) and the really lame (humour, some of the casting, dialogue). One of Goldsmith's best soundtracks, which is saying a LOT. Visually stunning too. But Tim Curry is hopelessly miscast and over-the-top, the story is high camp (degenerating into farce), and the dialogue is often puerile. What a pity.
