Jerry West deserves Winning Time a fact check based on the way HBO's Winning Time The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty depicts him. The Lakers' legend is shown as a tormented, angry man and the real Jerry West has threatened to sue. View The Right Thing fact checks the show to see if HBO is slandering a literal icon or if Jerry West was wilder than he remembers.

Hopefully it looked like I had fun making this one because I did. Jerry is a 🐐. Which sports icon do you think that I should Fact check? Let me know 👇🏾 in the comments and 🙏🏾 for watching.

It's insanely ironic how much EVERYONE loves this portrayal of him except for him... which is exactly how the portrayal of him would react. I wasn't sure if they did him justice until I saw his reaction. I've never loved him more.

The first time I learned about issues with Jerry West is that during their title runs from 2000 to 2002, Jerry West said he had severe stress watching these playoff games. I also read that after winning the 1972 NBA Title, Jerry West felt very "empty" after it took over a decade to finally win a title as a player. I was not surprised with how he is portrayed in this docudrama. Thank you for posting such a detailed video on other factual information about West from his own auto biography.

Yeah, Jerry didn't really address his mental health issues until later in life but says that he's happier for the journey.

good analysis ... I was sympathetic to his portrayal ... he is not a bully or a predator. he is just a man who can only cope with stress through rage and he loses his composure

The one thing on the show that seemed out of left field was when they suggested he was drunk on the job. I’d never heard that before, and I could see him finding that defamatory if it’s not true.

From 2023. The showtime series is still a interesting drama/ doc. The players gave all these tell all books in the early 2000’s but now their grandkids and a new generation are learning about them. They are trying to whitewash it.

This is exactly it. Jerry was intense and tormented, but also a basketball savant in management role. He didn't come into rooms swearing and ranting. He was like EF Hutton, when he spoke ppl listened. You can't respect the cartoon Jerry of Winning Time, but all his players and co-workers did respect him. He is the basketball genius who built the Showtime Lakers.

The thing is Jerry West hates losing at all costs and will do anything to win and make it happen. Imagine losing to the Celtics as a player all the time getting right to the mountain top and falling off each time as the Celtics knock you off. Then the Knicks do it in 1970. Then when you FINALLY FINALLY win it all in 1972, you are emotionally and physically drained that you can't enjoy the win. That's what is woven in his DNA now is win at all costs. That's why he did everything to get Magic did everything humanely possible for the team to beat the Celtics in 1985 after losing in 1984. Why it eventually took everything out of him. I am just shocked that the stress and anger he has held didn't cause an aneurysm, stroke, or heart attack in those years. He's 84 and still going.

West was definitely an intense person, derived from his days as a player, he could melt lead. But he was brilliant. He knew how to find talent and build teams. That said though, it took Bill Sharman to rein him in and channel his energy right, first as coach, then as GM, later president (with West as GM).

It's interesting you mention Bill Plaschke at 2:15 - his LAT column on 4/22 basically bashed the series for its portrayal of West. He even quoted Steve Springer, who co-wrote the book the series is based off, who said the portrayal of West was "stupid and dumb."

No one would have ever attained and held the jobs he has throughout his life if he was Alcohol- raged-fueled-abusive-emotional-cripple that he is portrayed in Winning Time. West comes off as almost the stereotypical abusive stepfather trope then a man haunted by his defeats and wonders if any or all the criticism from his detractors claimed were right (see Herb Brooks portrayal in Miracle [2004] or Billy Beane in Money Ball [2011] for that type of character). The Jerry West they portray is a barely functional human being who I wouldn't trust to make a damn sandwich let alone be a GM or member of a Pro-team Lockerroom.

@@ViewTheRightThing LMAO. I believe that there is no definitive GOAT, not even Jordan. When however one talks of a GOAT killer instinct has to be part of the conversation. I'd argue that no NBA player has been gifted with more natural athletic prowess than LeBron. By the same token he is more bereft of killer instinct than any other great player. Put a little West or Kobe into LeBron and he would dominate until age 60. Instead he is basically headed for his final couple of seasons, doing a lot of whining, a lot of trash talk and very little winning.

I don't think Jerry West was like that in public. But he damn sure was angry on the inside. I get that. West was a competitor of the highest order. When I view that series, i feel like they're just channelling the inner Jerry West. Also, Jerry West was a guaranteed Bucket.

I don't think any of us can imagine what it must have been like to compete at that level... and to lose... (in the finals)... year after year, after tear... to the same team, while also being the best player on the floor. Most people wouldn't be able to manage that. I know I would've ended up in jail... at least! So I believe West dealt with it very well. If anything, I like him even more now!

They have portrayed him like some kind of cartoons childish on cocaine with zero autocontrol. I mean, it's funny to watch and I understand it's for dramatic purposes about being competitive to the extreme and all that, but I understand too that to hime or his family can be very unrespectull.
