I recently retired. Loving every minute. My job had gotten to the point where people didn’t really talk to each other that much-morale was horrible-so the social aspect was almost nothing. The job was so stressful in general that I would be tied up in knots and frustrated pretty much all day long. The way I looked at it was that for every year I worked, the job was taking two years off my life. So I’m finally free. And loving every minute of it! :-) :-) :-)

I felt the same way. I retired almost 4 years ago; I intended to wait another 9 mos. for my 65th birthday. However, conditions were so stressful that I.left earlier. I am so happy that I'm out of there. It hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows but the pros outweighed the cons.

You got that right, Ginny! A positive attitude is key to happiness, at any age. Though due to the challenges we can experience as we age, it is harder to keep a positive outlook. So enjoyed you guest today. I retired at 62,as a Landscaper Designer. My husband is still working, as a pilot examiner. We have traveled all over, cruising, just enjoying life. Then in 2016 our life changed, when we became guardians of our great granddaughter. It is now time for our son and DIL, to take over. We are now 81 & almost 80. My husband had surgery in April, & thought he was done flying. But the Dr. gave him the ok to return to work. It’s been hard on our family, because of our granddaughter, being on drugs - but because of our God, We have survived! Love your videos! 👍🏻🙏🏻

We are retired and very healthy, right now, living in South Florida now, for 5 years. But, 66 and 74 now. The reason we want to check out the Villages is the many AMENITIES this place seems to offer. And, the opportunities to make some friends. It seems that in the Villages that if you lose your spouse, (God forbid, but unfortunately will happen) you won’t be so lonely, as you would be living elsewhere, even in beautiful S. Florida.

Hi Tracy, Frances has a good point about being near family or friends to help you when you get sick, as well as having healthcare services nearby. I don't know where you are or what is near you. But living on a farm can be remote and risky as we age. While The Villages is wonderful, there are other options. Sometimes, we just have to do what we have to do. Hi Zelma, you are right. My pointers apply to any and all retirees. We need to keep our mind and body active to better enjoy our golden years. Senior Centers are a wonderful opportunity to stay engaged. I recently coached a woman from Rhode Island. She is a soloager and had been fairly isolated for the past six years. She loved to read all day on her couch. While reading is a wonderful, healthy activity, she wanted more in her life. After we chatted and discovered her interests, skills, and desires, she now goes to her local Senior Center where she created a quilting club. She is enjoying her golden years. Our environment and history shape many of our responses. There is science behind happiness that shows some people are born happier than others. Being happy may be harder for some people, but we do have a choice to try to be happy.

We used Cheryl Richardson's Take Time for Your Life book prior to retiring to think about and talk about what we wanted to do/be in retirement. It was fun to dream, scheme and plan using the book’s lists and quizzes.

Yesterday I nearly succumbed to heat exhaustion outside. Now I find the Cleveland Clinic tells those over 65 to limit outdoor exposure. How can The Villagers function with the heat? What is your daily structure from 8 months of the year with temperatures in the 90s? Stay inside? I have skills I purposefully gave up upon retirement.
@JERRYANDLINDA2 жыл бұрын
I had the same concerns Eric. You know those published temperatures are accurate, but they show the hottest time of day. That does not last all day, for example like April and May or September & October. We actually like the weather here. Every place indoors is air conditioned and outdoors when you're in your cart you can have the window down and a nice breeze the entire time you're rolling. Direct exposure to the sun can be very hot. Standing on concrete in midday, or even on a golf course green you can feel the heat radiating. Even on the hottest days many of the evenings are so nice. Just beautiful. We have learned to adjust pretty well. We still watch a lot of TV midday in the summer. Those are good times to work on your crafts. Maybe take up whittling or play an instrument, whatever.

@@JERRYANDLINDA I became a champion snacker while sitting inside. My pantry WAS always full of junk food. Seeing the results of that, I’m now trying cut back on those skills. 😂 Always enjoy your videos. Thanks!

Hi Grandpa Eric, Yes. The heat can be tough. Be careful up there. I always said to myself, I could never live in Florida because of the heat and humidity. I always struggled with them during Pittsburgh summers. However when I moved here, I was surprised at how the heat doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. There are continuous breezes and AC. The body cools down quicker than it heats up. The cold doesn't go through my bones anymore, and I can go outside year round in shorts. Outdoor activities are enjoyed in the morning or evening. I don't have to drive or tredge around in the cold, snow, and ice. There are more positives with the tradeoffs. But I will say, there is something to be said for crisp fall air and a white Christmas.

Some people need encouragement and are afraid because they might not have the confidence to do things and they may not know many people. Get a list of new comers, call them and see if they need help getting started. It could be a club someone could start and it would be free. You may already have a club like that. Or, at the dances, make an announcement for people to sign up.

I really enjoyed today’s guest! Please be careful if you try Virtual Reality it can be quite disorienting making it very easy to fall. I would suggest having someone standing by to catch you or just use a chair. At least until you know what your getting into. My first time my family had me virtually going up in an elevator open the door and step out. Simple enough however when the doors opened I was on the top of a skyscraper building and needed to step out into thin air. It’s really bizarre how it messes with your brain I knew I was safe in my living room and just needed to step forward but I just couldn’t. I’m not even afraid of heights! I was definitely afraid of falling!

I think it's sad when a person has no interests in life and all they know is work. I retired at 58 ( and now I'm 75) and have been so busy I don't know how I ever had time to work. Lots of what I do is work. I just don't get paid for it. I've bought several houses and redone them and done much of the work myself. Which I love doing. It's physically harder than the work I did when working but I love it. I guess I do get paid for it but not as a salary. Eventually when I sell the house I get paid. I'm not flipping. Just doing it for.myself. The older I get, the busier I get. And I don't do any of those things people do just to take up time.

WOW! You are amazing and such an inspiration, Hilda. When we find "work" we love, we really aren't "working". We are simply enjoying what we are doing. Enjoyment brings fulfillment. Fulfillment brings happiness. Keep enjoying.
