Your obscure references are the best. This weeks, Phyllis Diller. As luck would have it I have a Phyllis Diller story. 1984, while on liberty (USMC) in Hollywood, walking up Hollywood Boulevard, limo pulls up, back window rolls down, people arguing in back seat area, Phyllis Diller leans out, far out arm extended with a bottle of something, she loudly says, "Here, giving this away, take it!" My buddy grabs the bottle, she returns to arguing, window rolls up as limo drives off. She gave us an almost full bottle of Jim Beam. We don't know why. Man - I wish we had kept that bottle.

When it comes to catching snakes, ESPECIALLY if they are in your home, the easiest and best thing to use is one of those Gopher grabber tools, grab it by the head with that, it stays 3-4 feet away from you, and you can drag it and put it where you need to go.

My roof was eleven years old and Ida came through and severely damaged it. We were very lucky to find a reasonable roofer, who did a great job. Our home is about 2700 square feet and the roof cost was $10,000. This is not the usual case, so many people in Louisiana are getting scammed after this storm. We still see blue tarps everywhere. I have a friend who gave the roofers half of the money, they did a little work and left. It's really a shame.

Hello Jerry and Linda. I love Mailbag Monday. You each bring such good information. I'd like to pass along for people to do a Lifestyle Visit before they purchase a home in the Villages because once they buy they can no longer do the same type of visit. I'm in New York and bought a home I saw online on the Villages website figuring I could come later for a Lifestyle visit. Well now I'm ready to come for my visit and was told because I own a home there I cannot do a Lifestyle visit even though I've never used my home and am not familiar with the Villages. So I need to pass along to go for a visit before buying because once you buy that's it as far as a Lifestyle visit. Thank you so much for your Mailbag Mondays. I guess this is how I'm going to get most of my information about life in the Villages before I move down.

Hi guys, last year I had my roof replaced at a cost of approximately $480 per square (100 sq ft).That was for architectural grade shingles. We just purchased a home outside of Tampa last week. Original roof on a 22 year old home. We DID get insurance despite the age of the roof. There was no way we could afford a new roof with all the $$$ it was costing to purchase the home. You have to shop around and understand that there are 3 things the insurer looks at: age of roof, age of hot water heater and age of HVAC. Becuase the hot water heater and HVAC were new (1 year and 3 years, respectively), they approved our policy. Yes, you will pay a tad more for the insurance but it will go DOWN once the roof is replaced. Regarding cost: 2650 square feet with new hurricane clips (now required; they weren't during a specific time of home building so our house doesn't have them).....$34,000. That was the average of 5 estimates. We have a year to relace it and no doubt the cost will go UP by the time we do it. Last, do NOT invest in any roofing material that is "top of the line" or a long warranty as it's a waste of money. ALso, you'll have to remove your solar panels (if you have them) every time the roof comes off and check into THAT cost for removal and re-installment. HTH some. :)
@JERRYANDLINDA2 жыл бұрын
Excellent information! Thank you very much. The cost of that roof is a real eye opener, isn't it?

@@JERRYANDLINDA I'd recommend getting at least 3 roofing estimates before deciding on a roofing company. I got a new roof on my house in FL panhandle in December, and the bill for the Owens Corning architectural shingles with installation ran $11,700 for my house of 2,120 square feet with attached garage. Unfortunately, I also needed lots of rotten wood replaced under it, so that ran up the total bill a lot over the cost of shingles. (And I also got a letter from State Farm about having to replace my roof or have my insurance not renew, but I had planned to do it anyway.) Total cost for me ended up at about $16,500.
@lighten8512 жыл бұрын
What’s the mean gain of the solar panels if your in time of needing to replace your roof and it costs 5,000$ in maintenance-on and off roof- for the panels? We are northern Illinois homeowners with 2500 sq foot 2 story home ( w full basement) Gambrel style cedar shake roof; which we have maintained- cleaned stained,replaced worn with new shakes. They are stated to last 32-50 years and we are on the 35 year and if need be will replace with non-wood shingles. Anyone out there in similar situation? As long as you summarize the question in the beginning prior to start of answers I’m fine not seeing the questions on the screen. On another note, be great to focus on the topic of roof replacement I’m sure a show in itself on home ownership replacements and general maintenance on homes in FL due to weather would be a great show since many of us Northerns are new to the climate and how damaging it can be. Also, perhaps segment between contractor, insurance company & Villagers who had to replace their roof would make interesting piece. Not all retirement communities are created equal. Something you may want to share with your viewers who might be afraid to move to the Villages because they don’t know anyone in Florida. My wife and I retired from Massachusetts to a North Texas retirement community. We moved there not knowing a single soul in Texas. As much as it was a challenge it was the greatest experience in our 40+ years of marriage. We found the key to our great quality of life there was the diversity of our neighbors who many became our friends. Like Florida, North Texas is made up of many transplants from all over the USA and people who are on their own usually need other people. We made more friends in the 2+ years in Texas than we made in our whole married life in Massachusetts. Due to circumstances (story is too long to get into) we ended leaving Texas for Pennsylvania. Same story as Texas as we moved into a retirement community not knowing a single soul in Pennsylvania. We have been here going on 4 years now, and have made very few friends - sometimes we feel as though we’re intruders. 99% of the population who live in our retirement community have lived in this part of Pennsylvania all their lives. When we watch your vlogs it sometimes reminds us of being the happy newcomers ourselves when we had moved to Texas. Bottom line… to move away from home if it’s somewhere like the Villages or any retirement community where the people have moved in from everywhere, just might be the best decision of your life. Wishing you all the best, John from Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Installing a regular plastic/wood doggie door in the passage door or wall between the garage and the living area does violate fire code. Fire rated doggie doors are available for that application. Also any type of ceiling or wall mounted ventilation fan that removes hot air from the garage and puts it in the attic must also be fire rated. And the reason replacing the roof shingles etc., is expensive in FL is because of Florida's wind code. The wind code is part of Florida's building code and is designed to make homes stronger and more resistant to the damaging winds from hurricanes and other storms. The wind code requires a permit for roofing replacement, installation by a licensed roofing contractor, inspections and the use of approved products, fasteners and shingles wind rated for the county you live in. All of that adds up cost wise, but the net result is fewer loses from roof damage and water intrusion.

I seen your short video on the landfill but I was curious if you planned on doing a more informative video if there are odors that occasionally blow across the neighborhoods that are nearby? Especially during the heat of the summer when all that yard vegetation is cooking in the sun. I would also be curious to know about noise and dust coming from the processing plant and trucks at the quarry now that The Villages are expanding further south. In addition, the noise from the federal prison in regards to daily activity, like outside speaker/intercom announcements, bells/tones? Thank you and keep the information coming!

Hi guys. I know of at least one post office inside the Villages. It’s where our mailbox station is and it has a small office for pretty much all USPS services. Accessible by golf cart and located in the Silver Lake area at: 4 Lagrande Blvd, Lady Lake, FL 32159. Saludos from up north here in Silver Lake !!! 😃📫

Feeling left out! You guys mentioned a lot of villages down south but totally forgot Cason Hammock! It's a sweet little village surrounded by the Southern Oaks Championship golf course.

Also you may need permission from the town/county if you want to build outward, like a lanai, extra room or golf cart garage. Orange Blossom and Glenview CCs have a hot tube both are priority. I have a friend who was golfing and some lady asked him out of the blue to remove a snake skin from her yard, she was afraid of the skin! I found a complete 5' skin and brought it to our driveway party for show and tell. The roofing issue is scary so don't buy a 30 year roof buy the cheapest. I would accept an inspection every 10 years or so instead, that seems fair. My neighbor just bought a house and the insurance company wouldn't insure because her HOT WATER HEATER was old!!! It was working fine and was 20 years old! What will be next? Congrats on the whole in one YAY! I am happy if I get a par!

It would be a shame if you bought one of those custom metal roofs that last 50 years and they made you get rid of it after 10 year. There are some metal roofs up in the Spanish Springs area.

They feel like TV stars to me in California too. The way TV use to be in the 70s or 80s, value added, relaxing and entertaining. Not like todays TV, shocking and so called “reality” based. 😁

New builds, you need to be 55+. For preowned you don’t as long as the ratio is met.
