It's super hard to master a different language. They say to master something it takes 500 hours of practice, which is approximately 21 straight days. You would have to dedicate 16 hours a day to it at the minimum

I will be 71 in 3 weeks. I recently started studying German. I’m a native English speaker as well as an intermediate French speaker. You are so CORRECT! If you don’t love it, you will struggle and struggle. I spoke to myself so much in French that I often have a conversation in my head in French and I have also dreamed in French. I’m too old to make much practical use of anything in my sphere of influence but I do run across opportunities. I was very shy, or anxious is a better word for it, to just join in and start a chat when I was younger and self concise. Now I DON”T CARE if I make a fool of myself because it’s FUN! And that my friends is what keeps me going. I plan on adding other languages to my repertoire. Thanks for your candid video.

I am Mexican-American, fluent in both languages, and I have been an ESL teacher for half of my life, passionate about teaching people to speak English for their careers or personal interest. Not so long ago, I convinced myself to start teaching Spanish on the side. It hasn't been easy. I guess what I am trying to say is that after watching your video and listening to you talk about your heartfelt experience as a Spanish student, you reminded me of why I love what I do. Thinking back on the 20+ years as an ESL teacher, I have only met one person with the genuine self-motivation to learn English driven by the love for the language and the cultures like you. I feel that I should have met more people with your enthusiasm for learning a new language. I admire and congratulate you on your success in achieving your dream. I too would like to add that in school we are told that it is a required class, so no one really takes it seriously because it was a genuine selection. As an African American woman, I would say at least from my demographic, you would almost have to sell it to us on why it would be beneficial. Not sure of the age you teach, but middle and up, you can tell them the benefits of the career opportunities and such. Now in my 30s, I am trying to learn it. You can also touch on changing the narrative for our demographic by saying that “you too can be bilingual.” Interactive games of conversation and role play with props may help. Make it fun! I wanted to learn in school but they made it so boring it was like whatever. A lot of students would skip the class and still pass. I was an honor roll student btw. Many teachers don’t have their heart in it so I salute to you and hope things get better.

I've been working on my Spanish off and on for some time now because I wanted to retire to a Spanish speaking country. Well I'm here now, living in Argentina and still struggling. I'm amazed on how overwhelmed and lazy my brain can become; I want to learn it so badly I can taste it. I've heard the older you are the more difficult it is to learn a new language, but I don't believe that. If you really want something you must commit yourself. I agree with you-I don’t buy the antics of “too old to learn a language” either. You’ve got this 🙏🏽 If you’re in Argentina long-term, that’s a golden opportunity. Why don’t you try the no-English language pledge that I did in Spain? It’ll be hard for a few weeks/early months, but it’s unbelievably cool when you see your brain finally start to “get it”. @@JerryRegistre I think it was Lev Vytgotsky who researched self-talk. If you watch a young child playing, they tend to mumble to themselves.. narrating their pretend play. They’ll practice new vocabulary and phrases this way

Keep at it, you’ll both get better over time. I am living the same scenario. My wife is from Mexico and my native language is English. She spoke very basic English when we met, and my Spanish was mediocre at best. Fast forward 17 years….I’m still not fluent but more functional and her English, while not perfect is much better…though she still struggles with some words (like world vs word)… Both of our kids are fluent in Spanish because my wife has always primarily used Spanish with them at home.

Excellent summary of the keys to becoming fluent in a second language. What I like most is that, unlike many language instructors on KZbin, Jerry doesn't ditch studying grammar in favor of just learning phrases and being immersed in the new language. Grammar, syntax, vocabulary...these alone don't get you anywhere close to fluent, but they do provide a solid foundation for understanding those phrases and participating in conversations with confidence.

I started learning my second language in 2019, and I'm now fluent in that language and am getting close to an advanced level. I plan to start learning Spanish in July as my third language. I intend to travel to South America at the end of 2024, so I want to learn enough Spanish over 18 months to be able to have some meaningful conversations with native Spanish speakers. I’m Afrohispanic and my family stopped speaking Spanish after my grandmother died. But , 3 out of 5 of my kids speak Spanish fluently. I remember some of it but it’s hard to relearn it than to start from zero. My girlfriend speaks fluently but I find it hard to learn from her. That's great to hear keep it up! If I could offer a quick suggestion the term "Hispanic" refers to a person that speaks Spanish regardless of race. This is why someone from Equatorial Guinea (African Country) and Spain can both say they're Hispanic. Maybe "Afro-Latino" is a better term? Latino implies someone with Iberian (Spain-Portugal), Mezo-American (Pre-Colonial), and African roots. A person from Brazil can identify as "Latino" but not "Hispanic." The “30 day” type of videos almost pushed me to quit when I was younger, so I vowed to flip the script and be real if I made it to where I am now. B2/C1 is also sweet spot! Advanced enough to enjoy using your Spanish with others, and a strong enough foundation that you feel ready to pour vocab, idioms, and the little nuances of the language on top of what you know to shoot from advanced to near native. Took years of spanish in middle and high school, very little stayed with me. Took again in my 40s in college and finally made some progress that stuck, but still not enough to be *fully* conversational. That's even after taking all the levels my college offered before straight teaching entire subjects like history solely in Spanish. The things that did stick came from practice w/ correction/feedback and spandict as you mentioned. Also, listening to spanish radio (I live in TX) and reading spanish newspapers and looking up parts of sentences I didn't understand. I can read now better than I can "hear" or speak because I can slow it down in my head. But I'm going to use your resources to continue my journey. I had mostly given up on getting much better since I don't have anyone to converse with in Spanish very often. Saw your other video and I'm already in awe using ChatGPT with voice to practice. Mind blowing. I may yet get this life goal of full conversational fluency leveled up. Thank you!

YOU’VE GOT THIS! I mentioned how frustrated I got when I had gone through all the school classes and still felt like I couldn’t hold a conversation. But that period of intensive Spanish where I spoke everyday for 6 months in Spain really locked it in for me, and I finally started considering myself a Spanish teacher. And now tech like ChatGPT and VR make it possible to practice speaking every day right at home. I’ll keep finding ways to combine tech to make conversation practice easier (I may build a platform if I don’t find what I’m looking for). But I’m so sure you’re going to nail this. This was really helpful, Jerry. Gracias! I am 56 and moved to Mexico in 2023 in part to (finally) learn my mother's language. I thought I would pick it up so easily but it's been quite a struggle. My older brain struggles to absorb the vocabulary and the town I live in is very touristy and it's easy to get away with English here. My goal is to be able to sit down and have a conversation en español con mis primos un día. Thank you for the content, and the very realistic portrayal of the difficulty of learning a language.

Wow! Congratulations on learning Spanish. I'm a Latina who is bilingual and can read and write in Spanish. And it's easier (in my opinion) to learn a 3rd language once you're bilingual. By God's grace, I have learned French, Italian and German. But what I have learned from you are your tools to learn another language. I'm going to use them to help me keep up with my other languages. Most recently a new co worker, a Latina from Peru also speaks French, Italian, Spanish and English fluently so I get to practice. Thank you for the encouraging video. You're doing an excellent job! P.S. my husband is black and was raised in Cali and most of his friends and neighbors were Hispanic so we grew up listening to Spanish and he can understand me when I speak in Spanish. Lol 😅

One suggestion I would add to Jerry 'totally on target' video here, .... do NOT practice a lot of singular words & definitions by themselves in the beginning--I made this mistake and after a couple years I had a huge vocabulary of thousands of words but little ability to string them together to form sentences. Pick a couple topics, write out as many English sentences, questions, and comments as you can think of in those topics (maybe related to your job, something you do in your personal life as a hobby, etc) and then write out responses you might get to those statements and questions. Translate those sentences, questions, comments, and responses to Spanish, then everyday study one of those all day long as you go through your day, each day go to the next one, then on a day you can designate an hour or two, review the statements, questions, comments, and/or responses that you practiced up that point. You will become near fluents (seemingly) in that one, or two topics/areas. Then go to another topic/area. This way you can use what you've learned MUCH quicker than I did....Took me over a couple years...mucha suerte y que dios te bendiga!!

i am a Turk and i am fascinated by this language as well. actually i am fascinated nearly all of the latin languages out there. English, my 2nd language, took me around 7 years to get fluent. i am TRYING to learn Spanish like for 4 months. i hope these tools will help me learn. great video cheers. I am 65 yrs old. I took 2 yrs of Spanish in high school in the last century😉. I always wanted to be more fluent with Spanish. As time went on, I read a little, bought workbooks, but I never progressed. In the mid 90’s, I took a leap of faith & joined a Spanish congregation in my faith. The best advice I received was to understand that you are a toddler learning to speak for the first time. Another thing was to understand that being corrected did not mean being criticized. I’m not where I want to be, but I’m further than I was. I took a trip to Mexico with friends who had traveled there many times. They were so surprised at how comfortable I was there. I had surgery a few yrs ago. When I awakened from anesthesia, I was speaking in Spanish!! The nurse looked at me like I had grown a second head. I knew I was speaking in Spanish , but I couldn’t make myself speak English. It took a while for me to make my brain behave. Like you I have a play list of Spanish songs. I need to widen out with more artists.I’m looking forward to improving & not needing google translate.

Hey sup, I feel you totally man , right now i speak 4 languages with varying levels of fluency but all of them boiled down to immersion. The first foreign language i really had an interest in was Persian and trust me starting was easy but trying to get better at it is so much harder . I can hold conversations and stuff but people can often tell that I'm not a persian native.

I’ve been learning Spanish for 10 months now and am comfortable and conversational in public, but am hitting that wall where I need to organize my learning structure to advance. The absolute passion and deep desire to learn, you mentioned in this video is what fuels me. One of the biggest things that helps me is the self talk (ALL DAY!) just like a toddler or baby does and translate everything!! And journaling is so so so helpful. Step 1: Create a Time Machine to go back to middle school. Lol no seriously you intensely studied Spanish for approximately 10 years and still couldn’t speak it. But like you said, you didn’t speak in that language much. So I think the biggest takeaway is to learn to speak Spanish you have to ACTUALLY speak Spanish. Thanks for mentioning those resources. Amazing video! I can attest to your method of learning Spanish. I did many of the same things - starting at age 50 - and now I speak Spain Spanish at a C1 level. It has been LIFE-CHANGING. I think the ”why” behind everything is probably the most important thing, because without it, you’ll likely give up when the going gets tough. Where you’ve gotten it right and where I need more help is full immersion. Though I now spend much of my time in a Spanish-speaking country, I work remotely in English 100% of the time and that can impede my Spanish advancement. Your native language absolutely can slow down your language learning if you’re not careful. I wish I could immerse myself as much as you do with Spanish content. Like you said full days of Spanish (when I’ve had them) have left me with a big headache by the end of the day. But poco a poco. Hey man, how are you doing? Your journey is fascinating. I’m Haitian. My love for Spanish hasn’t stopped growing. I moved to the states 8 months ago, and my encounter with Latinos has increased my love for the language and the culture. The problem is, I have no experience whatsoever. I don’t where and how to start. I don’t know what materials I need to start. I have some savings, I’m ready to make the jump and invest in this quest. Did you get a lot of weird vocab which you’d never seen before in your test? I find the vocab part extremely challenging as they tend to include the words which even natives are struggling to define correctly if they are not given a context.

Start with the basics! StudySpanish.com for grammar, EasySpanish for comprehensible input, and repeating basic phrases. As you get better, try simple conversations with AI. You've got this 🙌🏽
