My first phone was a Moto F3c with e-ink segmented display with 2 rows for text with 6 characters on the top row and 7 characters on the bottom row. To make a smartphone less addicting, removing social media applications goes a long way. No need to compromise on the display for the rest of the functions.

I really love the idea but I don't think I would enjoy losing color on my smartphone. I love the benefits of E-ink, I only wish that color could be applied somehow. Once that is accomplished I would probably switch over. Awesome review!

Hisense’s A series offers models with color e-ink screens, typically known as the A5/A7/A9 CC. However, aside from the clarity being considered 10 times less than the non-CC models (a necessary trade-off, as you need to divide the total number of available pixels on the screen by three to accommodate the tri-color filters), the colors are also quite dull, resembling the pseudo-color screens of the last century.

If inc display could be put on top of regular one so that it could be used when you don't need anything fancy would be great addition

Or the other way around. A transparent display on top of an e-ink display would be excellent.

I use an e-ink Android device minus the cellular transmitter as a journal / note-taking device - I love it.

I remember some years ago there was a normal phone that had e-ink on the back. The idea was that you could display info on there all the time without using any power like a map or shopping list.

I would absolutely love to have e-Ink smartphone, but what hurts it the most is not the screen, its the UI. As long as the UI is centered around swipe, drag and scroll, it will be a disaster to use with any e-Ink display. If, however, they'd manage to rework the interface and make interactions less dependent on gestures and more of a page-to-page experience, that would be a completely different story.

The fact you can read the screen while it’s in chards is so impressive.

An e-ink smartphone would be just the right thing for my ridiculously long cycling sessions. Sometimes 100 miles a day, the constant running screen on my smartphone for navigation is the main energy destroyer, especially when riding in the sun and need to have it on full brightness. My good old Samsung Galaxy A20e already has good battery life with continuously running screen due to a potato as a processor, but e-ink would last so much longer. And in general, since many things you do with a smartphone run in high contrast, like text on apps and websites, I assume it would be pretty usable. And while videos look weird, I think it would be fun in a silly way to keep watching KZbin with this.

Totally want to see the look on the manufacturer's face when you try to return this slightly damaged device. "Sir, there's a Lovecraftian horror image scratched into the device" "Yeah, shipping damage. Pretty sure it's a llama if you just squint a little..."

I've been using my Samsung Z Fold 3 for a few years now and my first reaction when you showed this off was "Holy shit that's a cool phone." I love the minimalism of it, and I'd love to see a deeper dive into it's features.

A foldable smartphone with an OLED outer screen and inner big color eInk screen will be quite practical device for folks who love to read while travelling or office commute ..

People recycle/throw away/sell for parts, phones that die. With this, your phone remembers and keeps the moment it died alive for the rest of time (or however much it takes to decay this sort pf material) and I would not want to throw away a piece of history

I want an e-ink folding phone/tablet with 2 color screens on the front and rear, and 2 monochromatic screens inside. That way, it can look like whichever book/manga you are reading, complete with the front and rear artwork in color (and you could invert the unit to read colorized spreads as well, then just invert it again when the content goes back to black and white).

If I was a smart phone designer, I'd do 2 screens, front and back. E-ink on one side and full color on the other. For so many tasks using the e-ink display would trump even the best OLED, and being able to hold an image with no power consumption would be incredibly valuable.

I think as long as you don’t let social media control your life and you have a decent amount of self-control. It’s not bad to be online for a while as long as you get what you need to get done done

a very interesting phone, the built style is very similar to most android phone in 200-500 dollar range and it's seems like the screen replacement and most components repair will also be done in the same way, although 1 could argue about how impossible it is to find the spare parts

E ink displays seem like they would have a great place in some billboard instances - like airports and stadiums, where the info doesn't update often and doesn't need to be color
