And I had a bunch of different brands of phones, including some that I would throw on purpose and the only time the back popped off it was thrown about 25 meters away, so I'd say that's fair and that would never happen in normal situations.

I did my own back glass replacement for my sister. iPhone 8 Plus. Had to buy like a $130 frame online that had the buttons still installed. And it also came with battery and charge port. Had to swap ALL the guts over. One hell of a repair compared to the typical shit tbh

Not only the permanently glued battery is difficult and dangerous to remove, but also it is very unlikely that anyone will be able to buy a replacement battery because the factory assumes it is fixed in place and cannot be replaced. I just did a screen replacement today on my G8 ThinQ, and it went well! I removed the battery (after everything else) with a generous amount of isopropyl alcohol and 3 plastic picks. Much better than the "pry of shame" and I managed to get it out without bending it at all. Gotta say, watching you pull parts out of the phone with a metal utility knife and pry tools makes me cringe though.

LG G8 also had audiophile Sabre DAC chips and actual physical headphone jack, which sounds great. It had removable SD card slot, and I also like their camera's color rendering and overall look of photos. I've used my G8 for 3 years, and now the battery's running down faster and likely dying. Seeing this vid about glued-in battery is discouraging, as there is no equivalent mobile phone available to purchase on the market today with all the features G8 had..

Little trick I use....get some electronics cleaner from Radio Shack. Did my first G8 today and removed the battery in about 45 seconds without bending it. With the tube on the sprayer, I sprayed a little bit around the edges and let it sit for about 5 seconds. Was able to get a plastic pry tool under it and lift it a little bit. Sprayed some more under the battery and it practically fell out. That stuff breaks the adhesive down so much better than plain old alcohol.

Thanks to your video, I salvaged two of these today. I had two with broken screens, one with a swollen battery. I had two pristine demo units, available all over ebay for about $60. I simply popped the motherboard and mic board in the demo unit, and I had a brand new phone. :) Just a tip for anyone who really loves this device (as I do) and wants to keep using them. The screen and CPU screen outshines the V20, which I'd used and loved for years. Thanks for a cool video!

The heatpipe internal 'dirt' is quite important. It is sintered material that acts as a wick allowing the heatpipe to work in any orientation. Without it, the liquid-gas phase change would only work if the heat source is always positioned downhill of the pipe. Search for how heatpipes work.

Here's a tip: If you need to remove a battery for replacement you can fully discharge first by attaching a resistor across it or even just leaving the phone turned on until it dies, a battery discharged to the protection chip threshold is very unlikely to catch fire even if crushed or punctured since the mechanism that starts the wild explosive fires we have seen needs electrical energy to heat up the internals of the battery. Still, disassembly should be done outside or at least near something fireproof like an oven pan to throw the burning phone into...

Strain isn't good for the ribbon cable, and a small amount of space is given so the battery can naturally expand and contract due to temperature and wear changes. A loose battery could damage the ribbon cable and/or disconnect, rendering the phone useless. Plus, bouncing around could also bend the corner of the battery, which could cause it to blow up like the Nite 7 did.

@@forceablepizza764 Oof, admittedly I reused the adhesive from my old battery, but the s6 edge didn't use pull tabs, so all the adhesive was left behind on the midframe and could secure the new battery in place.

The 'dirt' in the heat pipes is most likely sintered copper powder, which is done to increase surface area, thereby increasing heat transfer

Funnily i was actually watching this on a LG G5 and yes i can remove my LG G5 battery anytime and everywhere in less than 5 minutes by pressing a button and pulling the bottom part. 3 years later with the LG G8 they decided to seal the battery permanently. They actually used to make batteries sealed back in 2012 and 2013 with the LG Optimus G and LG G2 but those phones didn't use permanent adhesive. It's a shame that newer counterparts were a downgrade to the older ones. It's not just that but i noticed off that phones in 2024 doesn't have a removable battery, SD card slot and headphone jacks where i heavily rely on no wonder why i am still holding my hands on a LG G5 despite it's a 8 year old phone but it at least has all of my needs. I will only get my next phone only if they put SD cards, removable batteries and headphone jacks back. Removable batteries is very important since if it swells you can easily remove it. A swollen battery must be removed and replaced ASAP as this can damage the other componente of a phone such as the screen and etc.

I have the same phone with 3 cameras (I'm in Italy) and the battery starts to run out faster 😢, but I have another problem: the rear right camera lens vibrates when I take regular image photos and doesn't vibrate if I take panoramic photos. What could be the problem and how can I solve it? Maybe it would be more convenient to change phone for a new battery and lens? But I'd rather keep this one. Thank you

Looks like if you remove the rear glass, you could hit the area behind the battery (the metal structure) you could safely get some heat into the adhesive without smoking the battery. Makes the battery replacement more involved, but should reduce the risks associated with the heavy prying and bending that's necessary when removing the old battery.

@@2moke2creen i added a custom battery to my v20 now its capacity is 30 Ah(30000 mAh). it is a heavy brick now buti only have to charge once every several week. and because its on the outside i can use my dcpower supply to charge it at 20 amps in a few hours

I’m not saying this is why there is dirt in the pipe, but I think that the dirt helps keep the heat in side the pipe. So it’s not just going strait into the phone and heating up the back of the phone (like my iPhone 5se does, but I use it everyday)

In my experience, LG batteries typically only last 13-15 months before showing serious degradation. Looks like deciding my V20 would be the last LG phone I ever owned wasn't a bad decision.

No mention of MLT-STD 810G transit drop rating with low temperature resistance. That's one reason i like LG's phones. They can take a hit. Thay's probably why the 🔋 is cemented in. Also, that's not dirt in the thermal heat pipe....lol it's actually copper dust which isn't usually pure so it looks like...dirt.

I think we're gonna see the same from other manufacturers. The last couple of years smartphone technology is slowing. Phones from 2016 can easily be still used today. The new phones just have a couple of more gimmicks that are rarely used by the average person. And most people wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars just to have the newest phone while their old one is still good. That's why manufacturers have to make their phones last just a couple of years so people would buy their new ones.

@Samsung Galaxy S7 edge yeah, i had a nexus 5 (which was made by lg) and it was a great phone. It was so easy to repair. I've cracked the screen and just replaced it, I've changed the battery two times without a problem. The only issue was a little connector which I've damaged unfortunately and the screen was flickering sometimes. It was annoying and had to get a new phone, but the nexus is still working and i would've use it if it wasn't that problem
