The Galaxy Fold is here for its official durability test! The screen wasn't strong enough, and dust was getting inside the device. So Samsung canceled their customers preorders, added a few new slight design changes, and here we are, almost a year after the first announcement, with Version 2 of the Galaxy Fold.

That's what happens when engineers make these in lab environments. The lab doesn't have dust everywhere. They really should have made the engineers work inside a machine shop so that there would be plenty of debris to have to ward against. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten the phone till next year, but it'd be a kick ass phone then. So sad to see how easily damaged the screen is with just a fingernail.

So I'm coming back to this video now, after first happening upon it when it first released. This video was my very first exposure to the IDEA of a foldable smartphone, and while it definitely failed in just about every practical way, the idea intrigued me from the get-go. Fast-forward to now, a few years later, and I've been using a Z Flip 3 since Decembwr 2021, and I have a Z Fold 4 on preorder. The Galaxy Fold walked, so that the future Z Series could run. It's amazing to see how far the series has come since this video; now, as long as you know what you're getting, foldable phones are expected to last you the normal length of any other smartphone. Credit where credit's due, Samsung has definitely created something to get people excited for smartphones again.

That sand test was literally the tipping point between “yeah, that looks great, I want it so much, and I’ll be careful” to “it’s not possible for me to be that careful”. If it can have particulate ingress against gravity and irreparably damage the phone... well, setting it on the counter while I make tea just seems too risky. Folding phones are unquestioningly the future, but the present is still very much in the build verification testing phase.

He was the one that accidentally pulled out the actual screen thinking it's screen protector that basically rendered the screen dead and then posted about this problem on YT. Later Samsung called back their devices to fix this problem. I personally feel people like marquis are dumb though, like why in the world you would remove the screen protection anyways if it's not coming off easily?
