Our Jersey Giant Hen hit 14 lbs. As we lived in the city....🤣 Everybody swore she was a turkey! Kali was indoor/stroller trained, and was a marvleous breed representative, she LOVED being admired and petted. Others determined she was a rooster. (Not many country people around) Many little children got to meet a chicken in person, and she was there for it. A lovely soul.

Sounds like a very lucky hen that lived a very good life. Jerseys really are one of the sweetest breeds.

Oh heck ya, I love the names! I now regret not getting the Jersey Giants last year. I do miss my Faverolles. Great layers and very family friendly too.

I think I accidentally ended up with one of these. Believe it was suppose to be an Easter egger. But there were Jersey Giants next to that bin. She grew twice as quick and looks identical. Despite being the biggest chicken, she’s super chill. She’s like 4 months old now about. Her legs are massive
@jake73962 ай бұрын
She doesn’t look anything like the other Easter egger chicken I got that is def an Easter egger. Big size difference as well and the Easter egger is more temperamental now that it’s older

Sure sounds like it. Enjoy! They really are a great breed. We love all our Jerseys. They are so sweet and keep the peace around here. Should make a great addition to your flock.

Most the black Easter eggers seem to have poofs on their head, cheeks, or under neck. But this one doesn’t. She’s so pretty and mellow, love her!

@jake7396 ours courtesy like little royals just about every time you pass one in the yard. They are very submissive and friendly.

The only animals I named were my first 3 Nigerian goats and have since given up 2 of them. My kids name our animals, but I don't bother keeping up. I don't have pets; I have working farm animals. I keep hearing people say they are dual purpose in videos, but can't find one video of someone that has actually butchered and eaten one, and I bet that's probably due to giving them names.

How is the meat? Is the flavor what we’re used to? And is it tender?
@northern.lights.homestead3 ай бұрын
The meat is very good. Juicy and tender. Flavor will vary based on their feed. Even the roosters had a fair bit of meat on them at 9 months. They hit heavy weights fast but longer you wait on processing the higher the fat.
@kingjohndavidsr97203 ай бұрын
@@northern.lights.homestead thanks for that info. What kind of feed for the best flavor? Will it taste like or better than grocery store chicken?
@northern.lights.homestead3 ай бұрын
@kingjohndavidsr9720 we free range all year and feed a mix of wild seed scratch and table scraps in winter. Ours love ground pork and dark leafy greens and all kinds of fruits. The best nutrition is the stuff they will find in the yard though. Bugs, frogs and worms mixed with grass, dandelion and clover along with all the other tasty things found outdoors will make any animal happy, healthy and taste better.

my boxes are 12x12x12. how big do you need for the giants?
@kellykibbe-smith53968 ай бұрын
I have a couple jerseys as well. My boxes are 12x12 also. All my large breeds do fine with that size. They seem to have plenty of clearance to maneuver around eggs. I definitely wouldn’t recommend going smaller. Another good tip is to collect eggs daily or multi times. Especially if they lean towards all using the same box. It will prevent eggs from squishing against each other.
@northern.lights.homestead8 ай бұрын
I will agree with @kellykibbe-smith5396. We have smaller and larger boxes and they seem to manage just fine in both.

No roosters, huh? Oh well.😢
@northern.lights.homestead8 ай бұрын
I'm afraid not 😢 We just aren't set up to keep roosters and the ones we had were way to aggressive with the hens and starting to turn their sites on us.
