Fantastic vintage footage of an equally fantastic era in boxing, Jersey Joy Walcott and Rocky Marciano were both in a league of their own. Thank you very much for posting.

Rocky Marciano doesn't look very muscular or big as some of his opponents. His boxing style also doesn't look very technical. But he has tremendous capability to absorb hits to his body and chin and keep fighting with the same intensity. That, and his sledgehammer hands got him past through everyone.

I read somewhere that Rocky apparently doesn't bulk up on purpose so he feels lighter and have more stamina when fighting that's pretty smart to me

After watching and studying this fight numerous times over the years, I've come to realize how tough and resilient Marciano really was,...Walcott was stepping into his punches with power, and connecting frequently and Rocky took a real beating, tha t few would have survived,....but rockys bull like strength and iron will saw him weather the storm, and fight back,....Marcianos incredible stamina and conditioning enabled him to stay strong deep into fights,....and this fight more than any illustrated this,...going into the 13 rd ,...he was 8-4 down on many scorecards,...and only a knockout would see he become champ,.....and he did,...that sledgehammer right, knocking the champ cold out......people always disclaim Rocky as a poor champ who only beat bums, or old boxers,....if say just study the fighter, and his will to win at all costs, ...WINNING when the odds are against you,...well Rocky always dug deep,.and always found a way to win....and to me that's the sign of a great fighter, and a great champ....if which Rocky certainly was.

Rocky was something else when it came to how tough he was. Absolutely reckless, if he didn’t have that chin i’m convinced he would have been just another boxer. The fact that his chin and resilience is pretty much what made him great should say just how tough he was

Joe Walcott had a neat trick, he used to lean back onto the ropes, then using the bounce back from the ropes to launch a punch at his opponent. In the 13th round of the first fight, he was about to do it when Rocky hit him with a punch that would have dropped a cart horse! Rocky Marciano undefeated heavyweight Chapion of the world. 49-0. A record that still stands today. In an interview Walcott once said of Rocky, that "The Rock" was unique in that he did not feel pain! 46 of Rocky's 49 opponents were knocked out or stopped.

@naaim sharif Do you know this for a fact, "Matter of a fact since Rocky had ties to the mob", or is simply repeating rumors? You know nothing about a man that died before you were old enough to know what boxing was. It is "documented fact" that Jersey Joe was heavily connected. Also a few years later, Liston & Clay, was mafia dictated. That was a total fix, as Clay could never handle a beast like Liston. Hell, even the potus J.F. Kennedy declared that Patterson must win over Liston, as he wanted a respectable, and well liked man to be Champion...not a junk/jail-yard dog like Liston. Simply because he was Italian & white, did not mean he must have won only fixed fights. Marciano was one punch from losing to both Walcott & Charles. Ezzard Charles opened-up Rocky's nose like a banana-split, and his manager was ready to throw-in the towel, and the referee was also ready to stop the fight, but Rocky unleashed a barrage of shots and stopped Charles. That was not mafia orchestrated! Rocky was a tough out, and if you came to fight him, you'd better be ready to defend from the opening bell, until you could take no more battering. It's not honest to bad-mouth somebody, using hearsay/gossip. If you can't prove what you say...it is only "gossip", and we all know that "only old widows spread gossip", "men make gossip"!

BL7 ain't lying - look at the beating Rock takes from the old man - granted, Walcott was a great puncher/boxer, so no shame in getting beaten up by him... but THE ROCK was Champ for those reasons, he had heart a punch and talent - and STAMINA like no other heavy I've ever seen. Had this gone to the judges, was close for sure, and I'm sure each judge had the same rounds cored differently - that's the danger in a decision, leaving the outcome to humans/human nature.

Its unbelievable to watch him eat those shots from Jersey Joe. Joe was stepping into everyone of them and most looked to make great contact. I've seen some comments comparing these fighters to more modern ones and I think most points are valid, but I don't think we can underplay how hearty many fighters from this era were. I think it certainly should be considered in any old school/new school comparison we make.

Rocky's fighting method was far more than people think: If you watch a video that showed how he had underrated defense, they slow down the video and show that many times Rocky used head movement to avoid some strikes. He also fought in a different way, many of his "missed" punches were misses only because they were not hitting the body or head. Rocky would aim for the arms to bruise and wear them down. If the opponent made it to the later rounds, Rocky's intensive stamina and the bruising on the opponents arms is where Rocky would go beserk and reckless: After he had systemically taken the opponents arms out and he had lasting stamina. His most notable movement as Slip to Right followed with a strike (Uppercut, Hook, Haymaker, Cross, could be anything, it was deceptive) and that Gazelle Punch where he put his weight on one leg and all but leapt forward with his strikes. He was also able to use his short arms and height to his advantage with in-fighting. So, Attacking Arms, Underrated Defense, Deceptive Right Slip Counter Punch. Rocky combined elements of being an In-Fighter, Bruiser and Counter-Striker at times. This LOOKS sloppy and brawlerish in grainy black and white video, but slow it down and observe. Combine this stylized mixture of three boxing styles with Rocky's INCREDIBLE stamina, IRON chin and HEAVY BLOWS. He was dangerous no matter who you were, he was unique.

I read that Walcott had smothered himself in liquid heat. That makes the victory even more impressive.

Jersey Joe was very tough and he was actually winning the fight at the time of the knockout but Rocky had that desperation and that unbelievable right hand

One thing that Marciano was better at than any fighter I've ever seen, and that was his stamina. You simply could not outlast Rocky in a fight. You would get tired, and Rocky would keep coming at you no matter what round it was.

Think Walcott and I are overestimating Fox? Well, try this on for size. The great sportsman, Irving Rudd, who wrote The Sporting Life, was a boxing enthusiast and sports press agent who saw many of the great fighters from the 1930's and 40's. His memoirs are filled with stories about King Kong Mathews, Beau Jack Benny the Whoosh, Razor Phil, Jack Trammel, Mushy Jackson, and so many others. He was close to and observed the boxing exploits of Kid Gavilan, Rocky Graziano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Ken Norton and, in fact, promoted major fights for all of them. Rudd eventually became the Director of Publicity for Top Rank Boxing. When interviewed by Red Smith of the New York Times, Smith asked Rudd to name the greatest fighter he ever saw, without hesitation, Rudd replied: "The greatest fighter I ever saw was Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis was third, and the second greatest was Tiger Jack Fox." Read that quotation again. Interestingly enough, Rudd just happened to be at the fight when Fox climbed off the canvas to knock Jersey Joe Walcott out at the Rockland Palace and he was witness to the second encounter when Fox decisioned Walcott as well. And last but not least, the committee which selected the greatest fighters of each division of the century, named Fox as one of the AP's 10 greatest light heavyweights. So losing to the likes of Fox was no disgrace. Fighting the likes of Fox should be a cause for bestowing recognition instead of denigration. Make no mistake about it. Jersey Joe Walcott was a vastly underrated fighter and champion, and truly a great, great fighter. And when Marciano took the title from Walcott, Walcott's age had little to do with it. Walcott personally told me that he never felt better in his entire ring career that night and he figured that he had Marciano "ready to go in the thirteen" and believed that he would knock Marciano out in the thirteenth round. And, isn't it interesting that Walcott, himself, rightfully or wrongfully, was honored in being selected as one of the ten greatest heavyweights of the century in the same sense as was Fox as a light heavyweight? Obviously, the panel consisting of Eddie Futch, Angelo Dundee, Gil Clancy, Lou Duva and Don Chargin, just might have a little more on the ball than they are now being credited for in light of the criticism leveled at them by some who unfairly use Walcott as a whipping boy.

This is like watching Boxing in slow motion!😂 Back then hHeavyweight was pretty much about exchanging punches. Boxers like Gene Tunney and Muhammad Ali changed the dynamics and gave rise to heavyweights like Holyfield. Funnily enough these old time Boxers were smaller than those of today but moved around much less.
