A brief chronology of the 2000s world heavyweight boxing championship.
Who were the Top 5 world heavyweight boxing champions during the 2000s?
In the 2000s there were 17 men who held claim to at least a portion of a major heavyweight championship between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2009. For the purposes of this video, we are specifically comparing championship reigns and championship bouts during this period, as we explore a brief chronology of the 2000s heavyweight championship landscape.
The video will also provide an opinion of the Top 5 heavyweight champions in the 2000s, from all 17 major world champions, including: Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman, Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko, Chris Byrd, Roy Jones Jr, Ruslan Chagaev, Nikolai Valuev, John Ruiz, Lamon Brewster, Siarhei Liakhovich, Shannon Briggs, Sultan Ibragimov, Sam Peter, Oleg Maskaev, and David Haye.
So who were the Top 5 heavyweight champions during the 2000s?
This video documentary will attempt to answer that question.

Vitali Klitschko 6' 7″ 250 lbs KOs 87% with 80" reach only lost twice due to horrible cut and torn rotator cuff. He never hit the canvas and was never behind on judges scorecards after the 2nd round. He had excellent power with granite chin and great determination with PhD-intelligence. Vitali would have been a Huge factor in any era.

Byrd made him quit and Lewis has beaten him to a pulp. Also, he didn't have that excellent of a power. His brother was the power puncher of the two and the more complete boxer. Saying that, Vitali would definitely be a tough contender in any era. Too bad he didn't fight top competition, especially during the second part of his career.

This is Vitali's PR line but another way of looking at it is that he lost vs the two best opponents he faced, one on a quit job, and had a win record comparable to Wilder.

@@nenivreb it's a tad better than Wilder's. Deontay's record against Top 10 opposition is 3-4-1, Vitali's 6-2. Still, Vitali's resume is weak and I can't understand how people rate him so high. His brother was waaay more accomplished.

One has to consider Wladimir Klitschko's long reign as champion to be among the likes of Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and Larry Holmes. Consider the 20+ title defenses--in every single fight, his opponent worked just as hard and was as determined to win as he was. Yes, he has lost fights, but he came back. There is an old saying, "show me a fighter that has never lost, and I'll show you a fighter who has never fought anyone". Some say that Wladimir was never truly tested during his long reign as champion, but is that really a fair criticism? That is more a testament to his skills and hard work that he put into preparing for his fights. And he was in a memorable war at the end of his career with a gallant, though losing performance against Anthony Joshua. With the passage of time, he will be remembered as a great champion.
@RobertParody

Vladimir fought only three men who were Hall of Fame worthy. Fury, Joshua and perhaps Byrd. His record against them was 1-3. Also after he lost to Purity, he refused a rematch. After being stopped by Sanders he refused a rematch as well and had his brother fight both of them. After his knockout by Brewster he waited three years till Brewster had been knocked out and had had a detached retina to fight him again. He was the best of his time in a weak division. And even there, he didn't have to fight the top contender who was his brother unlike every champion since Joe Louis. So you can't rate him in the top ten but 12 to 13. Another win by Usek and he passes Vladimir. Useks three victories over Fury and Joshua are more impressive than anything in Vladamirs reign. .
@MaccaveliPL
@MaccaveliPL Ай бұрын
@@RobertParody He fought Fury and Joshua when he was 40, lol. And still made AJ fight competetive. He wanted to rematch Sanders, but Corrie prefered to fight for the vacant WBC belt instead. When he was the champion he didn't fight his brother, but defeated numerous number 3 in the division - Chagaev, Haye and Povetkin. Then after Vitali retired he fought a top contender in Pulev. He did what every champion should be doing - fought the best available opposition. He's definitely top 10 material.

Wlads 8-0 is better than Lewis 6-1. Numbers aside he has a edge in unifications which was the criteria for putting Tyson over Holmes in the 80s. By the time Tyson fought Lewis he had struggled against lesser opposition and lost thrice, him being highly rated was name-recognition. A undefeated champ, silver-medalist and southpaw like Ibragimov is easily on par with Grant, Tyson or Rahman. Chagaev was also a undefeated ex-champ stripped for reasons outside the ring and the Peter win aged well. Creating a new lineage out of absolute chaos is a better individual feat than any of Lewis and if you add the numbers favoring Wladimir and unifications favoring Wladimir he is a easy choice over Lewis. Ratings were also massively pro-american biased with the first three Alphabet-organisations all being US-based with close ties to people like Don King. Eastern europeans were rated below their worth both Klitschkos and many of their opponents. Choosing not to count the WBO when it was already held in esteem in europe and other parts of the world is in and of itself a pro-american biased choice, people thought Jeff Lacy would beat Joe Calzaghe on the same grounds. But even with this heavily pro-american skewed system Klitschko wins and he wins in would-be-tie-breakers and there is no head-to-head loss to upset it. Lennox always said he was underestimated because he was canadian or a brit, but non-native english speakers never got HBO commentator jobs to build their own legend like Lewis.

Sam Peter was undefeated and considered possibly the hardest puncher in the division at the time and Wladimir won every round he was not knocked down in, won the fight and won a rematch even more decisively. He did not have the best chin ever, but neither had Lewis. Prime Lewis got KOed by Rahman, while 41 year old Klitschko got back up from prime AJ's hardest punch and knocked AJ down. Sure Wlad got knocked down more times but he also had more fights and victories than Lennox Lewis.

Vitali is clearly #1 because of that entire time span of that decade and the unfortunate loss to Lennox, that wasn't a loss because of lack of skill but rather a lucky punch by Lennox. Otherwise he would have lost by points. And thats the issue here. Win is a Win and it was right to stop that fight, but Lennox knew he couldnt beat him afterwards, so he retired. Lennox record looks great with certain perspectives. However, he fought legends so late. Holyfield in 99, Tyson in 02. Didnt fight bowe, foreman, and go knocked out by boxers that have no right beating a “top 10” hw. He’s great but I do not consider him the greatest hw boxer at all considering this. Def not top 5 and Lennox being number 1 in 2000s hw is insane when he had 7 fights in the decade and got flat lined in one of them.

Blaming Lewis for the bowe or foreman fight not happening is the definition of being a casual bowe threw his belt away instead of fighting Lewis and foreman avoided both bowe and Lewis as well as multiple other fighters in the 90s and was extremely choosy about his match ups and Holyfield and Tyson both put off fighting Lewis until later so they could take other match ups yet you’re blaming it on Lewis lmaooo

Lennox' record IS great infact it's one of the deepest and very best in hw history and during a golden era. From early in his pro development he sought out the best possible opponents domestically and internationally and continued with that MO throughout his career. Has he said "I don't want no Mickey Mouse fights." He was at or near the top for more than a decade. Ducked nobody. It was he who was avoided. Tyson avoided him as long as he could (not the other way around) Holyfield wasn't exactly clamouring for fight until they had to, but he ducked nobody too. BTW Holyfield was ranked no1 (above him) when they fought. Bowe ducked him, Moorer wanted no part, Foreman was honest and said he wanted no part of him. He cleaned out the rest and in the second best era in division history. Then dug a little into the next era. Repeat. CLEANED OUT the division, undisputed and retired on top. Iron chinned McCall was his mandatory and Rahman was a very good contender has he shown. Lewis' record speaks for itself. Brief complacency cost him his 2 (avenged) blemishes. Toss up between Lewis and Holmes for 3rd all time imo. Long post for yt but a rare one. Enjoy!

Technically, the WBO wasn’t officially recognised as a major world championship fully until February 2007. That was when the other major 3 governing bodies all finally recognised its rankings. The WBA was first to recognise them in 2000, followed by the WBC in 2004 and then finally, the IBF, who held off recognising the WBO until February 07. So, even though Hopkins is considered the first 4 belt, undisputed champion, he technically was already undisputed and didn’t need the WBO to be considered as such, same with Taylor.

100%. Zab Judah and O'Neil Bell were considered undisputed only having 3 major world belts. I don't know why Rummy is still hanging to that 2004 date.

Wladimir Klitschko is a upgrade on Lennox. Both gold medalists, same Emanuel Stewart-trained style, but bigger, stronger, with longer reach, just as good a jab, just as much heart, never being daunted as seen well in the first Sam Peter fight or the AJ fight. More longevity, winning past the age when Lennox retired (37), more dominant in his prime, more title defenses, more non-title wins, more unifications, more KO wins than Lennox had fights period.

How can you name victory over Vitali was any good. Vitali was winning on points and if Klichko was not cut he would have beaten Lenox. Despite the doctor deciding to end the fight and give the win to Lenox he did not earn that win and the crowds reaction proves my point. Lenox got booed and Klichko recieved a standing ovation from the crowd.

A loss is a loss buddy. Vitali lost to a Lennox that was past his prime. In Lennox's prime he would've beat Vitali in much more convincing fashion.

Vitali wasn't cut by accident. Lewis caused the cut. It's like if one boxer was winning easily on points by round 11 and then suddenly one punch and the other boxer ended the fight. Doesn't matter if he was behind on points he still won.
@MaccaveliPL

Well, Lewis beat him to a pulp. He couldn't see and looked like he was hit by a mack truck. Just like Dubois beat Hrgović on cuts while losing on the scorecards. And the fight was way closer than some people paint it to be. Vitali was winning 58-56, but Lewis was getting steam and won 2 last rounds. Harold Lederman and many from the press had a fight even at 57-57. It was a great win by Lewis.

If you really watch that fight it’s obvious that Lewis was starting to land more telling punches towards the end. Lewis was also out of shape. The fact that it was stopped by a cut means nothing.

Hi Rummy, question. With Lennox Lewis supposedly considering a "comeback" what does that mean for the lineage? Will we need a unified super duper lineal title fight? Is his claim to the lineage still plausibly valid like some of the earlier lineal claims which were settled in the ring? What's the procedure here?
@S-fp7uz
@S-fp7uz Ай бұрын
The lineage never gets lost until you lose so there would be two legitimate lineages. I'm sure whoever is the champion would gladly take a fight against 58 year old Lewis to unify though. If some contender beats him that guy would likely be fast-tracked to a titleshot. Either way the lineages probably would not be seperate for too long.

@@S-fp7uzI was assuming Lewis would fight either KZbinrs like Jake Paul or legends like Roy Jones in the same way Tyson did. I don't imagine anyone taking the lineal belt off him even at his age but if a KZbinr does it'll be embarrassing to the lineage.
