Being a chemist myself, using the concept of chirality as a metaphor to describe that Walt is still looking the same as he used to, but is becoming a different person, is absolutely brilliant. Having worked with hydrofluoric acid, it's a terrifying substance to work with, but its dissolving properties are a bit exaggerated in the show.

It’s on purpose because they didn’t want to actually teach people how to easily dissolve bodies. I remember seeing a clip of one the producers talking about how there’s intentionally incorrect chemistry sprinkled through the show so normal people wouldn’t be replicating anything done in the show.

Not if you mix in some special sauce (water with a little more oxygen in it) and heat it up. You'd also need more than 2 gallons to eat through a glazed ceramic metal tub and gypsum sheetrock though. Probably more like the entire tub would have to be filled. You'd also need proper fume management. Horrible fumes from the reaction.

As someone who loves veggie food, trying to make stuff look exactly like meat products does a disservice to both the meat and veggie products. Just replace the bacon with something tasty and healthier. Bacon that isn't really bacon is just going to be disappointing.

The veggie bacon is unforgivable. And it was his birthday. The writers clearly set us up to hate Skyler from the very first scene she's in, and they continue to make her unlikable throughout. Then people get mad that people hate Skyler, and then the actress attacked the fans over it, too. If she wants to blame somebody for not liking her character she should blame the writers. She's just written that way, and the plot of the series conspires to make her the person we hate, especially when you start to think about it at more than a surface level. For example CPAs get paid a lot more than public school teachers in New Mexico. Their financial problems are her fault for not working. Why is Walt working two miserable jobs that he hates when they could be making a better living in a much nicer house off of her salary alone, with good benefits, at any accounting firm in the area? Instead, she stays home, hangs out with her sister or talks to her on the phone all day. She writes her little short stories that never get published, and she goes around collecting worthless trinkets at yard sales to sell for pennies of profit on eBay.

It is a slow burn, simply because the stakes aren't as high as I've seen in certain shows. And it's really just two major plot points most of the time, sometimes even one. I like the writing and build-up, reminds me of sopranos in a way.

My dad has about the same chemistry degree as Walter the main character and he absolutely loved this series. He watched all seasons when he got laid of from work and it gave him some strange ideas for what he should do for work. 😂 From what he has told me most chemistry in this series is somewhat accurate. I started watching this series but I don’t think I watched more than the first season but maybe this is the perfect way to watch this series with you.

I think it depends on the time in your life when you watch it. Your age/circumstances. I wasn’t interested in it when it came out, I was like 13, or years after. I wouldn’t have appreciated it well. I was into other shows like the walking dead and supernatural lol. Fast forward to my late 20s and I just watched it for the first time last year recommended by my bf, I was hooked from the first episode!

It took me 3 attempts to watch past episode 4 before I could get into this show. Sometimes you just aren't ready for something and that's okay. That being said, the first episodes of the show are a slow build up, but I don't think that is a bad thing looking back on it now. It's like a skill check for people who are ready for the show.

Some notes on the chemistry: The show's approach is mostly "creative liberties based on reality". Hydrofluoric acid will indeed dissolve metals, ceramic, and organic matter, but not plastic. However, it doesn't dissolve them as well as displayed in the show. Mythbusters did a rather disgusting test on this, and the uh....structural integrity of the carcass remained greater than portrayed in BB. It will also release incredibly toxic gas in the process - if they really were dissolving a body in HF, everyone in that house would be dead.

To this day, this and the next one are one of my top favourite episodes of any tv series of all time - this was so well done (how in this ep they handled these VERY heavy topics and yet managed to lighten up with top-notch comedy + the realism of the process, not sugarcoating the guilt, the decision-making being hard, the panic of having to do stuff like this for the first time, etc. I love that their inexperience shows).

acid "burns" through things by reacting with it - so once an acid molecule has reacted with some other material, it's not acid anymore (generally). So a given amount of acid can only dissolve a fixed amount of other material. It won't burn through to the center of earth for that reason :-)

For the record, the desert area where Walt & Jesse park the RV to cook is on an American Indian reservation. The simplified version is that Indian Reservations have their own laws, and only answer to the US government. What that means is that Albuquerque city police and New Mexico State Police and the local county sheriff have no jurisdiction. Reservations have their own, independent police departments, which are frequently corrupt, or the enforcement arm of the tribal authorities, or are under-manned, -funded or equipped, so they are not so much of a threat. Also, Reservations are vast stretches of (generally crappy) land with low population, which means you are unlikely to run into people at random, and the people who live there are generally not interested in cooperating with outside law enforcement. All in all, it makes reservations a favored site for illicit activities. And it explains the similar look of the tow truck driver and the kids who found the gas mask at the end of the episode. Also, not sure what Pudgey meant by "Cow House Thing." The building in which cows are kept is universally called a barn, but in the American West, the term for a farm dedicated to raising livestock, as opposed to growing crops, is called a "ranch" (it's also a term for an architectural style of house). I believe the equivalent term in Australia is "station".

What was brilliant about this show is that all the main characters had their faults, being almost anti-heroes. Again the cinematography was exceptional in this show. The way Jessie and Walt go up the leagues is incredible. Funny scene when Jessie rings Walt and he tries to cover up the call, and then Skylar dials the number back. Crazy 8 after escaping knocks himself out on the tree and Walt bundles him back into the car. We see at this stage they just cannot handle to situation. Pinkman is so ridiculous in the store buying the plastic containers, and Walt just cant bring himself to do his deed. When Walt says Jessie sells him pot, it's funny when Skylar says what are you 16 years old. When Skylar confronts Jessie it is quite funny when she says she knows it all. Jessie being such an idiot of course puts the body in the bath and the acid eats through the ceiling. The two guys are almost in a comedy situation with their amateurish attempts at trying to deal with the situation. They of course have to learn fast. This is such a brilliant show, Vince Gilligan did such a fantastic job with it after his brilliant writing on the X-Files.
