You nailed it, Spartan: this ep was all about setting up the two alternatives with Walt - do it legally but swallow your pride and continue to be the man everyone pities, or do it illegally but feel like 'the man' and like you're alive. He chose the latter as per his 'pillow talk'.
@keltavuokko Жыл бұрын
And of course also Jesse had to choose between external or internal 'death' if you will. He tried to choose the legal way but was tempted back into the business when the interviewer made sure he knew what kind of career would wait for him if he chose the 'externally good' route. Though we will never know for sure what would have happened to him after his cooking session with Badger if Walt hadn't turned up... (I think they gave us a hint there with the scenes with Badger, but). Oh, and I love how Walt keeps saying he hasn't had any say in his life but he literally handed the decision of would he kill a man to a coin toss. A wonderful detail to think about.
@Rowgue51 Жыл бұрын
There's an element of that to it. But it really has more to do with his history with the people offering the help which gets fleshed out more in future episodes.

This episode is really interesting the second time through. It’s absolutely insane that Walt wouldn’t take a high paying job that he absolutely deserves. His pride and ego is so massive that he would rather be putting himself and his family in constant danger rather than accept help.

@Rowgue51 Жыл бұрын
It's not really about him liking being in control, at least not at this point. It's more about him just being fed up with being belittled and like his opinion on anything is completely irrelevant. He feels like in every aspect of his life for his entire life he's been relegated to being the equivalent of an extra in a movie. You're just there as background to fill out the scene, but you don't actually matter and any random person could just as easily be substituted in your place and nobody would notice.

At this point I don’t think that Walt feels that he’s alive and “in control”. Rather, I think Walt feels desperate to do whatever he can to try to make some money to leave for his family before he eventually dies, and that he doesn’t want to be a charity case by accepting the free money from his ex-colleagues. He still has his pride, and won’t swallow it just to save his life and make it easier on him. He needs to feel like he can find a way take care of his personal situation and provide for his family on his own, like a man.
@Hexon66 Жыл бұрын
@@oaktree1628 I agree, obviously he hasn't fully gone full Heisenberg. But he's recognizing that he's being motivated by his lack of control. Skyler being a ballbuster, his inability to come to terms with the fact that his responsibility to his family is what caused him to lose his chance at success and wealth. There is still the facade that he's doing it for his family, and that's what gets him to move, but we'll know the truth when it ends.

Ugh SO good to revisit each episode. The pillow scene - !!! I've been thinking a lot (I'm a writer) about the protagonist/antagonist structure of BB. A strong case can be made that this show has dual protagonists, which is quite rare. Protagonist Walt wants to make sure his family is taken care of in case he dies; Protagonist Jesse wants to break free of "the life" and be accepted by his family. The antagonists are characters who you've yet to meet. I think having two protagonists whose relationship with one another is the central one makes this a particularly unique show. That, and the utterly flawless writing/directing/producing. I'm not sure anything better will ever be made. This is it.
