I sang this song a cappella for my friend Sean's wake when he died after a motorcycle accident. I sang it slower, like Jesse's original version. I said, "I'm not a Christian, but I steal their music sometimes. Think of the Mighty Hand as the love between friends." The big roughy toughy guys cried. One guy said he refused to accept Sean's death til he heard me sing this. Love each other. Walk in Peace.

I knew him way back in Montreal and everything everyone else has said is so true - he was truly a beautiful soul and will be missed. We need more of the gentleness, graciousness and humility that he embodied.

Born in Mississippi, he grew up in Memphis, gave up his US citizenship when he dodged the draft, and sought asylum in Canada, as many did. He left the South, but it didn't leave him.

Could it be any better than these three’s perfect harmonies. No clutter. No production. No instruments. No wonder these have always been three of my most favorite performers, in addition to being three of my most favorite human beings. Each with their individual hearts of gold and voices like the angels. Lord, how I miss Jessie. As genuine a southern gentleman as there has ever been. The courage to live in exile for his conscience’ sake for so many years with his heart still “way down south”. One of my lifetime heroes in so many respects.

1977 Western Ontario, Canada, Folk Festival. Back in the day of Nixon - Ford - Carter. Tricky Dick Nixon called Canada's prime minister Pierre Trudeau a Shit. Most of the Canadian kids in that Folk Festival that audience were proud of that.

Jesse Winchester, who passed away on Apr. 11, 2014 with Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, 1977, acapella. I used to see him at Ottawa's Le Hibou coffeehouse. My friend, Diane Gentes opened for him at GCTC and later saw him at Ottawa Folkfest. A great songwriter.
