Popular Woodworking magazine did a review of the Blue Spruce mortise chisels in the latest issue. They described the shock absorber aspect differently. Instead of being an ergonomic issue they described it as traditional chisels acting as a shock absorber for your mallet blow and the rod through the handle acting to remove that effect and transfer all of the force to the tip.
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I think I misunderstood what I read on the website. Looking again I see an important qualifier in the sentence "In other mortise chisels, the wooden handle acts as a shock absorber between your mallet and the blade."

First, love your vids. Never lose the humor aspect. Second, the tools from Blue Spruce truly are ready to use out of the box. Their attention to detail is uncanny. I have a dovetail saw from them, and their little chisel plane. The chisel plane is perfectly sharpened as it comes, and the sole of it gives new meaning to the term flat. The only tool I've ever seen that truly deserves to be called dead flat.

Those Jess-Em rulers are neat, but a bit pricey when you can do the same basic thing for way less. After an incident where I cut myself scribing a knife line on some work, I used double sided tape to stick some 400 grit sandpaper to the back of all my rulers (except the blades on my combination squares) which keeps the rulers perfectly in place when scribing.

I really appreciate the transparency in your tool review videos! Even some creators that I would generally trust put out videos that sometimes feel just like a sales pitch and if they don't tell me they aren't selling me something for money, then I really question whether or not they believe in the tool. You and JKM are two that come to mind that are always transparent and I know (or think I know) I can trust what you're saying to be your true opinion and with our best interests in mind. Thanks!

I love that it's written right on the title card. A lot of KZbinrs will say "I've included sponsor information down in the description" which just tends to hide that info from us (lookin at you Stumpy), since who's gonna actually go look that up most of the time. By blasting it right on the title card of each tool, I immediately know how to interpret the words that follow.

Like this style of quick review, thank you. Thank you also for pointing out that Harvey pricing is comical. I feel like going to the old Sears store and not knowing when to buy. If it ain't on sale, you sure don't want it. Harvey requires significant studies to know when to buy. I gave up on them for that reason.

I'm all in for the mini-review series - great idea. A few questions on the JessEm rulers: what's the nature of the grippy stuff? It is an abrasive adhered to the steel? Will it mar sanded/finished surfaces? Does it seem like it will last a long time before wearing out/flaking off?
@woodwhisperer
@woodwhisperer 3 ай бұрын
I can't say for sure exactly what it is or how they make it but it's definitely a hard coating of some kind. Almost reminds me of a course diamond grit on a sharpening stone. So yes, it can scratch your work if you press it down and then try to force the ruler to slide. But I assume most of us won't be doing that. In normal use, it didn't seem to leave any scratches.

I thought the advantage of that style chisel (like IBC) is that you can flatten 100% of the back. Does Blue Spruce also work that way? Also, while I love my various LN planes, I've stayed away from their chisels because of the constant feedback that the handles fall off. Is that no longer the case?

I have the RG-2 and am not impressed. Out of the box, it worked fine. But now, unless the dial is set to max, it spins with tool vibration, decreasing the pressure against the wood. To compensate, I have to set the dial half-way and bring it to the wood surface. I can then set it to full. For resaw work, the RG-2 will work fine. However the height of the RG-2 makes it awkward on the table saw for stock less than 2" tall. Consider the RG-1 for stock under 2" tall. Even then, the RG-1 is 1" tall. For stock that is not as tall as the RG-1/2, there are times I cannot use a push pad (Gripper in my case) because the RG-1/2 is taller than my stock and gets in the way.

Marc - I know they call it a ruler, but it's not a ruler, it's a rule. Rulers have a little extra space outside the markings, rules don't. For example, a 12" rule is 12", a 12" rule is 12 1/4", because they have that damned 1/8" extra on either end. Rulers don't belong in a woodworking shop, at least if you're careless like me an use them to measure the depth of something and always come up 1/8" off.
