I am 80 years of age and not a fan of what the internet has done to our culture but there is an exception and that is the ability to listen to a huge compliment of the songs that were popular in my best days. Thanks youtube. Jessi is one of my many favorites. Also the Ken Burns country music series on PBS recently is worthy of seeing again.

I didn't like this song at all when it came out. My dad did like it, and it would come on when we rode with him his crappy company car. 😊 When I was in my mid 20s, Jessi came into the retail store in where I worked near her and Waylons home in Brentwood outside of Nashville. She was being helped but kept looking over my way at the other end of the store. I knew who she was immediately but was afraid to go over because I felt guilty for not liking her big hit song when I was a kid. X🥴😊

Jessi wrote this song (like all her others) by herself and it became one of the biggest, most defining hits of the 1970s, selling almost 3 million copies as a single (No. 4 Billboard Pop, No. 1 Billboard Country, No. 1 Canada Pop, etc.). Her Capitol albums sold millions across country and pop, and she scored other self-written classic hits like ‘Storms Never Last’ and ‘What’s Happened to Blue Eyes.’ Yet, she pulled the rug out from under her meteoric career to devote herself to something far more important than fame-her marriage to Waylon Jennings and to motherhood. Did she do wrong? No way. She turned 80 last month (May 2023), remarried after decades as a widow, looks like she’s 50, still sings amazingly, and has a new album of original country-rock songs coming out in September. Jessi played the long game, and, being the “Carly Simon of country music,” nobody does it better.

@@rhaspados666 Yes. That Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Valens tragedy haunted the hell out of Waylon. For all of Waylon’s grit, he was a human being with plenty of soul. It took him ages to get over that. And Jessi was a huge part of his recovery-she stood by him through thick and thin (and he did some pretty awful things to her in the womanizing category), but she knew that he was always “chasing the song,” and stuck it out with him, patiently hoping and praying and believing he would kick the habit, and sure enough, he did, cold turkey, with her at his side. We would not have had those great Highwaymen years and Waylon’s late 80s and 90s albums had it not been for her. She can do little wrong, in my eyes.

Jessi has never been given credit or recognition for the true legendary artist she is. I don’t know how to describe it but listening to her songs much like Tammy Wynette is an experience and reaches down deep where your soul is. There should be an awards show that names simply legends of music and no not the hall of fame… I mean create Century Legends of Music as the top echelon of artists who’ve ever ever created and sang songs that will never fade away. Songs and artists who sing them like this or Etta James singing At Last. Willie Nelson singing Blue Eyes Crying or Led Zeppelin singing Stairway To Heaven and such.

Reminds me of my momma and that country bar we would go to. I’d make a killing at 7 years old running to the juke to play songs for the carnival of people who sat at a 3 sided small bar. Looking around you saw either Tammy Wynette hair or Waylon/Willie guys who were gruff. What I remember most about that place was my mom’s best friend’s who looked like Tammy Wynette and an accountant…. Shirley and Bobby. Their daughter was also a close friend… Anita. Why does the names fit a country trailer park community drinking their life away and reliving past loves and memories. I’m gonna write a country song about that tragedy of lost hope someday.

30 odd years ago I was an RN at a nursing home working the Alzheimer's wing. A man named George had "sundowner's syndrome"; he was fairly normal until evening then deteriorated rapidly. He had two fixations come bedtime: One, he'd left his truck out in the field and was worried about it; and two, he didn't know where his wife was (dead many years.) The truck wasn't a problem; someone would jingle his/her car keys and tell him he'd parked it in the garage. When it was his wife though, he'd get more and more upset (and violent) until we finally had to tell him that she was dead. That was the heart breaking part, because no matter how many times this occurred, for him it was the first time he'd heard it and his "fresh" grief would tear out your heart. If this song is really about a nurse dealing with such a patient, my heart goes out to her. If not, then it certainly does apply with those nurses who have to deal with this.

I can’t listen to this without crying. For years my interpretation was that it was about a man whose love of his life left him. Then I read a comment under the album version by someone who thought it was about a widower and that gave it a whole new meaning. I guess it could be either way, but she sings “His hand lead her away” on the album and now makes me think the loss is final. Jesse’s beautiful voice really nails the sorrow in this song.

It’s open to interpretation, which is the cool thing. Did the guy’s former love, Lisa, pass away, or did another man lead her astray? Either way, the feeling she conveys is the same, and a tale known to many: “Stop being hung-up on your ex. She’s gone, but I’m HERE now and never going to leave you.” There were obviously a lot of people who could relate to that, given how big a hit this song proved to be.

My son was married to a Lisa, and she just walked up to him one day and said "I have another" MY son was more than devastated he really went under. That's all I'm going to say about that, but he did get custody of his son. That's been 20 yrs ago and a lot has happened since then. I helped raise his son, he is now 22 and in nursing school, and doing well.

Lisa faced your son in person. I remember how it felt when one boyfriend told me out of the blue that our relationship was off, over the phone. Months later I heard he had shacked up with a female who broke off with her dude to be with my ex. No children involved. Eight years later I then married a divorced man. Only thanks to fb I was able to glean that the demon couple did not marry and split up one year before my wedding day. Reading her frustrations of how he had dumped her ... 😅😂😊😂😅

I am in my 50's but my soul is older in a lot of ways...How I wish it was the late 70' again when, many times, I was with my father in his favorite honky tonk and hearing songs like this one on the jukebox. Man, what a time that was.

One of the best for the simplest of reasons, Jessie did not try to over sing it, she just let the song be what it is. It is easy to see what Waylon seen and heard in her. God Bless

Back in the ‘80’s, here in South Carolina, I used to sing this song on the weekends with a little country/blue grass band at a weekend roadside place with a stage. Lots of local bands gathered there to fellowship & hear country, gospel & bluegrass. I sang mostly the old songs, & those from Loretta & Dolly, but the song that was most requested was I’m not Lisa from Jessi Colter. In fact people who requested it every weekend could not remember my name, but they’d see me in town in the grocery store, or at the gas station & yell across the parking lot, “HEY! You’re not Lisa!” One day my daughter asked if I cared that none of them could remembered my name, & I told her it was an honor to be remembered at all. I can’t think of a better song to be remembered for. It will always be one of my favorites.

Years and years ago, I had a compilation LP with this song on it. Heard it, and it made me cry! A young strong man, and a song on a record made me cry? So every time I played that LP, I had to be ready to skip the needle over that song. Many years have past, and I saw this song here on youtube. I am in my late 60's now. I should be over it.... Nup! Played it, and I have tears in my eyes. Mayb I'll be able to play it in another 49 years.
