Your pain is palpable, and certainly justified. It made me cry to see what pain you were in here. I really, really hope you went on to have a good life. He and Fletcher were grown men pretending to be men of God, stealing money and taking advantage of a young lady. They ruined most of her life for 15-20 minutes of evil enjoyment. I was sickened by that creepy journalist that said she was a prostitute. If Bakker repented why hasn’t he told Jessica he was sorry? This whole story boils my blood every time I hear it.

My parents were long-term friends with John and Shirley Fletcher. I knew him as this larger-than-life Super Preacher. His son was the first best friend I can remember. This mess just destroyed that family. It was really sad. John was incredibly selfish and not mentally sound. He just couldn't deal with the notoriety and opportunities. This was a very small sliver of the story of the Evangelical movement from the 60's to the 90's. It was really the land of misfit toys. It would make a hell of a book. In the early days, John was pretty close to a 'Get out the snakes'-type of travelling preacher, but he had a slick look that was kind of like Robert Wagner. It was fire and brimstone from the pulpit, but he was the life of the party away from church. I always remember him smiling except the last time we were around him, which as right before the lid blew off of all this. He wasn't the same guy.

I saw him at a church in the early 80's ..he was guest speaker.. I was about 12 ..he was shaking hands.. he was up on stage and I was standing on the floor reaching up to shake hands.. his eyes lit up and he reached down and lifted me up about the 2 feet to join him on stage.. he hugged me very tight.. my mother was lost in the crowd and finally saw me on stage with him.. she came up and grabbed me away from him.. on the drive home she was telling the others who attended the service with us about it.. they all teased me because the smell of his cologne was so strong on my dress they rolled down the window.. my mother told that story for years!

She also stated to Fletcher and to another man that came on that both of these men had money on the table and were splitting the money in between them. Then she says "I know I saw it, I was there".
