The backlighting was very pretty, but the model's face was dark. It would be better if she had used a reflector to give the model's face better lighting.

An on camera flash fill would be easier when you are working alone without someone to hold a reflector.

Buying a reflector stand also solves that problem. Or using locations with lighter natural reflectors like beach or concrete. Grass is too dark.

I would have used a silver and golden reflector and a speedlight on camera aimed towards reflector to lighten te face and darken the bg a little. Underexpose 1-2 stops. Post edit try to bring out a little detail in the sky and lighten face/shadows. Or just picked a different location with a more interesting background.

I love my Sigma 50/1.4 on my 5DMk2 but sometimes I feel like it's still a little bit too wide. I know Lara Jade and Sue Bryce use the 35 for their shots, but what's your take on it?

nice vid, but why did you shoot @ iso 250? you have enough light! plus you have a full frame sensor that is pretty good at low light! i doute that you needed more brightness in your shot! i have a crop sensor, and when i am shooting portrait shots outside, i usually go for iso 100, if possible, if not, i play with my shutter speed. and the pictures come out very nice. don't get me wrong, i liked ur video, i was just wondering, if i shoot @ iso 100 and the pictures are great, why would you use iso 250, sacrificing neatness for noise? let me kmow, I'm always open for suggestions 😎 ... 👌👏📷

Rattu it can better to underexpose than over with this kind of shoot. Means you keep all the highlight details for later.
@davidfleet

Surely a touch of fill flash or at least a reflector would balance the exposure on the models face out. Obviously this can be brightened in post but why not start out with the correct technique. I only saw one shot where the models face was nicely exposed. This is personal preference and depends upon what you're vision is but for me sidelighting gives much more depth and visual interest if you have the choice.

Hey Jessica! The Photos to this shooting are great! Really like them. I've just got one question about the ISO. Is there a reason you use 200-250 ISO and turn up the shutter speed instead using a lower ISO and a lower shutter speed? Was just wondering(:

At lower ISO or lower shutter speeds the pictures will be washed out, as there's too much direct light entering at that setting(especially in back lit pictures). We won't be able to make out the details of the subject then (:

why not keep the iso at 100
@MarttiSuomivuori
@MarttiSuomivuori 8 жыл бұрын
+YoungBlaze Of Chitown Because Canon image quality only starts to degrade after 640 ISO. Shooting at 100 does not give you any advantage in the grain or anything else over ISO 200. If you go real life, you start actually seeing the difference after you go beyond ISO 800. Sonys and Nikons do even better. For the time being at least.
@YoungBlaze
@YoungBlaze 8 жыл бұрын
i mean im thinkin like keeping the iso at 100 and and just working with the F stop and shutting , i just hate Grain and noise i try to never go over 400 iso and i have a canon
@dallatorretdu
@dallatorretdu 8 жыл бұрын
It really depends how much you crop the image. Nikons can only go as low as ISO 200 as far as I know, my Sony has also ISO 50, never used that setting... Of course, when you zoom 1:1 you can notice a little grain at ISO 300, it's not perfect smooth, but if you cannot keep the shutter speed high enough not to blur the hairs you have no choice! Also most lenses need to be stopped down in order to properly contrast the flare (I'm not sure about those Canon L)

***** hahah awesome I love her! as for the reflector...hmmm never tried that BUT if you're going to use a reflector I would be careful and use the white side, but very slightly and only if you need it! Let's be honest, is there seriously THAT much of a difference between 100 ISO and 250 ISO on a 5D M3...everyone please shut up about that. The beauty of photography is that there is no ONE right method. You do what works for YOU and for YOUR style. Art is subjective. Have your opinion on the final result but stop knit picking how she got there. We all do what works best for us. KZbin turns everyone into an instant troll for some reason and it drives me CRAZY. If you're not making tutorials yourself and you're on here telling her how to make hers then you have no real right. Her whole point is to show you what you can do with a simplistic set-up and not a crap ton of sophisticated gear. Do your thing Jessica! I've got your back.
@googleuser8723
@googleuser8723 8 жыл бұрын
There should be options there....a reflector, ice light, umbrella/speedlight....so that you can determine as the light changes what to do. The one-approach thing is lazy. I assume this is just to demonstrate one-approach. It would have been nice to see the final product though.

Try lowering your aperture. Not sure how low yours can go with that lens, I recently bought a 50mm 1.8 and it allows a smaller area of focus therefore blurring the background.

+David Lotomau uh no. She wants to capture are very shallow depth of field by shooting at F2.0. But F2.0 lets in very much light so she compensates by using a super fast shutter speed (1/6400) to create the perfect exposure for her F2.0 aperture setting.

When you mention going into manual focus mode is it an issue with that particular lens or the cameras focus system not being able to find its target with so much light shining at it? I've shot some images in almost direct sunlight such as this but the autofocus on my D300 hasn't given me trouble when I need to find my subject.
@morgankeith6015
@morgankeith6015 7 жыл бұрын
There's enough light there to not have your iso at 250. Sure, it's not that big of a deal but when you are in more tricky situations, you want to be able to know the lowest possible iso you can use to get the least amount of grain possible from the camera, instead of having more work to do in post. Also, these photos were way too flat and boring, in my opinion. Would have been much better if you got in closer with some of the shots and exposed for the background and then used flash to fill in your subject to get the best of both worlds, instead of constantly getting that high key look, which definitely can work extremely well if used correctly and artistically. Also, learn how to expose properly against the sunlight. Your camera's light meter is getting confused when it sees all the white light in the scene and thinks it should be mid grey, which is what the camera is programmed to think. These pictures are way too underexposed, so lower your shutter speed more to allow more light in. It should be pretty apparent when your shutter speed is ridiculously fast, also aided by your really wide aperture.
@EngineFD223
