His way of thinking was amazing, he calls humans selfish, he also gets persecuted by the government because it doesn't agree with what he says; pretty relatable. I mean he's a guy that knows a lot to be honest, if you think the idea of being homeless, and being persecuted is something humanity can't relate, think again. He knows us really well, even as an agnostic, I find it amusing the fact that he knows us well!

A religious institution is just another institution, every institution's failures are the result of humans and their pride to be better than others. No human in any institution has ever completely followed its institution's rules, an individual's failure is not necessarily an institution's failure because an individual can and will act out of self-interest.

As a Christian myself, I would say this video was quite insightful and speaks to the human condition along lines that those outside of my religion can understand and connect with; my faith motivates (or at least should) to love others, and if my religion is ever intended to harm or condemn others, then I'm doing it wrong. To model Jesus Christ means to live like Him, and to treat others as He treated them. I will never be as good as that, but in setting that standard for myself, I will always be able to strive to try and be that good, despite my flaws as a human being. May God bless those who were touched by this video, that they may do good to those around them, neighbor and enemy alike.

Religions, whether they are real or not, should be viewed as spiritual ways meant to educate people rather than a way to punish them, or as ways for us human beings to find inner peace and get rid of the everyday's anxiety, for the sake of an example, and of course, far from any form of violence that some religions usually suggest in their scriptures. The human being isn't just a biological existence meant to run after "desires" and "needs", the human being's real "needs" are more complicated than that, a human being, needs a language, a culture, and also a spirituality, whether the existence of God is real or not, no one can deny the spiritual side we all tend to have, and the fear of the unknown that we all have within us as well.

Olga Marinho Actually that’s exactly what it sounds like you were saying. And let’s face it...Wilde was an amazing writer, but he was pretty...out there. And I don’t just mean in an out of the closet way. So the fact he rattled on about Jesus (who was basically to blame for his imprisonment as much as any real person) when he was miserable, starved and living in squalor is no shock. Though I REALLY think you misunderstand what he said. In the letter, which was to his male lover and far from his best work in my eyes, he doesn’t claim he found Christ through his suffering as you seem to imply. Quite the opposite. He basically said Christ was an exception to all the rules, as he believed he should be. And that one could only find true happiness after they’ve experienced suffering. And that he only had “faith” in that which he could see and touch. He basically called for agnostics (and likely atheists as well) to form a community like those seen in churches. To form a community and celebrate and believe in the true. Or you we can just read the word “Christ” and cream our panties.

Guess Who Most of you are like, "I like Jesus as a philosopher" and "you don't have to be religious..." but you don't even understand why He did what He did. You are treating this like a bag of trail mix, you can't just pick and choose what you like from it. Jesus did what He did to save souls because of the love that God has for us. That's why He said and did what He did and He was even willing to die for all of us, sin and all not just parts of us. So how are you going to choose parts of the Gospel?
@victorcates93306 жыл бұрын
it's interesting how the message has become white noise to people, when clearly this message was and should continue to be revolutionary. Even something simple like the parable of the good samaritan if you treat it seriously is a huge moral challenge. Then there's all the stuff about money (rich men and camels, overturning tables). Ridiculing people who make public displays of rectitude. Regarding a thought as being effectively murder (he who hates his brother...). If you think about it, it's pretty incendiary.

Jesus didnt preach kindness but a pure heart and powerful mindset which pleases God. Muslims are kind, Hindus and Sikhs are kind. But they are not encouraged to love haters. Jesus went above and beyond the aspect of kindness. Its incredibly difficult to follow Jesus teachings this is why the maximum amount of people that will be saved is around 25% per cent. That is according to Jesus doctrine. But it is highly and most likely less than 25%. If Jesus was another philosopher then His teachings wouldnt have much impact in the world. But His teachings forces people to be either for or against Him. That is how powerful His teaching and calling was and is.

The fact that some people use it to nurture the hatred and fear of what's different on their inside, is hardly a reason to dismiss its value
@TheStarBlack6 жыл бұрын
That would be absolutely fine if we hadn't had religious zealots* dehumanising, torturing and murdering non-believers through the entire course of religious history. @OperationBaboon6 жыл бұрын
@DSofia A, being a psychologist does not qualify you to make such statement - go into anthropology for that. I can assure you religion came from the fear of death, then to explain life and everything, and as a social equalizer. it's main function was to align how reality is perceived and to create social cohesion, in times when we moved from small tribes to larger settlements. before that, religion was primarily animalistic and about superstition. "The fact that some people use it to nurture the hatred and fear of what's different on their inside, is hardly a reason to dismiss its value" If you mean the fact that religion - especially abrahamic traditions - are responsible for more murder, death and mayhem throughout history, then any other human invention? Then I would say, absolutely reason to dismiss it. While religion may have some social and emotional value, there are many things that can be substituted for religion and get the same effect, without all the lies, pretend, murder and hate.

It wouldn't be Christianity without the divinity of Christ. It would be much more akin to gnosticism which Christianity is very much in opposition to it. Paul the apostle and the Church at Nicea would be evidence of their firmness against this type of idea.

itsasin1969 angry much? Maybe you got it wrong when it comes to dying. Yes I have read the Bible many times. First time I finished it was at 4. I also read anything I can get my hands on. I love studying religion & philosophy. I own books from most major religions. The common underlying message that I see isn’t the one you’re portraying. Your view is skewed to your personal understanding & mine to my understanding. What people do is a choice, no matter what they claim to have made them do it. I have had many near death experiences & while many think they can say what causes it, there is so much more to it than science has yet to explain & “my God” is not the one you describe. That’s mans general idea of god. Anyway, I believe this body & life isn’t as important as the next. It’s an experience & science is starting to understand the strangeness of our reality & the energy of consciousness might not actually be what we think it is. Check out quantum consciousness & consciousness quantum death sometime. There are many wonderful scholarly articles about it.

When I was a Christian I always felt an overwhelming need to figure out the world, learn the gifts of the spirit, shun human nature. I was miserable, caught between lukewarm faith and serious guilt. I finally made the choice last year during the eclipse to throw everything out the window and start over. Accepting that it's impossible to know everything. Seeing deities, specifically Jesus, as ascended masters with wisdom and knowledge to give. Understanding that we are on a rock hurtling through space, space that none of us could even fathom a percentile of its reach. That we are small and insignificant, yet meticulously placed in time exactly where we are supposed to be, for a short time. That we will cease to function, our bodies going back to the earth and our molecules living infinitely in some form. These things have given me peace.
@midixx3606 жыл бұрын
So basically we all are “sinners” and therefore not in the position to judge about others. That’s a great way to qualify the commandments and lever out any moral judgment. But as we realize that Sin is just another human made construct and not god given and not a truth, we have to develop our own ethic values and laws as we already did using our cognitive abilities to aspire a behavioral codex which serves a progressive society.
@kristogirma83196 жыл бұрын
mindia thank you for pointing out we are all sinners. To view your self as a sinner is a hard thing to do. As you know we become "sinners", deserving of judgment, when we break the law, whether you believe it's God's law or human law. Before dismissing God's Law is good thinking to ask, what is the difference between God's and human law? When answering my suggestion is to look at Jesus teaching on the matter in Matthew 5:27-30. And when you consider yourself in light of God's law, don't be afraid remembering that it is the law that judges but Jesus did not come to judge the world but to save the world, belive and repent. Whoever you are, wherever you are I send to you the love I have received.

Or....you can view Jesus is warning us agaisnt self righteousness. Do not think you're inherently better than those who've crimed. For we all had definitely done some people wrong in the past. Yet, The Bible also tells us to follow the law of the land many times. I find a contradiction here, in that some sections of The Bible call for us to follow the law, but here Christ heroically defies it. Are we to defy the law to have mercy on others? How do you know when that's the right decision? I'd guess the correct conclusion is that it's circumstantial. The flaw of the Pharisees was that they always followed the law to the T. Christ told people not to sin and serves as the final judge, so he doesn't save everyone. Yet, laws change over time... Where it was once criminal to smoke marijuana, it's now an ordinary pastime. I guess the goal here is to not follow the law blindly, but to instead be a compassionate, thoughtful judge of when it is best to do so.

I am currently a Roman Catholic on paper, but I now practice agnostic deism (god doesn't intervene) and existentialism. I still cling unto believing on meaning and purpose, even though I acknowledge that the meaning that I give in life is pointless and just a delusion to my inevitable death and oblivion, but still I want to practice the words of Jesus, not because I want to have miracles, blessings or to go to heaven, I just want to make a more utilitarian/altruistic approach in life. Nothing really matters to me anymore in the bigger picture, but my good deeds matter a lot to people when I volunteer, do some charities or simply do something magnanimous. I no longer follow religion that much because I don't really want to blindly follow other people, believe in superstitions and false hopes, I just want to have my own autonomous existential path/ freedom despite the meaninglessness. If there are such things such as theistic and atheistic existentialism, I might actually call myself an agnostic- deistic existentialist, and not a nihilist. I retain a bit of theism by believing in god because of Aquinas stating the analogical predicament, pascal's wager, and my thought that maybe god created the absurd to test our faiths, (for me, the bible is just a guide, and religion is simply just a fan club) but because I am just probably biased on thinking that an intervening god exists because I am honestly afraid of death and oblivion and wish to believe in an afterlife, I still embrace atheism's denial of miracles, divine intervention and an afterlife to be a bit more rational and to further appreciate my ephemeral life. However, if I die and god and heaven does exist, but I rejected religion, but still devoted a life to benevolence, I only hope that his "omnibenevolence" will forgive my heresy. I also think that I am an existentialist and not a nihilist, because though I acknowledge the overall cosmic meaninglessness, I delude myself with meaning, god and purpose because thinking of the meaninglessness is just as meaningless as well.

I've actually started to notice that a couple stories in the bible have an anti- self-righteousness message, that is if you just take them as stories and not as literal history. Some examples. 1.Jonah would rather kill himself by jumping into the sea while proclaiming himself to be a "True Follower of God" in an act of self-righteousness, instead of telling his enemies that God will forgive them. So God sends a giant fish to swallow him and keep him alive until he swallows his pride and does what's right 2.Job can be see as a warning to not be judgemental of those who are suffering, like his 3 self-righteous freinds who keep accusing him of commenting a horrible sin which they believe must be the "real" reason why God is "punishing" him. When in reality poor Job was just the victim of a wager and did nothing wrong beside from once thinking like his freinds. Warning us that bad things can happen to good people for unexplainable or unfair reasons and not to assume that suffering is always at the fault of the one who suffers. 3.David and Samson let their power go to their heads and they both fall from grace. Both stories have Mighty Men who start off approved by God and are even given great power by him, but they start to think of themselves as invincible, believing that God will allow no harm to come to them. This self-righteous idea leads both men unable to see themselves becoming arrogant, corrupt, reckless, consume with lust and overly violent, which in the end brings them both down.

Lucas Galahad And on the other hand, when the focus is entirely on 'Jesus is God', the message and teachings of Jesus go almost entirely neglected and misunderstood by his worshippers, because they are unaware that he taught or philosophized. Jesus instructed to *do what he taught* in order to find the kingdom of God. Just verbally stating your belief that he is divine does not fulfill his teachings. He was teaching how to transform your mind and heart in order to find God inside you, and that takes effort and experience. And, viewing him as an historical figure often replaces the importance of the message with the worship of the messenger, as well as diminishing the message as it applies to our lives right now in the present. So, it's ok to consider all sides of this story.
