A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

This version will always have a special place in my heart as it was my first introduction to this show. I would watch it alongside the Donny Osmond version of Joseph while I was recovering from back surgery. I also adore Jerome who is just the loveliest of humans and was incredible in the role despite all that was working against him (language barrier, vocal range, etc).

I feel like this actor portrays Judas really well, for instance his facial expressions and physical movements. I personally think he is great and I actually think it is cool when he strains his voice it sounds really good x just my opinion 😄

Yeah, he is really a baritone and had difficulties taking on the higher notes, but managed to pull it off somehow.

He really didn't pull it off. What's the point with casting someone in a musical if they can't sing their part? This should have both good acting and singing but Pradon's tone is really irritating.

his acting is good but his pitch is flat so many times throughout the whole show that it pulls me out of the story. The singing is just as important as the acting. The singing IS the acting. It's a rock opera.

I'd say hes at first like, lawful neutral. His goals were to help the poor, people who were sick, and Jesus. But as time went on he got more chaotic when Jesus didn't listen to him. Either way Judas is cool lol

It's sad how tame and restrained all new versions of the musical are, all the way from this one to the very newest. Good singers for sure, every single one of them, but where's the soul, grit and sheer power of the original voices? I think the only way to do it justice nowadays would be to get an ensemble of metal vocalists to do the job, since that's where all the talent and artistic honesty went. It's a 70s thing for Christ's sake. Make it rock!!!

Jerome is amazing as Judas he plays the part better
@luchadorito
@luchadorito 8 жыл бұрын
+Ellie Corstorphine its strange...everyone is nuts about how much better he is...I think he is way too overpolished and overplayed. Carl was a lot more primitive and raw and that made it more emotional. And that goes pretty much to the whole 2000 version. Pilate and Kaiafas look like Disney villains, Jesus comes of as a jerk, Judas as completely crazy, Herod in the '73 version was an oligarch with a sick twisted perverted sense of humor and taste, here he is just weird.
@elliecorstorphine
@elliecorstorphine 8 жыл бұрын
luchadorito why do you think that all of the actor's are much better singers
@luchadorito
@luchadorito 8 жыл бұрын
+Ellie Corstorphine well...i don't know what you mean by better...in the '73 movie most of the actors where professional broadway actors but they kinda half assed it on purpose which made it sound more raw and in yo face. Here they are also professionals but i think its overpolished. Too much perfectly hit long high notes, vibrato and definietely too much conceptuality. Even the flaws in their performance appear to be calculated. This to me makes the '73 movie a lot more relatable. Also the instrumentation there sounds outstandingly...70s which is something i always loved. It has all of the decade's typical musical traits from excessive piano usage in rock, hammond organs left and right, the bass and electric guitar tones, the string and brass usage of the 60s and early 70s movie soundtracks. To me that is just a huge upside for that version. But then again, i could go on for hours about its superiority but its all a matter of personal taste. Whiyh one do you overall prefer btw?

"Jesus, your wife beater and cargo pants make you stand out too much! What could you possibly be carrying in those pockets because, honestly, they definitely look full of who knows what. Maybe go and get some nice fatigues like Simon? You can still rock the wife beater that way. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a lunch date with Dennis Rodman and Dane Cook. You do you, just don't get us in trouble."

I'm not sure if you saying that they have accomplished that semblance of the operatic style or not. I just watched it again and was imagining if I would like it a lot more if I wasn't already so familiar with the original. It is a great song, there's no question about it. This version doesn't mask that. But Murray Head and then Carl Anderson in the touring show really sang this song in the definitive way, imo. It doesn't sound right to me without the grit and the edginess. It's a "rock" opera.

So much hate towards the 2000 version! The elements come together in their own way, which made this version a tremendous success at the time. Some aspects of the acting are better in the 2000 version than the original version, like Judas' singing. For a baritone, he quite cleverly disguised some of the strain that he had to be feeling when he sang this. Some aspects of the original will forever outclass any remake, such as the set design not being on a stage. Those are just examples from each, but none of the acting or singing in any version is terrible by any means.

Mariah MacNeely No. it doesn’t. They are portraying ALW’s take on Judas that they are friends but Judas feels he has to do something to stop Jesus’s preachings because it’s causing the Romans to crack down hard on the Christians and he doesn’t want them getting hurt anymore. He’s a realist, unlike the rest of Jesus’s followers who are blinded by his “miracles” and see Israel through rose-tinted glasses.

For starters, the electric guitar tone is way off--the backing track can be mind blowing with the right guitar and amp choice, and here it sounds like the guitarist thinks that any old grunge guitar tone will do. And then the voices drive me nuts. The orig. JCS soundtrack (just remastered 2012) is like a great Beatles album--totally awesome. This production seems like a parody--it's like a Beatles album re-recorded by David Bowie tribute singers--painful to listen to. Tones and voices are key.

I don't think it's particularly bad, but it's not that great either. Judas often sounds like he's straining his voice, and it's pretty obvious near the end of the show. And the overacting is a bit distracting though judas isn't one of the MAIN offenders there
@Imperatrixxy

Yes, Jerome Pradon, who plays Judas, is actually a baritone and just barely managed to perform the role. But I really wouldn't call him overacting. I see most people act that way every day in regular conversations.

I really Like the 2000 Version of the movie and like almost all of the actors, but I really don't like Judas in this movie. He isn't a really a good singer and his acting ist really odd but not in a good way Like it's the case with Pilate. Especially "Heaven on their minds" and "Superstar" are downright painful to watch, which were my favorites in the old version of JCS.
