When they're celebrating with love, Jesus is smiling, but when they mention having "a touch of hate for Rome," his expression becomes concerned, following the philosophy of love over hate, even where enemies are concerned.
@NavyPharmD
@NavyPharmD 4 жыл бұрын
Precisely why this scene is so powerful. Neely has no dialogue and yet he doesn't need it. Once Simon goes from fanatical love to "If you can add a TOUCH of hate at Rome, we can have ourselves a home" is when Jesus starts to appreciate Judas' warning in "Heaven On Their Minds" (we are getting MUCH too loud). By the end when Simon is putting emphasis on YOU get the power and YOU get the glory, Jesus' face becomes absolutely sour; once again Judas was right from "Heaven on Their Minds" (YOU'VE begun to matter more than the things you say). Listen Jesus, I don't like what I see.

@@NavyPharmD I don't think your reading of this scene is correct. Jesus doesn't appreciate Judas' warning when Simon says that, he simply reacts negatively after understanding the lowly motivations of Simon and the zealots, which happens exactly after Simon asks him to add hate towards Rome in his speech. It's the contradiction between the request and Jesus' philosophy that makes Jesus react that way, I don't think it has anything to do with Jesus appreciating Judas' warning about "being too loud" at all. Jesus takes issue with the request (professing hate towards Rome), not with how loud it's being said. Jesus loudly professes love in front of the Pharisees in "Hossana"; and in the first part of this song, even though there are romans there, he is not trying to hide neither himself nor the zealots; he is happy with them until they ask him to hate in order to pursue a political goal. He looks at Judas incidentally, as he was there and he also disagrees (although he disagrees for different reasons); not as some sort of reference to "Heaven on their minds". And after he starts singing, he says "Nor Judas [...] understand what power is, understand what glory is", so Jesus is certainly not in agreement with him.

@thetreacherousleech8990
@thetreacherousleech8990 4 жыл бұрын
@@youngrepublican7202 Alright. In this musical (again no corelation to the biblical story I look at them seperately) Judas was a man who followed jesus due to wanting to help people in small ways not for any political agenda or personal gain. Now however they managed to get a sort of cult following, an obsessive following. This wouldn't be a problem, however as it stands at this moment they are at a very fragile time and place due to the romans having taken over. Thusly even if jesus doesn't make this a political movement other people will probably do it in his name, which can be seen through this number for example with the Followers growing impatient and the anger showing through demanding to march against the romans right? This is in many ways something inevitable because of the growing hatred for rome and their injustices. However as it stands if it was to come to a confrontation between rome and the jews rome would win, after all it is a massive highly weaponized force symbolised by the jets and the tanks in damned for all time. So now you have a choice: If Jesus continues the way they are going right now it will probably lead to a revolt that will cost a lot of lives and that they most likely cannot win. That's what heaven on their mind is about. Jesus is slowly becoming a political symbol for rebellion something judas is trying to warn him about and rome has noticed their activity as a group which is why he is worried about his image as well since they're already looking for an excuse to take them down. Now I think the only way Judas knew to stop a revolt and prevent the bloodshed was to give jesus up. Plus again he didn't come here to be political but to help the people in small ways. That's how I view Judas in this musical. Plus since Jesus seemingly ignores him in heaven on their mind he might feel like Jesus has already become political himself as well especially after his outrage at the temple. Plus it worked. Jesus was a scapegoat and they didn't attack the romans. (Anyway that's probably a bit too detailed whoops.)

that's an amazing observation. the entire number is so intense but the profound artistry kicks into high gear at 3:30 when it's clear the Zealots want a home plus they're craycray about it, even if that means using Christ for their plans which God firmly didn't allow. "Game Of Thrones" really had zilch on the triumphant story that happened in real 1st Century.

@@sinistar99 I understand what you are thinking. The truth is there. I have read the entire Bible a number of times, have studied it inductively, especially the four Gospels . There is no doubt that Jesus fulfilled something close to 300 Old Testament prophecies and there were over 400 witnesses to His resurrection and ascension to Heaven. There is a force, Satan that does a good job, for now, keeping the truth obscured by questioning and some idea that we can create our own religion and faith and be all the same. But not all religions even claim to be equal to God and His son, sent for payment of OUR sins. I can attest that God's way for me IS better, and it IS better for all: Repent from our personal sins and admit that those ways lead to death and misery. Pray for help to believe, the BELIEVE AND FOLLOW Jesus Christ. The movie gets a number of things wrong, mostly through excluding important facts that change the narrative: 1.) The MOST important thing isn't that Jesus Died, but that He died AND was resurrected on the third day after just as he said he would. 2)He was GOD come to Earth as man. He and His Father are the same yet separate...a mystery of the Trinity to be revealed to all someday. 3) When he was approached by lepers he WAS enough. He NEVER said anything like the movie said. 4) Jesus ministry portrayed without the miracles He performed with NUMEROUS eyewitnesses is a means to draw to question whether he was God. The scriptures speak of NUMEROUS miracles, not one was shown here. IT MATTERS. 5) There is NO evidence that Mary Magdalene had a sexual love for Jesus...it was not the case. To lead anyone to believe Jesus might have taken advantage of a sexual relationship is WRONG. It is packaged in a way to mislead, but in such so they can deny that attempt to create a love story. Don't get me wrong! This IS a the greatest love story of all time: for you me, and yes, Mary...but NOT the same type of love: something deeper, something no one else can ever give us.

The film has such a special atomasphere to it. Wonderful. Recently saw it here in London for 2 years running in Regents Park open air theatre and seeing the same production (this time in doors) this year 2019 in London. The same production played in 2018 in the Chicago Opera House and was totally sold out as it was in the UK. It goes on in many different forms/productions as the music and lyrics and the pacing of the script are so strong. I have even seen it live sung in Japanese and it was wonderful.

Love this! What voices! What dancers! The energy with the sand being kicked up and heat...Just phenomenal.-I always loved how all races were represented in this rock opera It was cool to stage it in the Holy Land and incorporate items from Jesus day with the present (1973). For example, the Roman soldiers carried spears and automatic weapons.

This song represents one of the 3 times in the Bible that the devil tempted Jesus, in this case with (political) power. When the posessed Simon sings "Keep them yelling their devotion, but add a touch of hate at Rome...", you can see Jesus' expression change from enjoyment to disappointment and dismay. Simon continues "You'll get the power and the glory, lord...", and Jesus answers him in the next song "Poor Jerusalem". He sings "Neither you, Simon, nor the fifty-thousand..." etc. "... understand what power is, understand what glory is...". Jesus repudiates the devil's temptation, maintains his covenant with God, and continues on his path to the cross.

What Simon feeds Jesus beginning at 3:21 is how I picture manipulative advisors act toward well intentioned Politicians.Not all politicians start out scandalous, I'd like to believe most start with good intentions. Somewhere along the way, they cut a shady deal to push their agenda and then another and another until well intentions are lost through all the shade. In this case, Simon represents the shady deal and Jesus the well-intentioned Politician.
