YOU HAVE THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO. SPOT-ON.
@racerex3403 жыл бұрын
@@WarpedYT yeah, I was thinking the same, people don't realize that the jet mount like that is a giant lever, the further the distance bring the thrust from the fulcrum, the more that force is multiplied at the fulcrum. The amount of extra reinforcing required just to raise the turbines by a foot would have been extraordinary, probably would have had no choice but to go through the trunk and bumper with additional tubing, also complicating any mechanism for raising and lowering the turbines up and down going in and out of the airstream. Amazing build Matt, I know that you only showed maybe 1% of what went into this, extraordinary!

Jet engines work by sucking air into the front of the engine using a fan. From there, the engine compresses the air, mixes fuel with it, ignites the fuel/air mixture, and shoots it out the back of the engine, creating thrust, without enough air going in there would not be enough thrust to push the car .

Very interesting rig up. In order to prevent the engine 'flaming out' you need to prevent inducing stalling (or surge) on the jet engine's compressor. Right behind the car, the negative pressure or air flow separation off of the trunk lid is cutting the air mass-in via tangential intake of air into the engine. Check the jet engine's compressor stall curve and see how much air should be supplied AXIALLY. Again, congratulation on your successful 'take off'

It's a start... More reinforcing, upgrade the middle engine to match the two end engines, maybe upgrade all three in the future. It would be more impressive on a lighter gas powered 2wd car that normally struggles with traction, the fact that it helps at all on one of the quickest performing 0-60 production cars in history shows that it's a serious kit. If Matt could ever upgrade this to double or triple the thrust over time, the performance would be much more impressive on a P85

I like that you strapped jet engines to the back of a Tesla as to off set your carbon foot print. Thats just science.
@noneentered13 жыл бұрын
I'm betting the drag coefficient is lowered significantly by adding all that airflow into the dead zone, greatly reducing the normal suction of the air coming back together around the back of the car. The increase in performance at speed will tell the tale, he already knows the static thrust generated by the engines, so if the performance increase is greater, it's the reduction in drag. It would be awesome to see a wind tunnel test with the jet exhaust on vs. off.
@WarpedYT3 жыл бұрын
I had thought about that.. when the engines were idling while starting them up and the car was in drive cruising about 70 mph, there was significantly less drag, there is a consumption meter on the dash that shows how much power is going to the wheels at any given time usually it's about 30 to 40,000 w cruising at 70 mph, when the engines were idling it was about 10 to 15,000 Watts... Very interesting, additionally I was thinking when I was designing it that making a sort of dovetail to bring air into the engines from the back of the car would definitely get rid of that whole dead zone and the drag coefficient would drop quite a bit

The engines may starve or not get enough air, because at the end/back of the car (going at speed) is a partial vacuum. Therefore the flame-out is not surprising. That was my first thought (air starvation in a partial vacuum area) when I saw the mounting of the engines without an airduct going to the engines, say, from the roof of the car.

I thought the exact same thing before even viewing his run. Losing engine performance entirely.
@ejkk95132 жыл бұрын
He perfectly explained why he didn't do that. The windmilling of the turbine without lubrication (while off) would damage bearings and wear out those very expensive engines. The two side engines are much larger, more powerful and alot more expensive.

@Dyanosis2 жыл бұрын
Considering his are miniature and the ones on planes are massive in comparison... yes, they are QUITE powerful. Especially the difference between a dual and quad engine plane (dual for same coast or close flights and quad for cross country or over seas). I love the quad engines. Feeling all 4 engines spool up and then ramp up for full power for take-off is awesome.

@@WarpedYT The 3 wipers going to the ADC of the arduino to generate the PWM signal is pretty cool. I program everything in Micropython so I make my life harder by using ESP32 chips with a really bad ADC lol. so for the most part I wind up using an I2C external ADC.
