I had an idea for electric cars that's similar to what you did. Instead of mounting the engine in the car, instead mount it in a light trailer along with the fuel and the radiator. That way you only need to tow the diesel engine when you need range extension. You can also get an engine that's the perfect size and have a larger diesel tank while minimizing noise and modifications to your car. A Coleman Caboose trailer is kind of the size I was thinking but obviously made out of something more heat resistant.

@WarpedPerception Obviously, you're a brilliant man, and you know what you're doing, but I have some thoughts. To GREATLY reduce noise, first I'd line the entire generator enclosure with sound absorbing material. Then make a large airbox also lined with sound absorbing mat to abate induction noise. Then in place of those tiny straight through mufflers, get a couple of inexpensive large volume mufflers like Walker Quiet-Flow SS 21548, and use a regular exhaust pipe rather than that trumpet. Also, cooling, cooling, cooling. I'd have a fairly large volume fan to circulate air around the generator especially on the hot side in addition to a large radiator. You may have a saleable commercial product on your hands if you were to make a tow behind trailer with a portable diesel generator capable of providing enough power for level two charging, and a decently large fuel tank. You've obviously figured out the charge as you go aspect. Are you using the regenerative braking software & hardware? If I lived in south Florida, such a rig would be great insurance in case you had to run from a hurricane. Bonus, you could use it as a emergency house generator the rest of the time.

That's 19.53km/L, or using 5.12L per 100km, is just-on $10 AUD of diesel ($1.96 AUD/L) per 100km of travel where I live. Honestly; that's pretty damn impressive considering the mass of the AWD Tesla and the reduced aerodynamics to have the cutout for the engine's exhaust in the boot, plus the running of the engine overnight to recharge the battery instead of hooking up to the grid.

So, couple things I'd have done different 1. I'd have used a 2wd model to build on. Less weight by having less electric motors means it would be more efficient 2. I'd have routed the exhaust under the trunk to come out where a tail pipe would traditionally be. I'm concerned that there was extra drag 3. That coolant pipe running under the car should have been tucked under the skirt. A few spacers wouldn't have worked with the undercoat? Overall, a very cool build. I hope that next time the ancillary gauges get setup in a more clean fashion. Please take your time on version 4.0!

You are on the right track with your ideas about a hybrid car. The whole issue with current hybrids is they kept the engine and transmission and drive train, ( kinda dumb if you ask me). The best scenario would be in my opinion is all electric drive, ( like tesla), with an inverter generator similar to the Onan Cummins generator in our class A motorhome. They are built like a tank, designed to run thousands of hours, and are extremely quiet, ( we cannot hear ours running at all when we are in the motorhome, or when on the passenger side, ( where people hang out under the awning). Ours has an autostart feature, so when the house batteries get low, it automatically starts itself, ( anytime day or night as needed), and recharges the house battery bank. Ours is gas, and uses 1/2 gallon per hour of gas, ( measured). And with our 80 gallong gas tank on the motorhome, that’s enough gas to easily run most of the day every day for about a week, ( or around $15 dollars a day average). We live in hot sunny south Florida, so we need to run all our air conditioners nearly 24/7, just to keep the bus cool enough to survive. Down here with the ac off in the sun the bus gets over 100 degrees inside in about an hour, and the humidity is over 90% inside with no air running, ( mold growth is a huge issue down here, if we store the rig without the air running, or humidity control, the entire inside grows mold everywhere in around 2 weeks. Down here forget about opening any windows at night, the lows are in the mid 80’s, and the humidity always goes up to around 90% at night. I’m not specifically suggesting putting an Onan generator in your car, I’m only suggesting a similar operational concept. You can get them either in Diesel or gas, and I would think around a 7,000 to 10,000 watts generator would do the job. Ours is only 12 volts, but I’m pretty sure 24 or 48 volt versions are available. The Onan units come complete, with everything contained in one box, ( typically green). And most motorhomes mount the generator in a slide out drawer in the front or back, ( for easy service). A working scenario would be drive to work, park in a parking lot, and if the battery needs charging, the generator automatically starts, and charges up the main bank, ( which could be smaller than an all electric car would normally need). I feel you have the right concept, but trying to retrofit into an already existing car is a bit of a stretch. The main reason I think why all hybrids have a regular gas engine and drive train, is that is the tradition, and all the manufacturers can think of to do, ( not very bright in my opinion). Gas stations won’t be going away anytime soon, ( maybe in 50 yrs or so), there is one on every corner in the us and that won’t change anytime soon. Running generator at max efficiency, ( only when needed), is way more environmentally friendly and clean, and much more fuel efficient than using the gas engine in stop and go traffic, and constant acceleration, from stop signs. I would foresee the generator running less than 50% of your driving time, verses now where primary propulsion from the gas engine on hybrids is likely 90% of the time, and much less fuel efficient. Just my two cents.

Now it needs reliability. Gotta engineer it like Toyota.
@fZionists785 ай бұрын
Step one- Make it a gutless rattletrap. Step two- Make it less efficient and handle horribly. Two steps closer to Toyota. “Toyota reliability” is the lack of engineering. The absence of comfort, performance, and advancements. Reliability can only be measured against similar performance. I suppose Ford could remove the twin turbos from their 3.5 ecoboost, replace the 10-speed with a 4, cheapen up the chassis, and strive for 3 star safety ratings. Then F150s would last as long and be as useless as a “reliable” Tacoma. Anyone can produce cheaply made reliable commuter cars. Most drivers/customers demand more. Hence why Toyota is ditching their reliable, gutless, gas guzzling v8 and copying the ecoboost. When a vehicle isn’t nearly as comfortable, fast, well handling, capable of doing the work etc., reliability can’t be compared.

Could we get information about how the charging is done. So electrical connection between generator and the car?
@jrockvan73044 ай бұрын
There is none. It’s magic.

Direct connections right to the battery via fused disconnect? You’d have to have some kind of a runaway fuse safety to ensure that the whole car doesn’t like blow up or burn up.

@Blaquer175 ай бұрын
@@WarpedYT Yeah, public charging is sort of a luxury item, like premium gas for your luxury or performance car. The primary advantage of battery electric is actually the ability to charge more cheaply at home... or with a diesel generator in your trunk.

What’s your electric efficiency in that? My model y is 300 wh/mile. I assume yours closer to 400 wh/mile. Does the engine need to be that big to generate that kind of electricity?

@@mcsike7264 what I’m referring to in my comment was energy consumption. I have a model 3 and a model y. Model 3 is around 250 watt hours per mile. Model y is closer to 300. What I’m asking is the size of a generator needed to generate that many watts in a mile, which would be roughly one minute. I’m also looking for how many watts hours per mile his would be - which should be much more than mine given the motor size and power. But to answer your question. Yes - a much higher % of energy goes into the actual push of the wheels than an ICE engine, which loses a ton of its energy in the form of friction loss which generates heat.

PS You probably saw this but in the engine videos near the end, there's a loose hose clamp the looks like it's supposed to connect parts of the exhaust header. That could be your smoke/noise source.

Brilliant work! I have a Prius Prime plug-in and love that I don't have to worry about charging stations. This is really the best of both worlds. Can fast charge when you'd like, or use gas when you need to. The Prius has 30 miles on battery which covers about 75% of my usage. Might be a lot easier to start with a hybrid and make a connection in the trunk to add more batteries. If you loaded the trunk and back seat of the Prius up with batteries maybe you could get to 300 miles on a charge.
