My first duty assignment in the USAF was to the 9th SRW, Beale AFB, Ca., in 1975. Watching this video brings back a memory or two - the 'blackbird' and the U-2, 'Habu!' I started in supply but 'cross trained' into medical and moved to the flight surgeons office in '80. While there, I worked with, a then, Lt. Col. Carl A. Haller (R.I.P), who had been a blackbird pilot until a mishap ended his flying career. He then went to medical school and became a flight surgeon. BTW Harris, you’re right, the blackbird was a two seat plane - pilot and RSO/navigator. There were also special double cockpit ‘B’ training models; they had 1 cockpit stacked behind and over the other. Anyway, it's impressive to see what these hobbyists were able to do.

9 years to make, knowing it could come falling out of the sky at any moment. That's a lot of dedication and free time.

Absolutely amazing!!! As I read some of the ignorant comments below, it became very clear that some people have no understanding of "passion" or "commitment" in one's life. To be able to create something that brings joy & possibly inspiration to others, should be celebrated rather than ridiculed . Thank you for posting it.

When I was a little kid I would go watch these guys fly their little RC Planes at a Forest Preserve in Chicago. This Plane is amazing and "Hats Off" to the gentlemen who built it. That is called talent and time well spent.

I was flying over plant 42 and I looked out the cockpit window and there was a SR 71 on a long final, beautiful, just beautiful.

Imagine the planes now that 3D-printers exist... How much easier it will be to produce these home-made parts

I did not expect that plane to fly so smooth. It is a testament to the quality that went into building such an inherently unstable (at low speeds) platform, and one heck of a stick. Excellent all around! Thank you.

Is it flying through some of the clouds? It complete disappears from sight many times! Might just be camera.
@TheAlucard666210 жыл бұрын
It does fly through clouds a few times , but the silhouette of this model and the real one are almost exact , and the real was designed to very hard to see when it was coming at you and other angles, sideways, from back it was a little easier to see, also from under or above, besides at the speeds it flew, by the time you saw it , it was to late. :)

There was a prototype that has a rear canopy 'ajar' with limited visibility forward. It ended up as piolet trainer. These things are incredible machines, i know I've seen them personally, in operation. This is 50s tech at its finest, the fuel cells are baffled and have gaps in them to compensate for extreme temperatures. When it heats up the fields cells seal. Initial take off uses 'gel' JP4 then refusals not long after take off. The spooks commissioned one at one point armed with 30-06 chain guns. It didn't work of course because the plane ran into the rounds. It's roll as surveillance craft was a default, armed with 11" cameras. Its top speed and real service ceiling is still top secret even though it's been decommissioned over 25 years ago.

Another nice SR. Once they rotate they don't need much push. This one is super realistic in air speed to say nothing for that fabulous hypersonic cone squeal !! Wow, just a wee bit of real estate taken there. He over flew half the WP Museum property. A little further East and he'd have been over the AFB :) This is a great site for the USSMA and WJM. Perhaps some day we can see the FAI F4C there.
