I hated cursive in school as a kid (mid-30s now) but now wish that I had embraced it more. Especially now that 95% of what I write is through a keyboard so my handwriting is atrocious. I think it's even more valuable to teach cursive these days for the sake of penmanship since kids no longer have the same opportunity to naturally develop their handwriting like they would have pre-computers.

I learned cursive in grade school, but college note taking ruined my hand writing. One of the tips on good cursive writing was "write slowly," impossible in a classroom where information is being dumped rapid fire. I enjoyed this video and am going to go back and practice my cursive!
Жыл бұрын
Same for me. I had pretty good handwriting (for a child) until I went to high school where most of the stuff it's dumped into the board at the same time the teacher is talking, and not all teachers are understanding, many will wipe the board as soon as they're done talking. Uni was a bit better because we were expected to do our own research & classes were more of starting point but still had the same issue, not all professors and instructors are patient enough to wait until everyone is done writing.

I was a firefighter in the Navy and part of my job was training other personnel on the ship in basic and advanced fire fighting. I would have to sign all their qualifications. One time, the captain told the whole ship that no one was allowed off the ship at our next port if they weren't basic firefighter qualified. My signature was forever altered from that one command. Within like a 3 day span it changed completely and has been that way since. All cursive.

Practice by copying lyrics of your favorite songs or sentimental ones. I'm particularly fond of A Thousand Years. Feels nice to write, and looks nice on journal's dump pages/page breaks too. Also, if you're still learning/new at cursive, it's true that writing at the "just right" font size is best, but once you're comfortable, functional everyday cursive is allowed to be written at any size. I write at small fonts and they're still readable. Well, unless the pen size I use is bigger than 0.5. It's impossible to write small with big pen sizes. Cursive looks nice when written with a relaxed hand.

I would encourage folks to let go a bit - after they learn the basics. I love handwriting that is unique and even a bit messy! I especially appreciated the hints you gave us of a very personal set of rules and shapes that are invoked for special cases. When I journal, I like to handwrite to keep up with it. I use to have really nice writing all the time but after going to high school it got sloppy bcuz I had to write really fast in order to copy the notes on the board, from the teacher. Before he/she would erase them lol. I had a hard time keeping up bcuz I didn't want my writing to look sloppy....that didn't work lol. I miss having nice and clear handwriting. I really liked when ppl would complement it lol 😝😁

I haven't found any gel pens that write as smoothly for me, with the exception of a Montblanc gel pen that was perfectly balanced and felt like part of my hand. One refill cost as much as 50 Bic Cristals. Generally, ultra fine pens feel like they're scratchy unless I use glossy or ultra fine-fiber paper.
