Join us as we install the HPA Motorsports Hybrid K04 Turbo kit into the Mk5 2.0T Jetta Wolfsburg. We flash the ECU with the Eurodyne K04 Base Map and take the car out for some pulls. What a difference! The car keeps pulling all the way to redline even with the stock intercooler and turbo outlet pipe still in place. This is exactly what the car needed. Enjoy the video! Please like, share, and subscribe :)

I know you guys didn't intend for this to be an instructional video, but it wouldn't have hurt (and probably might save a few people) if you'd mention priming the turbo before firing it up. But kudos for taking on such a daunting project and having the confidence to actually videodocument it.

How much did you lose on the low end? I'm considering going to a K04, but I love the instant, low end torque that I get from my K03. I just wish the K04 could provide that same kind of feeling, with no lag and immediate boost.
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 3 жыл бұрын
It's been a very long time so it's hard to remember. I think you lose a bit but not too much since the ko4 is still small and spools pretty quick. The midrange is way more punchy with a ko4. If you do tight autocross or something the delay might matter to you Im not sure. Hope that helps slightly! The car is in storage right now but I think It pulls hard after 3,000rpm

I'm using this as an instructional video. My k03 went out, so I found a k03 to replace it, with k04 internals, so I'm hoping it'll be fairly straight forward. Seems very similar to replacing a turbo on a 2022 trailblazer (I've done probably 10 to 15 of those, (GM Service Technician)) I couldn't really find any instructional videos on a Jetta though. But once I saw this, I was like, dang heck ya, this will work perfectly. So that's my project this weekend. Hoping everything works out. I have a 2010 Wolfsburg Edition with the 2.0T and DSG. I'm pretty excited to see what kinda extra power it puts down. They said it bumps it up from 200 to 255 without a tune, but I guess we'll see.

On the TSI the stock injectors and high pressure fuel pump are okay, but for the FSI the high pressure fuel pump or pump internals needs an upgrade. Not sure about injectors for FSI. This car was run for a while on the stock intercooler and k04 but the intercooler has since been upgraded

hi guys, this is another great video as i'm planning on removing my turbo. On the Axle part, did you guys fully remove the axle, or you only removed the bolts from the transmission side and was able to move the axle to give room underneath to access the turbo lines? Update: I think after watching over the video, looks like you guys didn't pull the drive shaft all the way. Hmmm...I plan on pulling the turbo from the bottom side so it looks like for mine, i'll have to remove the entire drive shaft to see if I can pull my turbo from the bottom. It's a big turbo also, a Precision 5858. I'm replacing it with the same spec turbo and rebuilding the old one.

I’m scared to even tune my 06 Jetta with a FSI BPY with the mileage I’m at right now... 252,500. I have done some tasteful cosmetic upgrades. Wheels, tint, chrome accents inside the car, mk6 radio, knocked an inch and half off my shifter for reduced throw, rain guards, rear windshield lip, spoiler, resonator delete with a stainless steel high flow muffler (sounds pretty good), also have it sitting on race land ultimos, I’m sure I’m forgetting a few other things too.

I’ve been thinking about a stage 1 tune. If I do go with one I’m going APR. I used to have some nice color matched side skirts on as well but one flew off on the highway somewhere. Thought for sure they were secured but I guess a few of the screws fell out lol. I was pretty pissed and now I haven’t been able to find any side skirts that were just like the ones I had.

Any big tips or tricks or something you wish you had before you started? I think I have a adequate tool set with a good set of long and short triple squares. Im mostly afraid of snapping a turbo stud which I heard can be a nightmare. Ive probably read every diy and manual im oit there for k04 install I just like to be obsessive in my research.
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 6 жыл бұрын
The triple squares are definitely important, The coolant line on the turbo (one with the banjo bolt) gave us issues. Make sure it is seated properly, for some reason, even when we used the thicker copper crush washer that came with the kit, the rigid coolant line was hitting a metal plug on the CHRA in the center of the turbo, so we had to grind down the plug with an angle grinder so that the coolant line wouldn't interfere. You'll know if its not seated as the coolant leak will be substantial, I heard coolant dripping as soon as I started topping off the coolant before starting the car. The exhaust manifold studs were a pain. Our kit came with replacements, but youll find that some of the nuts will come out fine, others will come out with the stud, and over all it's a pain because there isn't a whole lot of room. Best advice I can give is give yourself time like a whole weekend in case you run into issues with stuck bolts. The heat-shield on the exhaust manifold is a pain in the ass to remove as well, If I remember correct, some of those fasteners were allen wrench style. If I remember more troublesome parts I'll let you know, good luck!

Thanks! If maintenance is good and there are no issues with the vehicle it should be good. Maybe do a compression test for peace of mind. As you know, anytime an upgrade in power is made there is always the chance of something breaking. I drove the car for 3 days on stock software while waiting for the tune to be sent to me and it felt stock. I think the ECU with stock software may also run the risk of over boost since it is controlling the boost control solenoid as if it were the smaller k03 turbo. I definitely recommend a tune if you go with the k04

@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 6 жыл бұрын
This engine is the TSI, so the high pressure fuel pump internals and injectors did not need to be upgraded. The k04 doesn't flow enough air to max out the stock injectors on the TSI. I don't know about the requirements for an FSI, but a tune to accommodate for upgraded injectors would most likely be required. I would call one of the pro tuners such as HPA, APR, Unitronic, etc. They will surely know exactly when the injectors should be upgraded. I know the high pressure fuel pump internals are one of the first things to be upgraded in the FSI from what I've read :)

I noticed this on my 2.0tfsi when I had the turbo off.. howcome the exhaust wheel and wastegate are snow white? Mine was the exact same as fhat.. Surely this is an indication of running too lean ? Any ideas
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
I am also confused by this. I am unsure as well. I have rebuilt this engine and I noticed the same whiteness on my K04 wheel, so it isn't just the K03 turbo. The K03 had unitronic and eurodyne tunes and the k04 had eurodyne before I switched to HPA. Either all of these tunes run on the leaner side or it could also be ethanol content in fuel. I use 94octane fuel which my local gas stations say may contain up to 10% ethanol. If you find out the true answer definitely let me know! Take care.
@AdammP
@AdammP 4 жыл бұрын
@@WannabeTuners thanks for the reply, at first I thought it could be down to elevated exhaust manifold temperature with having a tune but I did come to the conclusion that direct injection engines are supposedly more efficient and capable of running more lean due to higher compression ratios during situations such as cruising. But I wouldn't of thought it would be so lean to white the turbos out like this. I thought it was just mine but now I feel a bit more at ease with seeing and hearing about it elsewhere lol. I was tempted just to get an afr as I am running a tune on a stock k03, I have an ea113 engine and yours is an ea888 so it makes it less likely to have problematic issues relating to the same white turbo. Which also makes me feel more at ease with it being normal and not a tune issue. You'd think however whilst planting it the extra fuel would just overcome it and cover it in carbon like a normal exhaust. Who knows !

hi, i have an 08 gli with 170k on it...the car will need a turbo in the near future and I was wondering if I should go KO4 or not. a big concern for me is reliability; how has the rest of the car held up under the extra boost?
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
For reliability, the K04 isn't going to give you issues as long as the installation is done right and the software you get is reputable. Replace all seals on the oil/coolant lines going to the turbo (those copper crush washers tend to leak if re-used a few times, and they're dirt cheap to replace. That said, anytime you take a vehicle away from stock, you'll be taking some risks, but this hobby is about weighing those risks. If I had to do it all again, I'd go bigger, but other than that, the k04 wasn't by any means unreliable in my experience. The more power you add, the more strain you put on worn/underspec'd components. It's hard to tell without knowing the full history of the car, so you'll have to weigh your own risk vs reward. Making sure all maintenance is up to date is #1. Hope that helps!

@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 6 жыл бұрын
The coolant flush was done two months before this video, you loose a little bit of coolant so have enough to top up after the install. As for oil, pretty much all of it is in the pan by the time you get the oil feed/drain lines off, so you don't really lose any. It just seeps a little. Always good to have some extra coolant and oil in case you need to top up. Probably a good idea to change the oil to have some fresh new oil for the turbo break in period!

Was up guys quick question I have a 2013 Jetta gli and just purchased the APR 2 down pipe and wanna buy a bung for the censor to stay off just for Back up would you know the size of the bung I was told the would run the test pipe file but since I haven’t took it in I’d like to get the bung just don’t know the size or what brand to buy can you help
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the thread/bung size for bosch sensors is M18 x 1.5. Not sure where on the downpipe it should be placed or how much space it needs though. Best bet would be to find the part number for the sensor and then look for what adapters it fits. I think ecstuning offers a few bung options for our engines. Good luck!

From the footage in this video the car had a Neuspeed P-Flo intake, 3" catted 42 DD downpipe, stock intercooler, NGK heat range 8 spark plugs, Red top R8 coilpacks, Spulen dog bone mount insert, base k04 file from Eurodyne, and the latest revision timing tensioner :) The intercooler was upgraded to a Wagner tuning core in another one of our videos

Have a 08 Jetta FSI, any other upgrades with a KO4?
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 3 жыл бұрын
For FSI they recommend upgrading fuel pump internals, not sure if the FSI needs anything else that's different. Definitely a 3" downpipe, as the stock downpipes are very restrictive on both FSI and TSI. Tune is also a must. An upgraded intercooler helps. The HPA K04 kit I bought had a stock location mount for the diverter valve. If the K04 you buy doesn't have a stock location mount for the diverter valve you might need a diverter valve relocation kit. If you have a 6speed manual and the clutch is worn out, it might slip under high load in the higher gears. I don't know for sure because I upgraded the clutch before K04

Can I put this in a stock mk5 2010 Jetta that doesn’t have a turbo
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
No unfortunately not. This turbo is made for the TSI/FSI 2.0T engines. The turbine housing casting is part of the exhaust manifold. Among other things, fitting this turbo onto a different engine will take more work than it is worth, sorry.

@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlpoMartinez88 I haven't worked on an FSI but from what I gather, best bet for K04 is a complete kit (lots of companies like APR, USP etc make one) which includes all the gaskets and lines you need. You'll need your high pressure fuel pump upgraded and you need a tune for the k04 as well. An intake and intercooler upgrade is recommended as well. I ran a k04 with the stock intercooler for a few months before I upgraded, but the intercooler upgrade helps with flow and reducing heat soak.

Great video just found your link browsing on turbos and other car parts I have a 2013 Jetta Gli autobahn last week put in the APR stage 1 and what a difference now here my question for you what would a KO4 turbo be a good place to purchase at and I would have to go stage 2 first then KO4 but is just a swap out turbos meaning would I have to change anything else I’m new to this so be patient with me thanks
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 6 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you for your comment! The K04 is a pretty good upgrade. After almost 1year with it I am feeling like I want more power in the top end so I may be upgrading once again, but the k04 is a great bolt-on upgrade. You do not need to go stage 2 if you want to go K04 but you need a k04 tune and a 3" downpipe if you go with a k04 turbo. The stock downpipe will fit on the k04, but you need the flow of a 3" downpipe if you want everything to work properly. Some kits require you to buy exhaust manifold and downpipe gaskets if they are not included. I am not sure about the clutches in those cars. If you have the same stock clutch as the early 2009-2010 gti's then it may slip under high load with a k04 depending on how worn it is. Most of my information comes from the vwvortex forums and sites like myfastgti etc. Hope that helps you on your way! :)

Thanks for the help so going stage 2to with the 3 inch downpipe with my exhaust all I would need is just a bolt on that K04 for is that what you’re saying?
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 6 жыл бұрын
If you buy a k04 kit, they normally supply you with all that you need. Make sure the kit you buy has replacement crush washers and gaskets for the banjo bolts on oil/coolant lines. Most k04 installs re-use the stock oil/coolant lines. Exhaust manifold gasket, downpipe gasket and replacement nuts and studs for the exhaust manifold sometimes come with a kit as well. Just make sure the k04 you buy has a fitting for the stock location diverter valve. Otherwise, you need to buy a diverter valve relocation kit.

Its the last model year Jetta MKV (2010) so it has the 2.0t TSI engine instead of the previous gen FSI. So it also gets the MK6 instrument cluster. Good eye, first time I've gotten that question. This car is a pain to source parts for. Body is MK5, power train is MK6.

The Ms3 has the Bnr S4 but the S3 is also capable. What's cool is that we have the Eurodyne Maestro Tuning Suite for the Jetta, and Cobb Access Tuner Race software for the Ms3. We've just started playing with the map on the Jetta with good results. The Ms3 is going to be getting new intake and exhaust manifolds come spring time and we're going to port out the turbine/wg on the S4. Then we will dial in a nice tune on both cars and then go head to head:) Should be so much fun!

haha thanks! I haven't seen other K04 kits in person but so far I have no complaints (only gone 1300km/800miles on this one with the k04 base map from eurodyne). First impressions are pretty good! At first I felt bad because the APR and CTS turbo kits seemed more popular and I thought maybe I should have gone with the crowd, but 1500USD was hard to pass up for the turbo (already had eurodyne maestro when I went stage II). I have to admit, my doubts about this turbo went away when we started doing some pulls. Stage II would die off in power past ~5000 rpm when the k03 runs out of steam but now it just keeps pulling hard to redline! I've never driven another k04 GTI/GLI but so far, I'm happy with it! Winter tires are going on soon, so we will be doing a more in depth review of the car in spring time when the bad weather and winter gas is behind us!
