Messah Island in West Manggarai has been struggling with a shortage of domestic water supply. For years, local people relied on purchasing water from Labuan Bajo and nearby islands. The daily needs of 20 to 40 liters incurs significant costs due to boat transport.
Under JICA Partnership program, Toyama Prefectural University is addressing this challenge with project “Support Project for Capacity Improvement, Establishment of Sustainable System on Maintenance of RO Membrane Filtration System in Messah Island.”
The project introduced a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filtration system to provide clean and affordable water to the community. In addition to installing and operating the filtration system, the project established a local association that consist of twenty members to maintain and manage the system.
