That is one hell of a smart jig. Your either a master woodworker or have an engineering background. Pretty impressive.

Just purchased the Big Dozer book from Amazon.. cant wait to receive it. Ive been making wooden toys, tractors, cars, combine harvesters, trucks and fire engines for a few years now and i have my own method for making tyres/wheels, there are also other more complicated indexing jigs for making accurate treads etc but yours is far simpler and I would definitely buy plans for it when you do get round to doing them.. Great work.. fantastic videos.. thank you :)

Amazing work! I've been dabbling around on some plans for one and a key thing people need to keep in mind is that you're using what appears to be a Byrnes 4" table saw. Personally, I have a 10" table saw, so I'm having to enlarge a few things to accommodate a larger diameter blade without cutting into the round base.

Currently working on it. Was a bit of a delay, and I also needed to redesign some of it. I wasn't happy with some wobble that had developed due to slippage in the gearing. So it is in progress. Thanks for asking.

It took awhile, but the plans are finished. Granted, you may not be interested, but that is fine. I got all the bugs worked out and I think the revised plans are much better and more accurate. Anyway, I will have a video soon, but at least the plans are done. Very nice. You could use this on a router table too. V bits would make an interesting tread pattern.
@s.g.devries8557
@s.g.devries8557 3 жыл бұрын
You certainly could use it on a router table. I think if I did, however, I would want a more secure way of keeping the spindle from rotating. A table saw blade cutting almost perpendicular to the wheel doesn't put much rotational stress on the spindle, but a rotating router bit I imagine would put quite a bit of sideways force on the wood and want to rotate the wheel if it weren't held more securely. Good idea though. I will have to explore that.

Still in the works. I am trying to come up with a way to minimize/eliminate the play in the gearing. Right now everything works fine if I make sure to always turn the segmented wheel in one direction, but as soon as I reverse it, the slop in the gear meshing messes up my tread spacing a tiny bit. Not enough to matter to most people, but it is bugging me. Thanks for the comment.

Will this work on a contractors table saw, or is a smaller table top saw required. I have a Metabo C10RJS table saw. GREAT BUILD!!!! This will surely be a money saver.
@s.g.devries8557
@s.g.devries8557 3 жыл бұрын
it could probably be adapted to fit a contractor's saw. Obviously the base plate would need to be larger. The danger in using a saw with a larger blade is that you do not want the blade to come into contact with the rotating ring. I have stop blocks so that I don't push the jig too far and cut the ring, but I am using a 4" diameter blade. With a contractors saw you would have a 10" blade and you would need to very carefully set the stop block position so that the blade made the cut in the wheel, but didn't go too far and cut into the rotating ring. Does that make sense? If you could install a 7" blade it would work better, but you would still need to be careful. Honestly, most of the small parts I build would be terrifying to build using a larger saw.
@rossbell3859

Excellent jig! Hope you finish those plans soon - I would definitely purchase! Also, what is the small table saw that you are using? I really need a quality smaller saw for toy making. Thanks!

Ross, sorry for the delay, I didn't see your comment earlier. The saw that I am using is the Jim Byrnes Saw from modelmachines.com. It isn't the cheapest hobby table saw out there but in my opinion is it certainly the best. I have had mine for over 15 years now and it still works just as good as the day I bought it. Thanks for the comment.

I just received a copy of the new Wheel Making Jig (imperial) book. First look through am very impressed, ingenious design. However, when I tried ordering the sprockets from Servo-City, had a rude surprise. Both the 16 and 18 tooth sprockets have been discontinued. I've searched the web and cannot find substitutes for these critical parts. Question, does the metric version use a different sprocket ratios? Please advise.
@s.g.devries8557
@s.g.devries8557 Жыл бұрын
Well this is indeed unfortunate and disappointing. I am going to have to do some searching. The metric version uses a 60 tooth sprocket as the main sprocket and a 8mm(05B chain) which is slightly larger in pitch, therefore needing the smaller main sprocket. It still uses a 16 and 18 tooth for the smaller sprockets. I will look around and see if I can find another supplier for these components. Thanks for letting me know.

At first glance, try looking at plastockonline.com. They appear to have sprockets for .25 pitch chain.

Just wanted to give you an update. The book is finished and I am waiting to get my proof copy from the printer. Sometimes this takes 2 days, other times it takes 2 weeks, all depends on how busy they are, since author copies are pretty low on the priority list. I will drop another note when it is finished, since the book will probably be available at least a week before the video goes up about it. Thanks for your interest.

I have to say this may have been my fault but I am extremely disappointed, I am just now seeing this video and thought your comments were saying you updated this one and revised your book to reflect changes since some of you parts you referenced in the other video are now unavailable. Soooooo I ordered your book, WRONG, it’s the other model with the chains and whips, whoops and unobtainable parts…now what….I will say this in the most delicate way….I’m not smart enough to figure this out, that’s why I ordered the book, so I guess I’m out 25 bucks and no jig!!!

Hmm, hadn't thought about it. I do plan on writing up the plans for it sometime. I will try to put together a rough estimate on how much it would cost if I were to make one for sale. Between the wood, bearings, T-track, I imagine there is about $25 U.S. worth of materials plus whatever time it takes. I will let you know.
