The most popular era of wrestling was almost always one finisher and it's over, unless there's interference or something. That's boring. The Japanese have been doing multiple false finishes since the 90s, and now Western wrestlers are emulating that. I don't see it as a bad thing, as multiple plausible endings as great drama when done well. With that said, I can usually predict the finish of 99% of the matches I watch today.

That was a shit match. A shit match with a classic moment. If you aired that match today as if it never happened, people would shit on it. Its a stillshot of a moment in time that no longer exists because of the evolution of both the business and the fans. A true five star match is timeless man, look at HBK Vs. Taker, Savage Vs. Steamboat, Razor's ladder match, ect. Jim HAS to let go of different angles "Disrespecting" The business. One imaginary hand grenade amongst a card of legit wrestling is not disrespecting the business. Corny is always screaming "Phony" Goddamn Jim, wrestlers stomp their feet when they throw a punch...its all PHONY man, its a facade, smoke and mirrors...FUCK.

Citizen K Very true. The wrestlers dont even take themselves serious, so they definitely dont care for the business. If this continues, wrestling will be dead and its really all the attitude eras fault. Like Meltzer said, this dumb shit has been going on for years. All of these guys doing dumb shit now, grew up on dumb attitude era shit. Which proves the point many, including myself, have argued for years. The attitude era was the worst era in wrestling history. Every pro wrestling company in the world suffered the consequences of Vince McMahon's, Eric Bishoff`s, Vince Russo`s and to some extent, Paul Heyman's narrow minded approach.

I agree. The audience is largely responsible for that. They treat the talents as entertainers more so than real athletes in competitive struggles. It's more about cheering for two people to execute their spots well rather than suspending disbelief and wanting to see someone win or lose. Nowadays, the "smart" fan cheers for the talents they find the most entertaining and not for the character who has the most integrity and honor.

The problem with today's wrestling for me personally is that I find intelligent people like Meltzer and Cornette talking about wrestling more interesting than anything that goes on in the ring (even really good, athletic, serious wrestling). And it's no knock on today's wrestlers. There's just been too much free wrestling on TV and internet that it's lost its luster. I'll always follow pro wrestling as a fan but the days of me watching weekly pro wrestling are long gone. So basically if I had to pick one thing that has killed pro wrestling- just for me personally- it's this wonderful thing called the internet.

Short version of my history as a fan: 1988 first year watching, mostly WWF fan, watched ECW tv when it was on TNN, and usually just caught the first hour of Nitro. Huge fan of the Attitude era, eventually got into buying tapes from Japan, and watched hundreds of hours of NJPW, AJPW, AJW, Mpro, and so on. I have watched a fuck ton of wrestling. I got kind of burned out in the early 2000s when WCW was sold, and WWF/E stopped trying hard. Japan was also going through a bad stretch as well, outside of some fantastic NOAH matches. A couple of years ago I subscribed to WWE Network so I could watch all 'the glory days' and watched a bunch of NWA/WCW, and rewatched all the most classic WWF stuff, mostly from the 90s. I was convinced that the 90s were the greatest of all time, especially if you counted the great matches in Japan at that time. At the same time I listened to a lot of Cornette bashing current wrestling, and that further convinced me that great wrestling died like 15 years ago so why bother, right? Fast forward to November of last year and I watch an old podcast with Steve Austin talking to Melzter about Omega vs Okada at Wrestlekingdom 11. I had some extended time off so I made an effort to see that match. About an hour later after seeing the match I was in a state of shock and awe, so I immediately started googling for more and realized that they had three more matches. Shortly after I subbed to NJPW World and have since watched hundreds of hours of content. I also watch NXT which blows me away seemingly more so with every new Takeover show. Today I feel like I am as in love with Wrestling as I was 17 years ago, and that gap of not watching was a huge mistake, and for people like Cornette convincing me to stay away from modern wrestling was fucking retarded since it cost me so many potential memories of seeing great shows, as they happened, rather than now having to go scour the archives like I am. If anything, I am seeing some of the greatest matches ever, right now, from the last four years or so. Go find a full match of Omega against Ishii and tell me it's phony b.s.

Dave No, its not always a good thing. If two women came to the ring, and stripped naked, made out and had sex on raw for 3 hours, would that be good for the business? Theres a difference between mindless entertainment and keeping the train rolling. Doing dumb shit for the sake of a crowd reaction is very narrow minded. The issue is that everyone now has tunnel vision. Lets get this quick money instead of keep the money rolling forever.

Talent simply need a degree of autonomy with regards to promos and character evolution. Some current 2nd and 3rd tier talent would elevate themselves through their natural god given ability to connect with the masses if allowed, creative would then have a lot more time to work with talent who struggle to form a connection on the stick.

It’s funny to listen to Dave discuss Lucha Underground limiting their upside based on their booking and how their show plays out back whenever this discussion took place which was clearly before AEW became a thing. Ironically the same thing he cites to limiting what LU could be is what has occurred with AEW since its inception. When AEW was first announced it had so much goodwill and optimism from a lot of lapsed wrestling fans like myself who had become disillusioned with WWE and wanted to see a true big brand alternative enter the market. And seeing an AEW who had the financial backing to do that, a prime time show, and presented themselves to be a realistic and sports centric show it seemed like the alternative had finally arrived. Unfortunately the company immediately focused on the niche audience and hasn’t looked back from that ever since. And it has set a ceiling for what it can ever become because it is so geared to the niche audience that it doesn’t appeal to a non-committed wrestling fan. It’s been disappointing because at first I genuinely thought their show would be a mix of style and that they would have some of the traditional style and some of the newer style and offer something for everybody - especially seeing how many experienced minds they brought onto their staff. Unfortunately it has been entirely that new style and the irony is that if you showed Dave what he said about LU back then and asked him how AEW was doing something similar that limits their potential he’d never be able to acknowledge that being the case.

Meltzer's argument that since it keeps getting the "pops" then it works is so flawed. The tv show Jackass got a lot of views but it was still low brow garbage. Better comedy shows got nowhere near the views of Jackass, but according to Meltzer Jackass was doing it right.

Gonzo Lewd not nessicarily. Consider ROH or NJPW, who both still present wrestling as a serious sport and who's ratings are climbing in spite of their less than stellar TV deals. NJPW is about to hit the states for a G-1 pre-show, and according to stubhub the tickets are going for anywhere from $100-$200 at a 13,500 capacity arena.

No, they wouldn't. Y'know why i know that? Because Brock Lesnar is still the biggest star. Because Samoa Joe got over big. Because Braun got over big. BECAUSE NXT IS FUCKING OVER BIG (talk to me, and tell me to my face that the Samoa Joe v Nakamura feud wasn't taken seriously or presented in a more realistic style). When you're given a window to suspend disbelief, you're automatically going to be more engrossed in the experience. When you can turn off your brain and say "2 amazing ass wrestlers are going at each other to see who's the better man", in my opinion, it is a better and more popular product. When you go too hokey, you see a dip, because your brain notices when something is phony. When a promo is scripted, when a match is badly telegraphed or badly put together. Is wrestling "fake", "scripted"? Yeah, fucking damn right it is, but i believe that wrestling is better off making you believe it's real.

Braun is the best example. He doesn't make stupid jokes he just tells people he's going to kill them dead. Then guess what? He kills them dead and it's fucking great. Bayley is the best example of someone being absolutely killed by bad scripts and shitty comedy and bad booking. Who would cheer for someone who actually said she doesn't want to hurt people in wrestling? Does her character think her moves don't hurt?

I disagree heavily with mister meltzer here. Theres no comparing the whole idea of undertaker coming back to life to the jackoffs doing dickflips and air grenades. Undertakers resurections were played as serious and something within the character’s persona. It was part of the narrative that the matches supported. This air grenade and dick spot type is just doing silly shit for the sake of it for a cheap pop.

It's true that I don't watch contemporary pro wrestling/sports entertainment. I get my fix by these kinds of discussions and specials/interviews by past superstars and about past pro wrestling shows. I did come back to current wrestling briefly around the time of CM Punk. He was interesting, but the PG WWE is mostly boring and their story lines are old hat.
