I was never a big Van Dam fan myself but the crowd loved him and still do. Earlier today I was watching a match from Raw on WWE's KZbin channel(I think it was titled TLC 4) between four teams going for the tag belts: RVD/Jeff Hardy vs. Christian/Jericho vs. Bubba Ray/Spike Dudley and champs Kane/The Hurricane. Helms was supposed to be in the match but was taken out from an earlier attack. The crowd went nuts every time RVD got near those belts. He definitely received the biggest response out of all seven of those dudes...

As Jim pointed out RVD was unique and so was Foley and so was Piper. They were being themselves and doing what came naturally to them and that legitimacy is what worked. They compared RVD to Rocca but RVD really wasn't coming out to be the next so-and-so. He was the first RVD. So naturally if you copy his schtick it isn't going to work because he's the original. I wasn't sure if RVD could transition to being a "proper" wrestler in the WWF where he couldn't use chairs in every match but he adapted almost immediately. The most impressive move was the Van Terminator where he would splingshot dropkick the entire length of the ring to kick a chair into his opponent's face. In ECW he would have Fonzie hold the chair in front of his opponent. Then at Wrestlemania XVII Shane McMahon did one and so RVD doing it wouldn't be as impressive since the WWF audience already saw Shane do it. So then RVD did it by holding the chair himself as he leapt off the ropes and positioned the chair in mid-air to kick it into the guy's face. That was NUTS!! I couldn't believe how cool that was. I don't know why he didn't do it that way in ECW but maybe he didn't think of it until Shane had stolen his thunder and he needed to top it. I had no idea a human being could do it that way.

Rob Van Dam is one of the few high flyers who actually looked like his moves hurt like hell. Very few high flyers look like they're doing anything to the opponent but Van Dam looked devastating. He fitted in so well in that main event picture in the 00's as a nonchalant comic relief character amongst all the prima donna types. And he could sell moves as good as Michaels or The Rock any day. Just sad so many wrestlers derailed shortly after WWF became a monopoly, including RVD. So many main eventers seemed to suffer from such cruel twists of fate in the early 00's and Rob was sadly one of them but he got off light considering what happened to some of his peers. Eddie, Benoit, Angle and RVD should have been the ones carrying the company into the 2010's but horribly unlucky circumstances fucked them all over. Like Eddie, like Benoit, like Angle, RVD is one of the absolute best to ever do it.

Like when he didn’t go to the troops event in Middle East or a few European dates. Vince likes yes men and because Rob was considered an outsider from day one, it didn’t do him any favors. fly guy ABSOLUTELY, Jerry Lynn being the more experienced, better technical wrestler along with being a much better story teller within his matches clearly led Van Dam to those all time classics, but without Van Dam being an insanely naturally talented and athletic with the ability to perform those crazy moves you when it was appropriate they would have just been more above average-quite good matches from Jerry Lynn that were well received and remembered as evidence of Jerry Lynn’s tremendously underrated in ring work. Whereas since Rob could do those things they’re remembered as Jerry’s very best matches, which despite him never receiving his proper appreciation and well earned respect as an in ring great- is very hard to do. His matches with 123 Kid before he went to the fed are great, he’s got great matches in ECW with other wrestlers, and he had great matches in Japan, but none that reach the greatness of Lynn-Van Dam. Know what i mean?

I'll never forget his early job matches as Robbie Vee on TBS. He was billed from Battle Creek, MI and got in at least one cool move before losing. That was the squash match you didn't want to miss.

I remember watching Van Dam in ECW and I stopped and thought, "Dear God, this is the best wrestler I've ever seen in my life!" Everything he did was just crazy, he did things I've never seen before, yet it worked, he told a story, give him 30 minutes and he'll give you a classic. It was so effortless, so good. Yet, no one could do what he did. It's like in boxing, boxing trainers all over the nation have said in the 70's, early 80's, every fighter coming in wanted to fight like Muhammad Ali. So they came in and tried to do the head movement and the dancing, then they'd get knocked out. LOL... Every trainer had to tell them, you ain't Ali, put your damn hands up and learn to block punches. Of course boxing is real fighting, so many of these guys in order to make it had to learn to box properly. It's why you never saw fighters like Ali after Ali, no one can pull it off. In wrestling though, RVD changed the independent scene forever, and so many of these wrestlers can't pull that off, but they try. But unlike boxing, no one is there to knock them out.

I know your comment is at least 2 years old, but I’m just seeing it and I simply must co-sign your sentiments about RVD. He made the remarkably difficult, impressive shit look so fucking easy! When an artist, entertainer, and/or athlete makes that shit look so smooth and seemingly effortless, that’s *serious* talent combined with great training and *serious* commitment. It takes a helluva backbone and big balls to do the incredible, high flying, backflips, and that rad ass splits on the ropes into a fucking moonsault! Not everyone has the personality or essence to even try. Rob Van Dam is one of the absolute best performers I’ve ever seen!

I got to give RVD a pot brownie. We were going toa Hard Core Justice show and the following days tapings. I joked with my friend wouldn;t be funny if we ran into him I;d give him one of my pot brownies. Little did I know ended up not only using the same hotel he was when there in Orlando, but came into the loby to check in while I was checking in. So yeah I got to give him that pot brownie and he gave us a nice nod at the next night show letting me know how good it was. Favroite wrestling experince of my life.

I need to write to Jim. Just heard him mention Dooley and heard him sing a song about Julie a couple days ago. Never heard my last name used anywhere before so I thought it was pretty cool. Longview used to hate him but he was doing his job back in the 90s LOL. But now that I'm older he is obviously one of the best characters in wrestling history

I can see why so many people are fans of RVD but in I am probably one of the very few people that wasn't that much of a fan of him. Not exactly sure why as he was a very good wrestler and had a good persona. You could rely on him to perform and he was consistent. I guess it's just one of those things as everyone has wrestlers who they just are not that fond of.

RVD had his best matchup against wrestlers whose style was contrary to his. Like his match vs HHH at Unforgiven 2002 for the World Title, RVD is Benoit Summerslam 2002 for the Intercontinental Title and RVD vs William Regal Wrestlemania 18 for the Intercontinental Title.

Remember when RVD camed back and confronted Rhino in ECW? I believe he had his orange wrestling attire, kinda like tiger looking. In his short time in ECW he did as greater things as he did in entire WWF career. In ECW his interaction with Bill Alfonso & Sabu plus his promos there were 🔥. I always wanted him to be his ECW self. With Alfonso & Sabu by his side. He had a great push in WWF in the beginning, where he should've won the World Title in the triple threat match he had win Austin & Kurt Angle . But his push never was the same for a long while. Had WWF had WCW competition, I'm sure he would've had a quicker run as World Champion!

The whole fn show deserves more respect and admiration. His ECW cocky persona was unlike anything else. He did some of the coolest chain wrestling I had ever seen. His whole arsenal was innovative. His Romero Stretch buster still hasn't been duplicated that I know of. Various Vandaminator chair spots. Maneuvering his body in mid air. The gorilla press moonsault he did to Christian. Nobody sold ddts and piledrivers like he did. The guy is so flexible, he invented his own weight lift. A true hybrid of strength, athleticism, agility, lucha puro, striking, charisma, hardcore, and high flying. A true pioneer of the exhibition style. Which is the actual name for what you purists call "spot fests". Not always meant to tell a traditional story, but an action packed showcase of ability. He laid the path for the Ricochets, the Styles, The Mustafa Ali's. But... To me, 2 Cold Scorpio paved the way for RVD...
