@@lanceharlow8621 i would say that's a little overstating the case. He just wants wrestling to be presented as an athletic contest between two or more badasses that have some sort of plausible beef. He knows that sells. That may be impossible in 2020 with worked matches . Ufc does that very thing with real fights as Jim points out often. Imo that's a big reason why the UFC has exploded in popularity in the last 20 years while wrestling is less popular than ever.

According to Luger’s most recent shoot interviews, he did NOT leave the building. He flat out admitted he was scared when it happened in the ring, but to his credit he didn’t leave the building. He said he was taught by Hiro Matsuda to be respectful to veterans in the business. Oliver Humperdink was managing Brody that night. He said that he actually went to Brody’s dressing room, knocked on the door, and Humperdink let him in. He went up to Brody who was sitting down, and basically apologized for anything he might have done to offend Brody or upset him. To his relief, he said Brody wasn’t upset with him at all. Brody basically said the match just wasn’t working. Brody told him he was working as a face in Dallas, he knew Luger was leaving Florida, and he wasn’t feeling the match was flowing well. They shook hands and that was the end of it. Luger has stated that on more than one occasion.

Brody sat down in a match against Jim Dugan in Houston. Jim discussed this with Jim on an episode of Back to the territories

The match Jim was thinking of in Houston was Brody vs Jim Duggan. Another one to add to the list was the 1978 match in Abilene TX with Harley Race vs Don Slatton for the NWA title, where Slatton double crossed Race and briefly was NWA world champion before Race grabbed Slatton backstage, dragged him back to the ring, and preceded to beat him in the ring for the World Title. Slatton later had a belt made for himself claiming to be the World Champion, and when Race came back to town, he found out, and took the fake belt away from Slatton and disposed of it.

If you see the intro to that match, Great Antonio was led to the ring with a giant chain around his neck like a wild beast. He was there at the same time as Andre (77), and even did a very unplanned run-in during the end of an Inoki-Andre match. Andre grabbed him and fed him a few fists, then Great Antonio hustled back to the locker room. He had no business being in the ring or even the business.

Luger-Brody Incident....Luger said in several new interviews that he didnt know what was wrong with Brody not selling and he believed he did something wrong during the match. Luger looked to referee Bill Alfonso whats up or what to do. Now Bill Alfonso also in a shoot interview said he told Luger to throw him (Alfonso) down so he an enact a disqualication on Luger so Alfonso could legitimately (unbeknownst to the fans) end the match. Only thing Im unsure is, wasnt the cage chain locked? Because Luger said (they) couldnt open the cage door so he climbed the wall. Now here is what Luger says upon meeting Brody in dressing room. He questioned Brody, did he (Luger) do something wrong to upset him (Brody) or make him mad. Brody did reply it had nothing to do with Luger. Apparently Brody was infamous for not getting along with promoters and decide to change things on a whim by himself and not inform anyone.

That is what I've read as well. Luger went to Brodie to ask what he did wrong, and learn and make amends with Brodie (Good on Lugers part, btw), and Brody replied something like "The crowd just wasn't into it" or something to that affect, but it was never about Luger... Brodie was notorious for stiffing bookers and promoters. Yet, outside the ring, I guess he was a nice guy, great father and husband, so go fig..

I’d love a territory-style game, when you’re a Promotor, and/or Booker, and you have to run a territory, and try to be successful; sort of like a ‘Football Manager’ type of game, where you’re the manager of a football club, and you have to work within the limits of the club you choose to manage. Where you have to: buy and sell players, work within your budget, hire/fire coaches, and other backroom staff, improve the training facilities, increase the capacity of the stadium, keep team/player morale up, etc; and you have to do all of this, while trying to be successful with your team, and not get fired because of your piss-poor results haha. It’s a great game, and can be addictive, once you get going; oh, just in case you didn’t know, it’s football as in soccer- I don’t know where you’re from, so thought I’d best mention it. But it would be great to have a game called something like ‘Jim Cornette’s Pro Booker’ (shit title, I know, but it’s the first one I thought of haha); where you open a promotion, and are in charge of everything that goes on: hiring/firing the talent- including negotiating their pay, and either blistering them when they fuck up, or encouraging them when they do good, in order to build up them up, so they do good next time; creating angles, giving finishes, organising big main events, getting your show on television, expanding your territory, etc, all while vying for supremacy with other promotions, and trying not to go out of business haha. That would be fantastic; and it would be even better if you could also play as the wrestlers too; where you have to have great matches to entertain the crowd, and perform the finishes, as they were given, so you don’t displease the fans (or your boss), and risk them not coming back, and not tuning into your TV program… Something like that, but I’ve rambled on enough haha. Still, it would be great to have a wrestling game based off the old territory system, with a modern twist; maybe one day someone will get around to it eventually…at least I can hope haha. Apologies for rambling on so long; brevity is not my strongest attribute haha. All the best. 👍😀

The story behind the Koji Kitao/John Tenta thing was because both had been sumo wrestlers. Kitao had been a yokozuna (a famous failure of a yokozuna, but that's neither here nor there), while Tenta had never passed the middle ranks. Kitao thought that it would be ridiculous for a top division champion to get roughed up by a mid-rank rikishi, and didn't want to go along with the booking. So, the shooting. Turned out Kitao was not the tough guy that he thought he was, and the whole thing got ugly. Kitao made a comeback to pro wrestling later, only to get betrayed and kicked in the head by Nobuhiko Takada. I guess it goes around and comes around.

Tenta never passed mid ranks, but it's always been my understanding that it wasn't a failure on the part of Tenta. He had that huge tattoo and for his matches wore an arm band over it, but if he was going to progress, he would have been expected to get rid of the ink- only really doable by skin graft. Tenta didn't wish to go through that whole ordeal, and Japanese culture sees/saw tattoos as dirty or indicative of criminal tendencies, as the Yakuza is covered in them. Just adding some context here!

@@JennaLeigh There was also some culture shock involved, not just with Japanese culture overall, but with sumo culture specifically. Sumo's lifestyle is grueling, particularly for low-ranked wrestlers, as they have to work as servants for high-ranked wrestlers and trainers, on top of undergoing extremely intense training. The issue with the tattoo, and potentially even some xenophobia targeted at him, only made things worse. Tenta actually did very well in sumo for as long as he was around (he was undefeated in sumo's lower divisions, actually!), but retired before he could reach the higher ranks. Had he stayed, he might've had a very successful career. Also, regarding Kitao, he didn't so much get promoted for political reasons but because he caught a lucky break; the yokozuna at the time was expected to retire soon, at the same time that Kitao happened to be "best of the rest" (or rather, "most consistent of the rest"). So he got promoted, with the expectation that he would eventually become the top guy, particularly once the previous yokozuna retired. Not only did he not improve after he got the title, but the other yokozuna didn't even retire, and two other wrestlers ranked behind Kitao got promoted to yokozuna on their own right, making Kitao's rank promotion pointless. He then got into a feud with his trainer, which got him ejected from sumo in disgrace. Kitao then turned to pro wrestling, expecting to be pushed as a top guy because of his sumo credentials... which he did, until the Tenta incident.

It's a pity there was no mention of the legendary Stecher/Caddock match from 1920 where Joe Stecher "went mad" and forced Earl Caddock into a shoot. We don't really know what the booked result for Stecher-Caddock 1920 was although there is some opinion that Stecher was booked to win anyway, in which case Caddock just had to spin Stecher along for two hours before giving in.

@@kurtvanderbogarde8402 there wasn’t room for carrying of anyone in that match, what you do have is slow counters to facilitate the flow, the two had split a series of matches when caddock was wrestling amateur, a legitimate match between two elite guys that are familiar with each other would tend to be rather boring and a war of attrition

Verne was a world class amateur( an alternate on the 1948 Olympic team) and All American at Minnesota. He would’ve broken that bully’s ass in half in 30 seconds flat. Though Watts had a college wrestling background at Oklahoma,he wasn’t in Gagne’s class. That’s why I’ve always laughed at Hogan’s claim of shooting on Gagne in the dressing room as Verne,even at an advanced age, would’ve killed him.

Almost every match in the old Portland territory house shows were “friendly shoots”. Eldon, Don Owens brother, like amateur wrestling and he’d have the guys go out and shoot the first few minutes and then go to a finish. I loved to going to those cards in Medford, OR and Grants Pass, OR. 1978-1989

Adonis went to dressing room looking for more and got the shit beat out of him by Spivey and had to get over 300 stitches in his face. After that Adrian was never the same and he damn sure stopped being a bully.

I can't find the clip anymore, but there was a tag team match in japan Bruno was apart of, i think it was the company in japan he wasnt too thrilled on, at that time someone got into the japanese wreslter (Might of been the champ) to shoot on bruno..... the problem was, Bruno was a real strongman, so he powered out and went after the guy, the guy ran and tried his hardest for the rest of his match to avoid Bruno.

I would call the match between Lou Thesz and Antonio Inoki a “friend;y” shoot. Thesz got the ball rolling with a nasty suplex right off the start. Now as far as guys “shooting” on others, I would have to say the Steiners and Buzz Sawyer were pretty notorious for that.

If they hit worked moves with high impact… That is not shooting that is working a strong style.

Actually cooperation is needed in landing correctly so you don’t nearly break your freaking neck - remember Nakamura and John Cena??? You can clear;y see the look on Inoki’s face as Thesz clearly didn’t call the spot. Shit was def on, but between two warriors of shooting. Strong style…Friend;y shoot……I would pretty much consider those to be the same thing. Friendly shoot - or friendly competition as Thesz was def not trying to hurt Inoki; both are/were two legendary “hookers” and were def going to make some challenging moves, as they should - just kinda sounds better than strong style - just to me though. Sometimes “shooting” is just to see what the other guy is made of and not an attempted assault. Buzz Sawyer was notoriously stiff to the point of “shooting” in many matches. Legends in the business called him a massive psycho and bully. A belly to back suplex? As first move of a match??? That move was a freaking FINISHER back then nitwit!! That would be like using the pile driver right at the start of a match……in the 80’s!! Thesz was testing. He def wasn’t pissed or angry. When Lou Thesz got mad at others, which he was also known for, he would do a nice little move where he get an elbow near a guys face and with opposite hand pop the arm/elbow closest to an opponents face for a nice little jab. Not as anything outrageous or shocking. Just a little hello and let em know.

I seen a lot a friendly shoots, which the match turns into an amateur wrestling match, which you can tell each perfomer had some high school, college, etc amateur wrestling training. Friendly shoots are the best.

Certain matches probably have pockets of friendly shoots honestly, think certain Cruiserweight matches, or matches featuring the aforementioned amateurs, the catch-as-catch can bits. It wouldn't shock me.

Yeap. Myself that wrestled in high-school (145lb weight class) love seen those. If you have some amateur wrestling background you can tell. You can tell if they usually shoot or stand in their matches (Freestyle or Greco-Roman). I love seeing those.
