This. I've legitimately never known a company or business to blatantly treat their own consumers with such contempt like the WWE does. It's astounding really. Years and years of taking their own fans for granted is finally starting to bite them on the ass.

@@kira3159 Yeah they're raking it in through these massive TV revenues and the Saudi sell out money. Fan interest is at an all time low. That is an absolute fact. WWE network figures aren't growing. House shows were already all but dying on their ass pre pandemic and their weekly television and PPV gates were atrocious too. And then we have the ratings....absolutely shit. Sure, old Vinny Mac isn't gonna go broke anytime soon, and sure, he most likely doesn't care either, hell, they're VERY good at making money....not so hot at keeping fans.... Also, with the way TV networks are bleeding money right now I wouldn't be so sure they'll get the same massive offers next time around....

Sunday Night Heat was a decent show mostly a highlight reel of the week's events plus matches that mostly showcase up-and-coming talent and the occasional appearance of a big name. Now of course there are no worthwhile hightlights from the week, there are no significant up and comers and there are no big names outside of the semi-retired part-timers.

@@kopner5672 Quality and popularity are intrinsically linked in wrestling. Professional wrestling started as a crooked carnival sideshow, and the promoter was unlikely concerned with anything more than putting on something that drew a crowd in every town. And this mentality has carried down through the ages - what will draw the most people every week? If that is high-flying technical wrestling, then that is quality wrestling. If it's punch-kick brawling, then that is quality wrestling. It's not high art. It's about making money.

Lack of competition breeds complacency. The same is happening now with Disney taking over the entire film industry. Now anything Disney does is creatively bankrupt because they have no incentive to come up with original ideas, because they barely have any competition. Raw's ratings dropping can only mean good things for the wrestling industry as a whole. Now that they're competing with AEW, they might actually pull their heads out of their asses.

Where's the passion?! Who are the trailblazers that revolutionize the culture? It's like everyone is fat, dumb and happy with no incentive to make their own mark. There were great authors and poets in the 19th century, great entrepreneurs in the 20th, and now everyone has traded in their individuality in exchange for a plastic life that can be broadcasted on tv, the internet, etc. When I look back on some frog on a log playing a banjo and singing about rainbows, I get the feeling that he already found what he said he was looking for- and what no one seems to have today.

@@First1it1Giveth Well said. Creativity is dying. Wrestling has its own problems, but media as a whole is becoming even more bland. Appreciate the artists before us and become inspired, not just cash in on old movies. Back to wrestling, Jim made a good point how WWE sending several wrestlers to extra training to teach them to wrestle the WWE style is like telling Michael Jackson to foxtrot instead of moonwalk. The industry leaders like Disney and WWE don't want to change with the times and they are not going to let creative people revolutionize content.

There are no great characters anymore. No great gimmicks. Wrestling was almost fake, but you had real crazy people. Macho was amazing and crazy. It all looks like generic boring crap now. If WWE never changed course and had similar vibes to what it used to be, I think there’s a 90% chance I’d still watch it today. Some people like to blame “getting older” as the reason they stopped watching WWE. I think that’s BS. If you ask me, the product went off a cliff. Step 1: Assign Stephanie McMahon to a nonwrestling/noncreative role. Have her handwash Otis' underwear for all I care. Step 2: Get rid of the entire creative team. Step 3: Hire an actual booker like Cornette or Heyman. It doesn't have to be those guys. And then let them hire 1 or 2 guys to work underneath them. Step 4: Vince still has the final say and filters out the ideas he wants. The booker will have to be someone who will tell Vince to minimize the comedy and recycled ideas. Step 5: Get rid of Kevin Dunn, nobody likes the shaky camera angles, extreme close ups and constantly changing camera angles when 1 move is being done. Step 6: Have the patience to see long term angles through. Step 7: Stop having tag team partners and factions constantly turn on each other and have a long feud that burns out the fans. Step 8: Stop with all the factions. You will never recreate the nWo, the Four Horsemen or DX. Step 9: One pay per view every 2 months and no more theme pay per views like TLC and Hell in a Cell. Those are special matches that should only happen once every 2 to 3 years to settle a long term feud or because of special circumstances. Step 10: Scripted promos are gone, let the wrestlers be creative and give them a chance to react to the crowd. Step 11: Actively recruit the bigger guys but then treat them with the proper respect. No big man should ever be a comedy act, doing gross out skits or be a jobber for the main event guys. Step 12: One world champion, an intercontinental champion, one tag team champion and one women's world champion, that's it. Step 13: Stop with the women's revolution. Fans cheer for talented superstars, no one cheers just because of their genitals. Step 14: Wrestler's real and fictional family members should never be on the show unless they are properly trained and talented not because they are related. Step 15: Every minute of air time should be used to create an angle, further an angle, put someone over or promote the stars in some way. No more comedy, gross stuff, juvenile nonsense, rehashing the past, cringe inducing fake backstage fights, confusing segments that go nowhere or anything that will insult the fan's intelligence. Step 16: Listen to the fans. If someone is booed out of the building every week stop forcing them down our throats. If someone is popular with the fans don't kill off their character because they are outshining the one you are forcing down our throats.

Out of curiosity I joined the RAW Thunderdome. 1) The showrunner would tell me when to cheer and boo, either during entrances, big spots, or finishes. When the show started he said the more animated I was, the more likely I'd be on camera. It was absolutely infuriating that every time I was starting to get lost in the show, he'd chime in and completely yank me out of whatever zone I was getting in to focus on what was happening. Even the most casual of casuals I've spoken to about this, whose only point of reference to wrestling is channel flipping to RAW or Smackdown or NXT randomly, were appalled that they'd tell me who to cheer or boo. 2) The Thunderdome stream quality is embarrassing. I was having flashbacks of pirating PPVs on Desirulez and Firstrow back in college. Maybe if WWE didn't go out of their way to be overproduced, I might have actually enjoyed their show that I wanted to pay attention to having not watched RAW in years, only for said overproduction to yank me out of any kind of interest I'm trying to build.

I would argue Vince never really knew how to make a star. All his top stars of the 80's and 90's pretty much came out of the territories; the vast majority already able to pack their local halls 6 nights a week (Savage, Lawler, Piper, etc...) Many of the stars that hit their stride in the WWF did so in spite of Vince, like Steve Austin and the Rock (Rocky Maiva anyone? "The Ringmaster"?) The Undertaker and Mandkind were a rare fluke where the talent was so fucking great that even a stupid gimmick would work with them because they were going to get over regardless (like Dusty Rhodes making polka dots work). For every Stone Cold that made it, Vince churned out a dozen Max Moons, Bastion Boogers, and Red Roosters. He's batting around a .037 and thinks he's a power hitter like Mark "No Do Roids" McGuire. Sure, on rare occasions there's a base hit, but that's nothing you can bank on.

This is the story behind my turning off wrestling: It was 2010. Smackdown was recorded and aired on Friday. I saw a match with John Morrison. He put on a heck of a performance. His opponent worked his legs over pretty well. He hobbled to the turnbuckle, lept to the top rope, then lept like 3/4 of the way across the ring. As the announcers talked of him digging down deep, I was remarking about how that unsold everything that has been done and, while might have been ok for a main event of a major PPV, not for a regular match on Smackdown. Morrison was off the next week. But, the week after, same blame ending. I turned it off then.
