That has always been the magic of wrestling. Improvisation. It's not a coincidence that the vast majority of larger-than-life greatest wrestlers did their promos while drunk, high, coked up, depressed or clinically angry.

Vince clearly heard that movie and TV actors are told to not look at the camera during a performance, unless they are deliberately breaking the fourth wall, so he thinks his wrestlers will give an air of authenticity if they also don't look into the camera. However, that only works when people are meant to be watchign a scripted performance. If you want something scripted to look not staged, have them react to the camera. It's not rocket science.

People shit all over how TNA was run back in the day, but I remember enjoying how they did backstage segments like 10 years ago. It would be like the cameraperson was just roaming the backstage area looking for footage and they just so happen to come across something happening. They would film from a distance so they're not directly in the faces of the wrestlers and still pick up whatever is going on. That always felt more real than any of WWE's backstage segments. Like Jim has said on previous occasions, it's hard to take it seriously when you have heels planning nefarious schemes with a camera right in their faces and they're supposed to just ignore it.

What troubles me is that what passes for 'missing' something must be at a very low standard if he does that. And then it reinforces itself, as you see people trying to sound relaxed or laid-back online, but it's only a cowardly bluff to make intensity and a sense of purpose seem uncalled for and we just need to "chill". In short, I am against propaganda in the guise of image and impressions and attitude. It is so easy to manipulate one's image and attitude to serve an underlying 'message'. I think scripts could work (to a point at least) if they were written by people that actually liked and watched wrestling. There's hundreds of writers waiting tables in LA, find the ones that are gonna go home and watch old wrestling when they clock out and give them a shot, because I don't think most of these guys (and girls) got the talent to pull it off on their own (the wrestlers, I mean). Not forcing them to ramble on for 15-20 minutes would help too. A one person promo shouldn't last longer than most Tool songs.

Travis' artwork is from "Dastardly & Muttley in their Flying Machines" (1969-1970 Hanna Barbera) a spinoff of "Wacky Races" (1968 Hanna Barbera) that just had Dick Dastardly & Muttley (no other racers) chasing Yankee Doodle Pigeon. I have some amateur bookers to apologize to. The closest I've come to writing dialog for wrestlers or announcers is when they didn't understand what they were supposed to say and just spoke my instructions.
