The problem Cody had in AEW was how predictably dumb every match was. You were guaranteed there'd be any or all of the following: A) a bunch of people escorting him to the ring who didn't need to be there B) blading, most likely with some awkward diversionary moment where the action has to completely stop for a minute C) a run-in or interference by somebody who didn't need to be involved in the match. D) a contrived spot that just doesn't make any sense, that's only there for the sake of having something to go on a highlight reel. Rejoining the WWE and relinquishing a lot of the power to make the decisions to put that stuff into his matches will be the best thing that could happen to Cody. He's capable of having solid matches, his problem is that he stopped doing that a long time ago and nobody overruled him.

I think this whole situation is going to be a bitter pill to swallow for the hardcores on both sides in the long run; AEW hardcores because the image of Tony's perfect wrestling utopia where everyone is friends and happy is given another blemish, and WWE hardcores because they'll see it as a victory without realising that there is a VERY high chance of Cody being booked like a complete loser by the time the year's out. It'll all simply end in more rabble and tribalism. All that said, Cody looked like an absolute star and got a huge reaction. Seth said something interesting, he said that the WWE requires a certain type of person to suceed, and most dont have it, even if they have other things going for them, even being a great wrestler. Cody has that talent, and that same thing made him stick out as pompous in AEW, whereas that same shtick makes him fit right in at WWE. I guess it is called "Playing the Game" i.e. you cant just go out and do everything you want, you have to know how to get over in WWE with the fans AND the bosses. Kevin Owens has it, Seth Rollins has it... Kenny Omega definitely does not despite how good he can be. Just please WWE, keep Brandy away from him - its a big reason why people get sick of him because she radiates acting bigger in the business than she is. It works for Cody, does not work for her and harms Cody in the process.

there was a lot to process with Cody showing up and the reaction he received. Part of it felt like the whole "if you don't go away, we won't miss you" syndrome. Another part was people viewing him this time as the outsider making his return. He's not the EVP in WWE and more of an underdog because he's in someone else's home. More importantly, he gets to be himself and there's continuity where he's not rebranded so people are cheering that fact. The part where he doesn't have an entourage is definitely playing a huge part in his resurgence. But I personally think the beginning of the end for Cody in AEW was Brandi. There were other bad moments that made things worse for Cody, but I think his position and the way Brandi was positioned gave people a sour taste. Also, Tony Khan should've done what he could to hide the fact that Cody, etc. were EVPs. All those things plus the reality TV show just made Cody seem arrogant. Whether he is or not is irrelevant because people are going to come up with their own narratives based on hearsay. At least here in the WWE, you have people who are better at presenting someone and making them look like a real star because that's their specialty. And I'll admit I was a bit surprised at the amazing reaction Cody received. Will it be sustainable though? His speech on RAW was passionate but it still had a bit of awkwardness and his delivery is still off for me. But the WWE are starting to really push his image, allow him to do interviews, etc. to re-establish him as a major player. And I'm guessing that because he received the two major positive reactions, Vince is going to take him more seriously this time around especially because he's running out of stars with experience that freshen up the product. But this is why having AEW around is good because now each company can freshen their line up a bit and do talent trades. WWE's strong point is their marketing capability. So a guy like Cody can leave, make a strong statement elsewhere, gain experience and prove to someone like McMahon that maybe he made a mistake then get a 2nd chance. One thing that's severely missing from the older days of wrestling is the idea of talent moving from promotion to promotion now and then to create a bit of a stir.
