The best thing about being an atheist is that we're the only ists that are actually true to our ism 24/7/365. Christians are never Christian every moment of every day. In fact, most Christians I know aren't very Christian pretty much all the time. The best ones turn Christian for about an hour on Sunday. But then they go home and watch a football game or something. The worst ones can't even manage that one hour because their Sunday is spent in some kind of tent revival or mega-church being preached that gays are evil and that god's love is dependent on how much money you give to the church. I'm Australian (like Jim used to be) and both my parents are atheist. But I still got baptised. Why? Because when my Mum was trying to get married for the first time, she wasn't allowed to get married in the church she wanted to because she "wasn't Anglican (Christian)". Basically, she and Dad decided they didn't want those kind of 'limitations' placed on me when I got older and wanted to get married in a church some day, but was refused because I wasn't baptised... plus they got a few cute photos of me in a pretty white dress I suppose? 🤷‍♀️ P.S. I also have a Godmother and Godfather 😂😂😂 dunno why that tradition has remained amongst atheists, but oh well!

Why? Why would you get married in a Church if you're not Christian? I'm an atheist and if I ever marry eventually it'll be a ceremony held some place amazing. Your parents seemed to not understand that folk marry in a Church because it means you've sworn your vows on hallowed ground in the eyes of God. Once upon a time in centuries past, in the Christian West, this was the ONLY way to be legally married, with small few exceptions. There was no such thing as separation of church and state, ecclesiastical authorities had warrant from the ruling monarchs, who were always Christians, to make laws on spiritual matters, and there were even ecclesiastical courts. Apostasy, Heresy, Witchcraft, Diabolism, Blasphemy, these were all, for example, crimes, actually prohibited under law, and could be tried in ecclesiastical courts. There were many others. If found guilty, for some of them, they could even KILL YOU. In this environment, it came to be absolutely accepted that the Church, and only the church, had the sole right to marry. Your marriage need be conducted on hallowed ground, by a representative of God. This way, it was believed, you essentially bet your soul, and staked your place in heaven instead of hell, on your vows. Divorce was almost always illegal in most cases, and, on the rare occasions it WAS permissible, it was the CHURCH that SOLE legal authority over that too. Every aspect of marriage was defined by CHURCH made laws. You had no say, there was no democracy, and secular authorities were taught that their rule was by divine right, by GODS will, above all else, so they exercised no power in the matter either. YOU SIMPLY HAD TO GET MARRIED LIKE THAT OR YOU WERE NOT MARRIED. Why the fuck would anyone chose that if their beliefs don't compel them to do it? Life would be so much easier if everyone just stopped expecting everyone to respect their beliefs. Beliefs aren't worthy of respect at all. People are...and only when they do respectable things. Life really is that simple. Why do we choose to make it hard?
