By "by the book" do you mean using construction? Most comic book artists don't work any other way when actually penciling pages. You get your panel established with simplified forms. You will waste alot of time starting with detail and rendering, then realizing something about the composition doesn't work and you need to erase all that effort and start over.

@@jamesdeadlocked6664 It honestly depends, For me personally, I prefer either really old mechanical pencils (Because theyre shape is quite similar to regular Pencils) or regular Pencils, because i can use pressure better by moving my hand up and down the pencil. Modern Mechanicals are just to much like pens to me, which i dont really enjoy to hold
