I'm surprised Jim prefers (seems to) the Rockerverb MKIII over the Dual Dark series for Slipknot. The Dual Darks are much darker and heavier, although they're the same gain stage, albeit the Darks have a four gain stage on the clean channel too... Just thought for Slipknot the Darks would be the choice. Rockerverbs are absolutely fantastic though.

Also guitars are so funny. People spend hours talking shit about how the different woods in the guitar and the the maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard giving you a warmer tone darker kind of tone compared to the maple neck without the dark colored rosewood fingerboard and they think it has less warmth etc. It's hilarious. I worked in a guitar shop as assistant manager for 3 years. We had a metal section and some amazing practice rooms with a couple of sick rigs in there. it was in central london in Denmark street so it was a really nice setup. I wanted to see if the makeup of the guitar had anything to do with the sound when plugged in. One morning a couple of hours before we opened up while i was alone doing a stock take, i brought in 7 guitars with an EMG 81 and and EMG 60 in the neck socket. 7 of them. All different guitars. I had a second hand moded jackson with EMG's in it, an original James Hetfield Black ESP Explorer with 81 and 60, Kirk Hammet's KH2 with the same pickups again, we had another second hand moded Les Cream finish les paul with 81 and 60 (man that guitar was beautiful, the off white color, almost white/yellow) with those lack EMG's looked fantastic. And a couple of others. We had a sound check cheap'ish Neve board hooked up to the room. I recorded myself with all 7 guitars playing a few identical riffs that i knew i always played the same (Enter sandmands verse riff, Creeping Deaths verse riff, and nothing else matter's entire intro on a clean tone with the 60 in the neck). After i'd done that on all 7. Completely different guitars for the most part in almost every possible way. Hard tales, Floyd's etc. I then overlayed them 2 at a time (i was playing to a click track on each) and found that the sound and levels were almost COMPLETELY identical. Literally identical, there wasn't even the slightest bit of different between any of them apart from the KH2 which was new but there seemed to be an issue with the active circuit so it was way more tinny that the others. So i proved to me that no matter what woods, used here and there, no matter what bridge, what weight etc, it didn't make even the slightest bit of difference in tone providing they had identical pickups. It just goes to show that all that wood and weight etc is a load of bollox, because of course the wood in a guitar isn't going to affect the sound going from string to pickup to amp considering the wood or anything else for that matter can't carry an electromagnetic current. Not even in the slightest. I wanted to also see if the weight of a guitar (if significant enough) would make a difference in tone. I mean if you're going by all the les paul lovers "I like it, that weight in the guitar gives it that big fat sound". BEEEEP, Wrong. No it doesn't. I mean, i've see skeleton guitars which are prototypes of literally almost baseball bat size and shaped guitars sing Les Paul pickups and it sounds identical, and 1/3 the weight. Anyway. I put the Explorer facedown on the carpet. I strummed an open drop D on all 6 strings *Low E Tuned down half a step) and slowly gently lowered the Cream LP down back to back ontop of the explorer effectively doubling the amount of wood the guitar was. and i kept strumming and lifting the guitar off of the bottom one and lowering it back down again. It didn't change the tone even in the slightest, and i checked it again on the level's on the computer and of course, identical levels again. So you could have a guitar that weight 200lbs, and providing it had en EMG 81 in the bridge, it'd sound the exact same any other guitar with that pickup. Same goes for Les Pauls. Stick a les Paul pickup in the bridge slot f the CHEAPEST 90 dollar fender Squier and strum it alone with an actual les paul with the same pickup and they will sound literally identical. The only time the wood, the material used for the but, the bride or any of that kind of stuff impacts the sound of an electric guitar is when you play it with the volume knob zero'd. Sorry guys! But it's true. test it for yourself.

Sergelen J Disagree? I've put a challenge to anyone who i've said this too. Get a 100 dollar Squier strat OR tele, OR Jaguar. Make sure it's set up properly. Then get your custom shop hand made 6 grand guitar. Set it up identically. Do NOTHING but play the same few chords in the same way with the same strings and record them on the shitty guitar, remove the pickup you used and stick it in your custom shop whatever, put the same brand and guage strings on it and play the same licks clean and distorted with nothing changed from the pedals to the amp etc. So literally the only difference is the pickup you used is in a different guitar. Then play both sets of recorded sounds to 10 people. And ask them if there's a difference. I literally did it before. I had a couple of guitars with EMG 81's. Ibanez, ESP KH2, ESP Hetfield Explorer and a shitty Ack Wylde copy with an 81. I played 2 clean licks and 2 distorted licks on the KH2 and recorded them (it was enter sandmans intro clean, nothing else matters intro clean, enter sandmans main distorted riff and the verse riff distorted of course from Creeping death. I didn't play them on any other guitar. So i pretended i played it on all 4 guitars. I didn't. Played the same recording 4 times, with video of me playing the guitars overlayed. and people were like "yeah you can really hear the difference here and here, you can tell the quality of the wood in the Explorer etc" even though there was no fucking difference as i just played the same recording 4 times lol. Try it yourself... people hear what they want to hear.

For me the biggest difference in the kind of wood you use is the playability and the sustain you get from it. really cheap guitars, from my experience at least, don't have the kind of sustain and playability as a guitar with a mahogany body and a maple fretboard for example, but you're right... the majority of the tone comes from the pick ups and the amp you use.

@megahurtz308 жыл бұрын
If you are thinking about ENGL, you are better off with the Dark Terror instead of this Jim Root one. The Jim Root Orange doesn't even have much of a metal voicing, it lacks the lows and some highs as well. At least it sounded lacking to me, compared with the Dark Terror..
@megahurtz308 жыл бұрын

@Mrmanthatguy8 жыл бұрын
Steve Carlsson when I tried out the the MK3 it had more than enough punch and versatility to play metal rhythm (especially when you crank the gain and scoop the mids), if you wanted to play lead, I'd probably still pair it with an OD pedal, but it is a great amp, however the Dual Dark is considered more of metal amp
