I work for Chase Bank. I am watching this video now, and paused it at the point where he spoofed the number so I could comment. When customers tell me "but they called from the number that is on the back of my card". I assume even the cashier would be able to catch it. Most places do a lot of training on recognizing attempts at social engineering. Even when I was working in the pharmacy at CVS and had nothing to do with the MoneyGram stuff, we were still required to do updated training every quarter. Just like Walgreen's got busted for accepting fake Rxs, businesses can be held liable if they fail to block too many of these scam transactions. At one point, I was covering a shift for one of the cashiers and had a guy who was caught up in a romance scam come in. His "girlfriend" in Nigeria needed $800 for some sort of "customs fees." I somehow messed up when I blocked the MoneyGram, and the scammer only got $8.00. The guy came back the next day with the scammer on the phone. It was my day off and I got a phone call from my manager. Scammer wasn't happy, and it was funny as hell.😂

I believe, it is the ego, to some extent. Another extend would be the scare. They are panicking and want to solve "the issue", while at the same time, their minds can not accept the fact that they are being fooled. I've had the same in the family. It all ended well, but it took me THREE SEPARATE TIMES to convince my family member that all they're seeing is a scam, yet they kept coming up with excuses FOR THE SCAMMER why it MIGHT be legitimate. Terrifying.

This is why I am so diligent about phone calls to my elderly patients. I work in a hospital. They are obsessed with answering anyone’s phone call. I ask them who they’re talking to or read out who is calling them if they’re in the bathroom and ask if they know them. They don’t know any better. Spoofing phone numbers is like sorcery to them. The concept of someone calling them for such malicious reasons is so foreign. I try to do my part. Thank you for what you do Jim.

Seriously, it can sometimes be frustrating but i try my hardest to be patient. They have no clue how even landline phones work even when they was in their 20s and 30s and that was the height of communication back then so with technology SO outside of their wheelhouse as cell phones and the internet they are like children having a magic trick done to them by an adult. Sorry if that comes of as patronizing but it's the absolute truth for the majority of our elderly population. Unless they was into technology and science back in their younger days AND are lucky enough to still have good mental faculties then they are truly blind to any of these scams.

Well imagine for a second that someone stands in front of your door with a nice suit on and an FBI badge asking you questions. You'd probably answer (or ask for a lawyer). To this old guy, the scammer was the authority. Why listen to some lowly retail worker while chase bank is telling him otherwise? It's super obvious and easy for us to know who to trust because we have more information than he does. He grew up in a world where you trusted people on the phone, so when the phone says it's chase bank and the number is the same as chase bank, then it's totally understandable that he went back to chase bank instead of listening to a random retail employee. So long story short, you said he can't be helped, I disagree. He just needs to be taught how to recognize scams. 1 week of watching this channel and the old dog would pretty quickly learn a new trick. I know I was able to teach my grandpa about this and he's about the same age.

Banking scams are the most common here. The scammers speak sometimes bad Czech, sometimes they are native speakers. But the scams are much more complex than before, for example this is one of the most recent scams: 1) a robotic voice calls to inform a person of an income tax overpayment 2) when the button is pressed, it does not connect to the agent, but the victim receives a text message with a link to the phishing Web page 3) webpage is filled = the scammer gets into the internetbanking, knows the victim's address, account balance, etc. 4) the scammer calls the victim and manipulates the victim to install an app (from another phishing site that looks like the official one) in which the victim "changes" the PIN to the card. However, to "change" the card, the old PIN must be entered, which is forwarded to the scammer = the scammer now has complete access to credit card and drains the victim's account. The tech support scams are not as "popular" here, but sometimes they occur, however the scammers speaks English, so older generations does not understand.

@@sem5263 Most of the videos are in Czech (I can recommend the channel Jirka vysvětluje věci), I don't know about English ones, sorry :/ We have mainly banking scams here. Some scammers don't speak Czech well, some are native speakers. Especially banking scams are much more complex than they used to be, here's how works the newest one: 1) a robotic voice calls to inform a person of an income tax overpayment 2) when the button is pressed, it does not connect to the agent, but the victim receives a text message with a link to the phishing Web page 3) the scammer gets into the banking system, knows the victim's address, account balance, etc. 4) the scammer calls the victim and manipulates the victim to install an app (from another phishing site that looks like the official one) in which the victim "changes" the PIN to the card. However, to "change" the card, the old PIN must be entered, which is forwarded to the scammer = the scammer has complete access and drains the victim's account. Sometimes the victims are instructed to put money into bitcoin machines and so on. It depends, every scam group has it differently, but the goal is the same = get as much money as possible from the victim. The tech support scams... Well, sometimes they occur, but the scammers speak English, so a lot of people just hangs up fortunately.

@@sem5263 I tried to reply to your comment for at least three times with much more detail, but whenever I send it and refresh the page, it dissappears and I do not know why. So just briefly: - A lot of the videos are in Czech, I do not know about English ones, sorry :/ - Tech support scams sometimes occur, but the banking ones are much more prevalent, because the scammers speak Czech - sometimes badly, but sometimes they are native speakers. I hope this comment will go through…

I'm still not sure it would have worked in this case. The victim was completely under the control of Faran.

Target is the only store I can think of that does not have any warning signs near the gift cards.
