I believe the phrase, “splashed out on the bottle” means, spent a lot of money. I think the prospective groom’s sister bought a bottle of Dom Perignon for them to all crack open after the (non-existent) successful end of the train station proposal. The whole family was there to watch the proposal, and the woman said, “no.” Leaving the crowd in silence, and the pricey bottle unopened.

I recently started interpreting the song evermore as a story about her music, fans, and career. On the Eras tour, Taylor speaks about her fear during the pandemic that she was writing music for folklore but she never knew if she’d ever be able to perform it or be in a room with the fans and hear them enjoy it. After hearing that, evermore to me sounds like she’s stuck at home, isolated, thinking about all the things in her life and in her past, but when she was “shipwrecked” she thought of her fans/her career/her music (“I dreamed of you, and it was real enough to get me through”). Then once she escapes the shipwreck, she was “catching my breath, floors of a cabin creaking under my step” aka the folklore cabin, and she saw that it wasn’t forever and she’d be able to go back to doing what she loved. The willow music video touches on the same thing where she’s lost in the dark sea clinging onto her piano - her music literally saved her.

I feel like this about the fans being the cracks of light too. I think losing her masters then the pandemic shutting down Lover fest, losing her connection to the fans and her music catalogue would have been devastating Her going over all the steps to find the one that we where she felt she went wrong makes me feel so so sad. The clique of Kim, Kanye and Scooter really tried so hard to bring her down “motion picture put me in a bad light” and her trying to rewind time to pinpoint her error hurts my heart. I love this song so very much

Yes, evermore deserves to be celebrated as its own, free standing album… because, it’s not like it’s any less memorable than any of her other albums. I always thought that, while I understand that both folklore and evermore were cut from the same cloth, (while the rest of the world was hanging in what felt like purgatory to many of us, AKA the year 2020) and in many ways, they do somewhat “complete” each other…it always felt like such a disservice to evermore to have labeled it “folklores sister”. I just think it’s such a strong collection of stories and the soundscapes are so satisfying, and it’s definitely my favorite of the two. It’s great to see someone appreciate it. Also hilarious that Hannah was like, “uhhh…pass” on Coney Island. I laughed out loud, idk why…actually, maybe I was laughing at “happy buthday” in the bridge…I’ll never get over that, and it’s the most compelling reason why that song isn’t more popular among the Swifties, in my opinion. 😂 🎂 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤎

love how eloquently you break down the songs, both lyrically and production-wise! i think one thing you missed about gold rush is its about this infatuation that is so overwhelming that it feels like a siren call luring you to your destruction, which is what the opening and closing harmonies are mimicking. and the narrator's longing for this person leads them to daydream a beautiful life with them, but then "it fades into the grey of my day old tea" because thats all these scenarios are, daydreams that will never come to fruition. the title is also a reference to the california gold rush where many people flocked to the state in hopes of great wealth, but often came away worse off. so i think the narrator is self aware enough to recognize their infatuation with this person won't actually result in this magical romance they're dreaming of because the object of their desire is like a siren or the historical gold rush, but they can't help but fantasize about it anyways.

I loved "Exile" the moment I heard it. I've been a Bon Iver fan longer than I've been a Taylor fan, so to have a collaboration between the two was beyond awesome to me. Then, in the same year she stunned us with Folklore, she released Evermore and to find out there was yet another collab between her and Justin was like Christmas to me. Upon first listen, I found "Evermore" (the song) jarring. It took me a few listens to warn up to it, and then it became my absolute favorite off of the album. That sense of despair in the beginning, the beautiful back-and-forth filled, and then the return of hope. It's such a wonderful and underrated song with so much depth.

Tolerate it will be one of my favorite songs ever. The feeling of isolation while being deeply in love is brutal. When you are years in the relationship and the thought rises "where has all of this love and admiration from his side gone?" it feels like catching water with bare hands seeing all run through your fingers leaving you desperate(ly thirsty) until you have no other option than leaving or become dull and dying inside. Nobody should EVER feel like this. I even ran to the door with a big smile to welcome him - even when my chronical pain was bad. Glad you and your wife are in a better place now. In Dorothea,, “a queen selling dreams, selling makeup and magazines”… she’s not literally working in a CVS selling that stuff. Dorothea is a “screen queen”, an actress, a TV or movie star who by virtue of being on the cover of magazines or tabloids “sells them” or who by being a spokesmodel for a makeup brand “sells” that product. A tiny screen is the only place he sees her now… he only sees her on his TV, either in a show or in interviews. Her friends in LA are fake friends who would sell her out for a tell-all book in an instant in pursuit of their own fame and riches. The song is about fame and celebrity and how when you become famous, you find yourself surrounded by people who only know that part of you… and how you have so many relationships that are purely transactional, built on what people can get out of you and not because they truly know and care about you. But this person from the small town she grew up in who knew her before she was the famous actress, they know the real Dorothea behind the facade and they will be there for her if/when all of the rest of that falls away or she just gets tired of it.

Yes. I think when Taylor says something like retreating into the forest, it can absolutely also encapsulate oceanic or nautical themes. It's the idea of the forest as a mythical space. It's the unknown and liminal space that the ocean definitely also represents. It makes me think so much of her music video for Cardigan where she and her piano are just out on the open seas exposed and tossed about. I don't see the forest or the ocean as opposite imagery in the world Taylor is building across these albums 😊

Your friendly cowboy definitely knew what they were talking about, I'd just add a few minor points for perspective/fun facts. happiness is full of references to The Great Gatsby, and it was the last song Taylor wrote, so it almost wasn't included on the album. cowboy like me's interpretations about whether it's about heartbreak or a love song is up to debate (of course no wrong or right answers there), but Taylor doubled down when she mashed it up with You Are in Love Personally, I was always a fan of evermore (the song) but after her live performance of it, I can't listen to the original. She NAILED bon iver's bridge, I'd even consider that to be her best vocals ever. The two bonus tracks aren't throwaway (in general true, but especially in this case), it's like a crossroads. Their messages are polar opposites. After all the pain you went through (the album, perhaps even more accurately evermore, the song), what is your choice, conform or confront? (Yes, for some reason I might be too passionate about the evermore lmao, it's not even my favorite TS album)

Evermore is easily her best album. Sorry Folklore stand. Just because Taylor doesn't acknowledge Evermore as much as she should doesn't mean that Evermore is not her best work. Also, great reaction man. Loved how thorough and involved you were!

Love this album❤❤❤ Taylor has beautiful voice vocal harmonies and yes her story is beautiful in each so. Think this is in reference to the movie, 'When the Crawldads sing'. I think that's the name of the movie. Yes that's Taylor and her grandmother.

The first 6 songs on evermore are my favs! So so good. The second half hasn’t captured my heart yet* I’m new to being a folklore and evermore fan and start loving new songs all the time. I’m with you, I grin and chuckle when I listen to no body, no crime lol. Later Taylor used that metaphore in florida on TTPD and I love that she’s a true crime girlie like me 😂

I think it would be really cool if you did One Direction’s discography in order. They’re having a bit of a Renaissance right now (sadly because of Liam’s death) and people are rediscovering and falling in love with their music again and it’s been great to see. They only have 5 albums but the evolution in between each album is insane and they get progressively better. I know I and a lot of other people would tune in for it!

Taylor is referencing many different relationships of hers in the bridge of "Coney Island" : "Were you waiting at our old spot In the tree line, by the gold clock? - about Joe Jonas "Did I leave you hanging every single day?" - about Taylor Lautner "Were you standing in the hallway with a big cake? Happy birthday" - about Jake Gyllenhaal Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest gray? A universe away"- about John Mayer "And when I got into the accident The sight that flashed before me was your face" - about Harry Styles "But when I walked up to the podium I think that I forgot to say your name" - about Calvin Harris
